Neal Stephenson's most satisfying novel yet

Book title: Cryptonomicon

Cryptonomicon - book cover picture

Be warned! This book WILL consume your free time, and probably start stealing your sleep. At over 900 pages, it's a hefty read, but I'm glad Neal Stephenson was able to get the entire length published. Not a word is wasted. My grandfather was a cryptologist in WWII, part of the Asiatic fleet, and so this book had particular relevance for me. I have shared this book with him, as well as many hours of discussions and tangents as a result. For the reader who enjoys Cryptonomicon, I also suggest as further reading:

Part of the family of the "Honk" characters.

The Honk and Holler Opening Soon - book cover picture

The characters were wonderful, and what a mix of personalities that all blended as a family. It was just so pleasant to read -- so heartwarming. I didn't want it to end. I read an average of 3 books a week, and of all that I have read this year to date, I enjoyed this the most. I probably liked it at least as well as "Where the Heart Is" but I think I will remember this family of characters longer.

I wonder how I've traded without it!

Day Trade Futures Online (Wiley Online Trading for a Living) - book cover picture

I found this book to be one of the most practical and helpful works on the "nuts and bolts" of systems trading. Mr. Williams' thoughtful and detailed research into market performance was most helpful. It gets the juices flowing along the lines of determining for oneself, the most useful techniques and systems to reduce risk, to evaluate specific market entry points, as well as the all-important exits. I have read many books on trading, and found this to be one of my favorites. It cuts to the chase, giving valuable guidance into the trading methods that have worked for him.

Islam, Modernity and Entrepreneurship Among the Malays (St. Antony's Series) - book cover picture

Not since Eliot set upon the drizzly Dank has an Americanevidenced such bold, imaginative writing. I accidently happened uponProfessor Sloane- White's ethnography while designing what is perhaps the first psychology curriculum to emphasize a cultural and international perspective for the national university of a developing country. Sloane- White's account of a segment of Malay society added to our perspective in considerable measure through its imaginative, lucid conceptualization of a people seeking to define themselves in their emergence from a colonial past. We have appreciated far better after our reading of this remarkable volume how psychological personal identity must be coupled or integrated with a conceived social/ cultural dimension - here represented as nationhood...this revealing work, one as melodic in its prose as an Eric Clapton piece is in its musical lines.END

Wonderful for anyone who has traveled with their family

Coming About : A Family Passage at Sea - book cover picture

I anticipated a literate traveloge (which is certainly there!), but indeed recieved much more. Ms. Hitchcock's insights into the rigurs of family traveling are among the best I've read. I enjoyed this book on so many levels, it is hard to pin them all down. Take it from a stranger...this is a book well worth the read. P.S. I bought two extra copies and sent them to friends with young kids in the hopes of sending them off someday.

Secrets and Lies : Digital Security in a Networked World - book cover picture

Like Barbara Tuchman, Stephen Jay Gould, or the late Carl Sagan, Bruce Schneier has the unique ability to take esoteric material and explain it to a general reader in such a way that it sparkles and gleams and comes alive. This is a truly rare gift. Bruce's own particular area of expertise is cryptography and computer security. SECRETS & LIES is an overview of security within a digital world, written not for the programmer but the general reader. The book is wonderfully written, and bristles with ideas. SECRETS & LIES will make you re-think everything you thought you knew about the security of your computer.

The Orchid Hunter - book cover picture

OMG......I loved this book.
I was sitting there in the doctors office laughing so hard I was getting strange looks. Then I would be crying. The story of separated twin is a must read. One twin, Janelle was raised in London and the other, Joya had
been kidnapped by a woman right after birth and lived on an island off Africa with her father who is an orchid hunter. I loved how the hero, Trevor didn't know if he was coming or going when he was around Joya. If you like time travel books when a hero or heroine is clueless
when coming to the future, you would like this book. Joya has problems with the rules, layers of clothes, balls, etc., after running free in the rain forest half naked. I rated this one an A+.

John Corey is here to stay.

Book title: The Lion's Game
Rating: 5/5

The Lion's Game - book cover picture

John Corey is the best thing that has happen to mistery fiction since the early Spencer, but more witty, funny and human than Spencer. I am looking forward for Mr. DeMille's next Corey's book. Nelson DeMille is a master story teller and a master of dialogue, and the research that he does for his books..! Just to think of it makes me tire! Then again, the final product is a masterpiece. You don't want to miss this one, neither "Plum Island", where he introduced his new hero, John Corey.

A Book to Sip at Intervals

Women, Sex, and Addiction: A Search for Love and Power - book cover picture

Women, Sex, and Addiction is so packed with insight and wisdom that it is to be consumed in small sips so that it may be absorbed completely into ones consciousness. WSAA, along with therapy, has brought me through co-dependency to a life of hope and light. Charlotte Kasl, in her compassion and wisdom, speaks to the mind and heart, and inspires us to be the children of light we are at our core. I believe that everyone should read this book if they desire insight into human behaviour and the complexities of relationships. What I especially value is Kasl's weaving of her own personal responses and experiences into the tapestry of the odyssey of her clients. She demonstrates great humility, integrity, and compassion in her writing__as well as in-depth knowledge as a practicing therapist.

A Subdued Hoftadter, But Not a Bad Hofstadter

Fluid Concepts & Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought - book cover picture

For those who are familiar with Hofstadter's style in Godel Escher Bach, as well as Matamagical Themas, this might be a shock. The normally outrageous style of Hofstadter is quite subdued in this tome, as you are taken on a journey of his research projects. I enjoyed reading about the goals of he and his FARG collaborators. Even more interesting, to me at least, were his thoughts on the state of Artificial Intelligence... err I mean Cognitive Science, and what he believes are some fundamental flaws in the philosophies of many of his contemporaries. If you're up to reading research-type papers on some very interesting projects, this book is very worthwhile.
