Wyrm (Bantam Spectra Book) - book cover picture

Other then being a wonderful story (the details of which I won't give away), this introduced new fields and literature to my 13 (in 1996) year old self. It started me reading up about psychology, mythology, and other wonderful topics, which I wouldn't have touched without external intervention otherwise. It's that good. On that note, if you like this book, Jaynes's book "The Origin of Consciousness In the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" is great... and it's mentioned by name in Wyrm.Careful of reading the reviews! They always give away a critical piece of the story, sometimes even more. Don't read the back of the book, either. If I were introducing this to someone, I'd say it was a book from the point of view of a Virus researcher, which contains some strange happenings and some fascinating ideas. The book in general has something for almost any modern nerd.. Monty Python, Philosphy, Mythology, Psychology, MUD's, computer games, AI, and general technological theory...

From Potter's Field - book cover picture

Ciao a tutti.

Bastard Out of Carolina - book cover picture

Yowtch! This searing quasi-autobiography dressed up as fiction is worth every painful moment it takes to get through it. The book's title says a lot: it's the story of the childhood of a "white trash bastard" and her battles against physical and sexual abuse. I wonder: was this the first book that inaugurated the era of so many memoirs about childhood abuse that Oprah eventually elevated to mythic levels?
Bastard out of Carolina is a scarey story with memorable characters who will haunt readers nearly as thoroughly as they haunted Bone, the child protagonist: the violent ones, the jealous ones, the just plain weird ones, the inexplicable ones...
This is not a book with a happy ending. One gets the sense that the end of the story hasn't been written - possibly because the author hasn't lived it yet.
Outstanding. Worth 6 stars.

Gone With the Wind/Scarlett/Boxed Set - book cover picture

No matter where I am or what i do, GWTW is the most amazing book I have read since The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Ms Mitchell is an artist painting for us what Tara and Atlanta are like. She sculpts for us the flavors of the characters and has a certain way of stimulating all of your senses at once. You can taste, see, hear, smell, and almost feel the world that has been created. Not many authors successfully pull this off here in this world of TV and Movies where it is all right there for you and you don't actually have to think about it.

Nonfiction that reads like a novel!

Homicide (NBC TV Series) - book cover picture

This book follows a year with the Baltimore Police Deparment Homicide Unit. This is a thoroughly riveting novel which manages to allow you to emphathise with the detectives featured as they investigate cases ranging from the straightforward to the impossible. It describes the procedures and obstacles faced in bringing a felon to trial. I urge all crime fiction readers to read this book if they read any nonfiction, it's a bit heavy going in places but it's worth it (beware - you'll be able to see huge holes in your fictional detectives investigations afterwards!)

A thought provoking text,it makes you question todays values

Book title: Beloved

Beloved - book cover picture

Given "Beloved" to read as a compulsary text for English A-Level, as a seventeen year old, I was at first daunted by the unrecognisable language used and the strange recollections that you first meet. Once over this initial hurdle, "Beloved" quickly became one of my most loved and most hated books. Toni Morrison has created a novel which questions human and social values, evoking sympathy and compassion in all of us. The way the characters are treated by other human beings and by society in general is so horrific, that we can only give them sympathy. The characters become closer to the reader by their narration in "the stream of consciousness", but at the same time distanced by todays society's lack of understanding with their situation. We are not intended to empathise with them as the story is not one to be kept alive. It is not a story to pass on.

The Discoverers - book cover picture

The constant battle for a history teacher is to look for new sources to update what you teach. I read "The Discoverers" as part of my readings during summer school and was pleasnatly surpirsed by the fascinating topics covered.
From water clocks, to T-O maps, to stories of antipodes; "The Discoverers" gives us a glimpse of how humanity lived in a period without the knowledge or things we now take for granted. If there's any lesson that can be gleaned, it is the importance of appreaciating how far we have gone.
Boorstin's book was a boon to my class who found the notion of antipodes, fiery equator, & T-O maps funny.

A jewel in the crown

The Summer Tree - book cover picture

My sister insists that Tigana is a better read that Fionavar Tapestry. Somehow, even though I have read both and loved Tigana, I cant bring myself to judge Tigana over the Fionavar tapestry. The magic in FT is that you can bond to the central characters. You see them react and embrace their experiences thats literally out of their world. There is a bit of everything in FT, arthurian legend, romance, philosophical concepts, all meshed into a very human experience. I also loved the central struggle between light and dark, though I have read reviews that remark that it was modeled on JRR Tolkien's works. I feel that this is a jewel in the crown of Kay's works. His first, His warmest.
