Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson - book cover picture

The Scenerio: Two years ago, my kids were visiting from Germany and wanted to buy some English books to take back. As a journalist/author, I have rooms of books, so I was hanging out in the front of the store near the bin of "Bargain Books," and Morrie called out to me from the bin, "read me."So, standing at the side of the bin, I read the book from cover to cover, learning about dying with dignity, the value of listening to wise people, discovering the meaning of life through the eyes of one old man and one young man, seeing love develop out of friendship, and feeling friendship for both the old man and the young man. Most of all, it brought me back to my seven years of visits with my dying father and planted a seed for an upcoming book of my own, "Ain't Nothing Going to Kill the Old Man."

Chemical Reaction Engineering, 3rd Edition - book cover picture

As a student, I found the material difficult and challenging. Later, as a professional, I referred to this book often when faced with tough reactor calculations and difficult kinetic question. Dr. Levenspiel explains everything very well in his examples; the problem sets were nightmarish, but, then, our professor was awful. All in all, the book is highly useful to student and professional alike. I wish that I had had a good instructor, I would have developed a better appreciation the material as a student. Definitely a book for any chemical engineer's library.

Adolescent innocence and understanding.

Ellen Foster - book cover picture

As a college student, I rarely find the time to read good books not included in my class required reading. Ellen Foster looked appealing to me on amazon.com and the reviews looked great so I ordered it and read it, it was awesome. It is amazing that such a little book could leave such a great impression. I immediately gave it to my 14 year old sister to read because I think it tells an amazing story about the innocence and understanding of adolescence, a story not well told in many places today. The author truely captured the unique way in which we all used to view the world before we "grew up".

The Immortal Highlander - book cover picture

I had been looking forward to this book coming out for a long time and it was certainly worth the wait! Adam Black is the most darkly sensual "Highlander" yet - and has met his perfect match in Gabrielle. I also liked the fact that Ms. Moning included characters from her previous books. This book has a truly beautiful ending too. Now the wait begins until the next one comes out....sigh...

Tintin in Tibet or to friendship

Book title: Tintin in Tibet

Tintin in Tibet - book cover picture

I grew up reading the Tintin albums, but the Tibet album has always been my favourite of those. The premise is simple and poignant: Because of Tintin's unshakeable belief that his young Chinese friend Chang didn't die in a plane crash accident, Tintin, his friend Captain Haddock and his dog Snowy set out to Nepal to search for Chang. With 'Tintin in Tibet' Herge provided the reader with a truly beautiful, unforgettable, poignant and humorous classic. His clear, haunting, well researched drawings are a joy to behold. Comic relief is provided by the antics of the irascible Captain and Snowy's sarcasm. Further I was delighted by Herge's nuanced treatment of the Tibetan Yeti. But what stands out first and foremost here is the luminous and great friendship of Tintin and Chang. In the end 'Tintin in Tibet' is a paean to friendship.

Looking for Alaska - book cover picture

Looking For Alaska is like panning for gold and striking it rich! It has been my lifelong dream to live in Alaska, so I read any and everything I can get my hands on that has to do with the Last Frontier. This book made me feel as if I were really there and I couldn't wait to turn the next page! A great read- I highly recommend it to anyone who is curious about living life off the beaten path, or who loves the wilderness that is Alaska. The author shows just how diverse the people and places are in this great land. Thanks Peter, for strengthening my resolve to make it to Alaska someday!

Instant fun for preschoolers

Book title: Child's Play

Child's Play - book cover picture

This book brought back a lot of great memories but also presented some really fresh ideas for quick and easy projects that your preschooler can do with just a little help from you. Some of the ideas, especially in the paper project section, are great "fillers" for when you need to keep your child entertained for a short time (in a restaurant or waiting room, or between activities at home). Other projects suggested in the book have kept my children busy for hours and have also gotten them thinking about new ideas! For my school age child, the Child's Play 6-12 by the same author has been a real favorite. This book is a lifesaver. Highly recommended!

Big Wallop from Little Children

Little Children : A Novel - book cover picture

This wonderful novel should be a serious contender for
the Puliter Prize. To win, a novel must deal "with some aspect of
American life". I can not think of a recent novel that has so gloriously explored, in 350 galloping pages, so many aspects of life in suburbia.
Without giving a way too much, I thought the ending was
brilliant: four people who would seem to have absolutely
nothing in common, have a cigarette together. It was a
beautiful way to come to grips with one of the themes of the book: despite obvious external differences, most of us more in common with each other than we would ever dare to admit.

Tormenting Thoughts and Secret Rituals : The Hidden Epidemic of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder - book cover picture

This is probably the best book on the subject. It tells you everything you wanted to know about OCD and related issues, including some rarely-discussed topics (e.g., the link to one's personality). The author ultimately places OCD in the biological realm and lists the latest evidence, along with the explanation of the brain areas involved. Unfortunately, nothing about OCD is simple or straightforward; but there exist effective treatments and plausible, scientifically tested causes.

The Situation Worsens: A Box of Unfortunate Events, Books 4-6 (The Miserable Mill; The Austere Academy; The Ersatz Elevator) - book cover picture

Kudos to Mr. Snicket (althought we know that's not his name).
Here we have the next three in this marvelous series! The Baudelaire orphans get into worse and worse situations, with the author's grief at having to present us with this information never becoming schtick or overused.
The writing is friendly and open, inviting the reader into a dark, serious world where there is nothing funny about a baby having to use her teeth to climb an elevator shaft.
Of course you will want to read this next set of books! The author continues to develop the story quickly, with little frill but with great charm and vivid descriptions.
All in all, it is very hard to find a weakness in these books.
