Murder Mystery Thriller + Voyage to the Past

The Alienist - book cover picture

Caleb Carr's "The Alienist" hauntingly captures turn-of-the-century New York City, where Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt enlists the help of a psychologist (or, as they were known then, "alienist") to help end a spree of brutal murders of young male prostitutes. Rather than focus on the demented, twisted mind of the killer behind the mutilations, Carr details the steps taken by the alienist and his team of sleuths to discover just who could be capable of such acts. Although the characters of the investigators were not fully developed, the research that Carr put into the novel, the remarkable way he describes 1890's New York, and the just-can't-stop reading manner in which he outlines the chase step by step merits him five stars for his fiction debut. You'll love every page because they'll all frighten you to the core.

A brilliant, brilliant book

The Hours : A Novel - book cover picture

Michael Cunningham's new book is breathtakingly beautiful, haunting, aching. It's full of life--its beauties and its many horrors, from social events gone wrong to plagues and bone-crushing despair. Gorgeously imagined, observed with the eye of a scientist who loves nature as much as himself, and as restrained as the best poetry or painting, THE HOURS is proof positive that literature has its own kind of necessary intelligence, without which we cannot hope for the survival of our culture. This is the kind of book that has to humble anyone who even aspires to writing.

Where the Body Meets Memory : An Odyssey of Race, Sexuality and Identity - book cover picture

I'm an American of Korean descent (2nd generation), born and raised in the Deep South. I bought this book two years ago, based on Mura's reputation and a sense that this book would speak to my emerging consciousness as an Asian American male. It sat on my shelf for 2 years until last week, and now I can see why. This is a painful read. Other reviewers have branded this book as "self absorbed" and "tedious," which to me are the characteristics of the journey towards wholeness and healing. Read it if you are Asian or love someone who is.

Fantastic Book For Understanding English Grammer

Analyzing English Grammar, Fourth Edition - book cover picture

I purchased this book for an upper level undergraduate English grammar course and I thought it was fantastic. I went into the class uncertain of the difference between and adjective and an adverb. I came out knowing that and a whole lot more.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a broad understanding of the fundamentals of English grammar. The authors build on the material they cover from chapter to chapter. They provide useful summaries and "rules of thumb" that really help the student organize the information into learnable chunks.

Stonewall's Gold - book cover picture

This book is destined to become a classic of Civil War fiction. The characters, particularly Jamie and Katherine, are so vividly brought to life that one wishes they had truly lived. The minor characters are as quirky and memorable as you will find in the best Dickens' novels. The author transports you back to a time that is so dramatic and exciting that you don't want to return to the present. I hope a sequel is on the way.

The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm - book cover picture

I read this book years ago when it first came out. I originally bought because of the strange title and cover, just to see what it was. When I began reading it I initially thought that I wouldn't like. The fact that it takes place in the future (2194 to be exact) was interesting, but the fact that it took place in Zimbabwe, and centers around the family of the Zimbabwe General, more specifically his kids, just seemed like a concept that I wouldn't enjoy reading about. After just a few pages of reading I knew I would love this book. All the different settings and characters were great, and I loved the glossary at the end of the book. Nancy Farmer really created a whole new world for the reader to become immersed in. A world of both fleeting fantasy and harsh reality. Get this book and you won't put it down until you're finished. Even then you'll probably want to read it again.

To Race a Dream - book cover picture

Since I'm not a big horse fan, I wasn't too excited when I checked this book out. When I started reading it, I couldn't stop. It's so well written, everything is described well and you get a real feel for the characters, especially the main character: Theo. It's inspiring, and shows that sometimes the same dream can take a different shape. There's a good romance going on throughout the book, which adds to it's charm. I definitly recommend this book toanyone, especially girls, horselovers, or aspiring writers between the ages of 8 and 15
