Dragon's Egg (Del Rey Impact) - book cover picture

This book was the first Sci-Fi book I ever read. It was loaned to me by a friend of mine in university. He was majoring in Physics and told me that this was the book to read if I wanted to start in the genre. I think I have been hooked ever since. This book substantially involves more physics than I have ever read. It is terribly engrossing and the story is well researched and written. I almost wish I was one of the astronauts to see the rise and fall of the Cheela civilation. A truly must read book.

Wolves on the Border (Battletech, No 25) - book cover picture

Ah, yes, the novel that presented us with the original enigma of the Inner Sphere, Wolf's Dragoons. Read it for the first time in 1987, I think, and it's thankfully reprinted for all you youngsters and latecomers. The tale of strangers who show up in a war-ravaged universe with military technology the likes of which hasn't been seen in 300 years, and don't answer a thing about anything. A wonderful tie-in with the wedding scene in Warrior: Coupe, and plenty of my junior-high femme fantastique, Natasha Kerensky. A must-read for ANYONE who's ever dreamed of sporting the red-trimmed black of the Dragoons, for it's not just a paint job, people, it's a way of life, "until we all shall fall..."

I Stink! - book cover picture

After reading Kate and Jim McMullan's delightful, I STINK, my children and I can't pass a garbage truck without smiling. This totally original book takes us into a whole new world of trash. Readers will relish every word uttered by the tough-talking garbage truck while falling in love with his adorable face. My children begged me to read and re-read the alphabet soup pages--a look at what every garbage truck slurps up in an average day. This is the perfect gift for children of all ages. My family anxiously awaits the next book by this very talented husband and wife (illustrator/author) team.

Facinating Look At The Man So Rich He Saved Wall Street!

Morgan : American Financier - book cover picture

I found this book to be a facinating look at the man who was so rich that he single-handedly was able to stop the stock market from crashing. Morgan has been perhaps unfairly labeled a "robber baron", when in fact he was extremely generous in his philanthropy - particularly to the Episcopal Church and to the American people, to whom he gave his vast art collection...perhaps the largest collection in the world. You won't be able to put it down once you start, and the price is very reasonable!

The Long Walk - book cover picture

The Long Walk is a story that allows a glimpse into the mind of the teenage male. Maybe the society that would allow such an event as the Long Walk can never happen, but the willingness of the boys to take part in this 'game' can easily be imagined. The boys are not forced to enter the game, but instead compete for a chance at what they see as the glory if they win. Only after they ahve started and their friends fall behind around them, do they realize their small chance of actually making it through the Long Walk. My favorite Bachman book!

Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling - book cover picture

I just finished this wonderful book by Ross King. It details the life of Michaelangelo during the 4 years he spent painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. It offers a mix of family history, art history, Vatican history and a detailed overview of each scene in the chapel and what may have led to its creation.King is great at making history come alive. He includes incidents both private and public in an effort to allow the reader to understand not only the artist, but also time in which he lived.King's previous book, Brunelleschi's Dome: How a Renaissance Genius Reinvented Architecture, contained all these traits as well. I read through each of these books in the course of a week or so, picking them up when I had a spare moment or needed to engage in something other than business books or my daily work.

Memoirs of a Geisha - book cover picture

I have lived in Japan for seven years and visited Kyoto and the Gion district and Golden brought to life the Geisha district. You really are able to picture all the characters and Tea Houses that he talks about in the book. It was a book that I didn't want to end and like some of the other reviews, I had trouble believing that what I was reading was fiction. If you live here it is a MUST read. If you are interested in Japan or Geisha then it is well worth the cost. Buy it you will love it.

Tess of the D'Urbervilles - book cover picture

Tess of the D'Urbervilles is one of the best books I have ever set my eyes upon. I have tried to finish the book in one sitting but found out that I can't because there is just so many things to figure out in the story. No doubt, fate plays such an important role in the life of Tess Durbeyfield and it is due to her noble descent that spawns the events leading to her own demise. The ending of the story is somewhat disturbing. Should we feel happy that Angel fufiled Tess's wish or should we feel sad for Tess?

I opened this book and found myself...I could relate to everything listed, from the strong friendship bonds to the muckiness feelings to the exasperation of waiting for him to call, and then feeling horrible for "editing feelings"...I am also 23 and never have I found a book that so realistically contains the everyday thoughts my friends and I go through...the challenges that come along with growing into yourself, and the constant reminders that through everything, the world is full of inspirations. Sabrina's moods swing from low-self-esteem days to feeling brave and youthful. And through everything, she notices the small things that are really important in life, as well as the importance of her faith.Thank you for this book, Sabrina! You are truly a kindred spirit.

Teacher Cognition in Language Teaching : Beliefs, Decision-Making and Classroom Practice (Cambridge Applied Linguistics) - book cover picture

I read this book as part of an MA assignment I did on teacher beliefs. I enjoyed the book so much that I got really interested in the development of teacher beliefs and I decided to do my doctoral dissertation in the area of teacher cognition. The book is really well-writeen and nicely strycured. It reports on a study conducted by Woods examining teacher planning and decision making in relation to teachers' beliefs. One of its main strengths is that the author reflects on the research process and identifies problem areas and limitations. The analysis of the qualitative data is nicely backed up by the relevant literature and I particularly enjoyed the final chapter because it discusses the theoreticla and practical implicatiosn of the findings. A really good book for anyone interested int he area of teacher cognition and development.
