If on a Winter's Night a Traveler - book cover picture

Approximately 61 people have already written a review as it is. I think through them the story is mainly covered, as an interesting side note to attest to this books widely received critical acclaim and appreciation of the skill in which it is mastered it has been a set text for Extension English students in the New HSC here in NSW, Australia for the final year of School. I shan't say much more than that other than its a wonderfully complex book working on many levels and the skill of the author is well deserving of all praise and honour

Excellent book with thorough research!

Unholy Alliance - book cover picture

I just finished "Unholy Alliance". It is an excellent book and is very well researched. Mr. Levenda does a fantastic job of showing that the Nazi Party was much more than just a political party bent on world domination. He exposes the occult roots of the Nazis, and how this evil organization still exists worldwide to this day. It should be required reading in every college history class.

I Used This Book To Improve My Bowling... and IT HELPED!

The Inner Game of Tennis - book cover picture

I was in a rut years ago when my bowling coach told me to stop practicing and just read this book. At the time I was entering three tournaments per month, so just quiting practice seemed silly. But hey, I'd been stinking the place up for 4 months and hadn't made a single cut!So I stopped practicing and read this book in two days. I made the cut in the next several tournaments! I scaled back my practicing and just kept the book with me on the road. While I didn't win any tournaments, I placed second in four of them! This is NOT just a tennis book. I recommend this to anyone who has any skills in any sport and find yourself performing below your capabilities. IT WILL HELP!I gave my copy to my dad for his golf game and am buying a new copy as I find myself getting back into my sport.

Would make any history class come alive

Eyewitness to History - book cover picture

For 20 years I've sought the kind of first-hand accounts Carey has assembled. This book is a treasure of lessons in human nature under trial. I've bought three copies for friends over the last year. An observation: most of the content covers that last 100 years via journalistic accounts.I'd love to see a second volume. It's not like material is lacking; the author could include almost any account of imperial excess from Seutonius, or Boccaccio's description of the plague in Florence (first chapter of the Decameron), or Tacitus' telling in the Germanica of political treaties conducted sober but ratified when drunk ... but if a second volume is produced, I'm sure Carey will come up with individual histories I've never encountered!

The Reader - book cover picture

This book was easy to read and enjoyable, as well as touching. It grabs at your heart, and pulls you along. The past is brought back to us in a whole different light. As much as you don't want to be touched by the story, you just can't help it. The funny thing is, the author won't ever admit whether this really happened to him in his life or not. So, it leaves you believing that it did. He the story with eloquence.

Great (what do you expect?)

Book title: First King of Shannara

First King of Shannara - book cover picture

This, like all of Brook's Shannara series books, is wonderful. I am glad that Brooks took the opportunity to write this prequel. It gives the reader a look into the past and into the characters and ancestors that started the story that continues through the Shannara series. The characters are very well developed and rich, without the droning on and on with descriptions that some authors fault. You learn little bits and pieces at a time about the characters and story that continually make you go "Aha! So that's why....." Moves along at a great pace and keeps you wondering, but with enough hints that you wait for the characters to find out if what you are anticipating is right! There are also plenty of "I didn't see that coming" moments. I recommend the entire SHANNARA SERIES for anybody who is looking for a wonderful fantastical world to read about. However, read this book in the order of publication - don't read it first.

Terrific insights, for women as well as parents

Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls - book cover picture

Reviving Ophelia contained many insights that helped me to understand experiences that I had as an adolescent girl. I bought the book to help me prepare for my daughter's teen years, but I cried for the loss of my own. YES, american society does contain many contradictory and de-valuing messages to girls, including many that are "poison". NO, it wasn't just me overreacting, and even now it was helpful for me to read Ms. Pipher's observations confirming that. ... I was a little disappointed not to find more advice or ideas about how I can help my daughter to resist and be strong, and how I can help my son not to contribute to the problem. I am more fearful now than before about the challenges they must face. I will be recommending this book at every opportunity, in hopes that if enough others understand the problem, we, as a group, as a society, may find our way to solutions

One Last Time: A Psychic Medium Speaks to Those We Have Loved and Lost - book cover picture

My girlfriend made me watch "Crossing Over" on TV and at first I didn't know what I was watching. Normally when you see a psychic you feel disapointed so watching John work his magic made me go buy "One Last Time" to find out who this guy was.
The book is mostly about John's childhood, family and how he became a psychic medium. There are so many thing going on in the book, yet one thing always seems to be linked to another. John's uncanny ability to talk to the dead seems both amazing and normal at the same time.
If there is a fault with te book it is that you want to learn to do it yourself, yet he only spends the last chapter of the book talking about visualization.

The Tunnels of Cu Chi - book cover picture

I narrowly missed being drafted to Vietman. They quit taking people just before my number came up. So I take a real interest in this stuff. I knew about all the regular dangers in Vietman: the machine guns, the guerrilla warfare, the booby-traps, the poison snakes, etc. But this was BEYOND anything I had imagined.I know I would have never volunteered for this kind of warfare. But someone had to do it. They are true heroes. It would be interesting to have some current interviews with some survivors who did this tunnel-rat warfare and see how they feel about it today.--George Stancliffe
