Introduction to the Study and Practice of Law in a Nutshell (Nutshell) - book cover picture

I spent a good bit of time with this little book before and during my first year in law school. I read it very carefully, and even wrote out answers to the questions. The effort was well worth it. If you're scared to death, don't know what to expect, and want to do well, this book won't let you down. Hegland begins the process of teaching a law student how to think, and helps one keep the big picture in mind. This book also started my profitable relationship with the nutshell series.

Each and every character compliments the entire story. There is not a wasted word or unnecessary character in this entire book! I'd have to say this story is as close to perfect as possible! The three romances that form during the wagon train are spicy, sweet, and intriguing! Tucker and Lucas just set off firecrackers and sparks with every meeting. Buck and Laura are sweet and endearing... a beautiful tale of a blind woman and a rough trail man. Rafe and Marie were intriguing and mysteriously delicious. Amazing to read about a woman of that strength and knowledge... although Ms. Garlock doesn't seem to write about weak women. But of all things, the way the women managed to bond together and survive the hardships of a wagon trail, was endearing and very enjoyable to read. Ms. Garlock is a genius, and it's hard to believe she wasn't actually there during the era she writes about, as the detail and the path she makes to your own imagination are superb.

Line by Line : How to Edit Your Own Writing - book cover picture

This book is fantastic. It's only about 200 pages, but densely packed with useful information, and every single page deserves careful study. The glossary of commonly confused words at the end is worth 10$ all by itself. This is not a grammar book (though there is an appendix that gives an overview of English grammar). It is a book designed to improve your writing. It helps you make solid decisions about sentence structure, placing punctuation, and choosing the right words. This book can help guide you through some of the thorniest and most subjective aspects of writing English. One of the neatest things about this book is that, in addition to the copious examples, the text itself serves as an example of excellent writing. Perhaps the major drawback is that after reading this book, you will end up being much more critical of the writing you encounter!

An Interesting Introduction

The Nuclear Age - book cover picture

I was introduced to this book by my girlfriend, who picked it up randomly because she liked the cover. Turns out she loved the book, which inspired me to read it as well. This book ended up being a great introduction to O'Brien, in some ways lighter than many of his other works, but it still has of the undertones common to many of his books. Because Vietnam is not as key to this book as many of the other ones, I think it's more accessible to the general populace. So if you are weary about reading war books, you could pick this one up first, and if you like it, maybe move on to some of his other novels.

The Beatles As Musicians: The Quarry Men Through Rubber Soul - book cover picture

I like the way this author compliments his readers' intelligence by writing about musical theory with clear detail. He describes how the Beatles achieved some of the sounds they did and gives good, in-depth analyses of many of their songs. This book is truly a must-have for inveterate Beatles fans; musicians and lay people as well will certainly come away enriched after having read this. I can't recommend this one highly enough.

The Belgariad, Vol. 2: Castle of Wizardry, Enchanters' End Game - book cover picture

I've had these five books (and all the other eddings offerings) for a good number of years now. I reread them at least once a year. Eddings develop's characters better than anyone since Robert A. Heinlein (and we all know he is still the King). I have introduced at least five people, "who hate to read", to this series, and in all cases they devoured these books and all the others I have also. Of all the method's of magic that have been expounded in literature over the years, "The Will and The Word", make the most sense to me. I can easily compare these books to Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", they are that entertaining. I would and do reccommend these books to anyone and everyone.

trip through the rubber boom of the 1800's in South America. From detailed historical survey to his first hand accounts of life around the Amazon, he never ceases to confront the reader with reality. His study is comprehensive in that he brings attention to all different aspects of the European, Indian and African people who live there. The study helps integrate the anthropological view of society to consider the religious, political, economic and moral as part of the collective consciousness of a community. Powerful book.

Out of Time - book cover picture

After reading Both Sides of Time, I was more than ready to read the sequal. But, I was a bit disappointed. The book was good, but not quite as good as the first one. It took a little while to get going, and was hard to follow at times. Still, I am ready and waiting for Prisoner of Time to come out. Ms. Cooney is an excellent writer and I feel that it will be as good, if not better than, the other two!
