In the Company of Cheerful Ladies (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency) - book cover picture

I love this series. There are a fair number of strands running through this short book which all get tied up in the end. There are some new characters and some old ones reappear. And there is as always the sound and feel and way of Africa.

My favorite lines were,"Then there was the bending of the grass, which could spring back, but slowly and in a time that could be read as a person might read the hands of a clock. This knowledge had been passed on to Mr. Polopetsi as a boy and now, so unexpectedly, he was presented with the chance to use it."

Read and enjoy.

A great historical novel

Child of the Phoenix - book cover picture

I can't believe that this is only the second review! I loved this book - apart from the fact that much of it is based on Welsh History (and I am Welsh!) it is just so hard to put down. I have read it about 8 times too and I know that I could read it again and again and again! It gives a great insight into historical stories of both Wales and Scotland and keeps you enthralled constantly. I give it 5 stars and would just like to meet Barbara Erskine and shake her hand! And get some tips too!Well done on a great read.

A Real Glimpse into Society

Book title: Race, Class, and Gender in a Diverse Society: A Text-Reader

Race, Class, and Gender in a Diverse Society: A Text-Reader - book cover picture

This is a well composed collection of articles that gives a very thorough glimpse of our society and the problems that the social constructs of race, class, and gender provide. This reader provides a nice balance of issues and does not focus too much on any one problem. My personal favorite was an article about cosmetic surgery. The authors challenge the assumptions that it is natural for women to have cosmetic surgery, that there is one set view of "beauty," and that a woman's body is always in need of repair.
This reader is all about challenging assumptions. If you would like a more accurate view of the world, I would highly recommend this book. It certainly opened my eyes.

Touching Classic

Book title: Watership Down

Watership Down - book cover picture

When first being introduced to Watership Down I was nothing but skeptical. Talking rabbits seemed like a great thing to read if you had nothing better to do. I was dead wrong. I thought (at first) that I was wasting my time reading about talking rabbits. When I got into probally about the 3rd or 4th chapter I began to really get into the book. The bond between the rabbits is extraordinary. Their bond of friendship is unbreakable. Being a lover of many novels I highly recamend this classic. This story is unforgetable and is by far the best book that I have ever read.

Sir Ross Cannon...Ooooh Baby!

Book title: Lady Sophia's Lover
Rating: 5/5

Lady Sophia's Lover - book cover picture

This guy is the epitome of maleness. He is tall, dark, handsome, and seasoned. He is a mysterious, brooding, workaholic who rarely expresses pleasure with anything. The "Monk of Bow Street." Until Sophia shows up, of course. I love both of these characters. Sir Ross is a total hottie who comes completely unglued in these love scenes. He loses his reserve and control and is a total animal. I love it! And Sophia gets over a past troubling relationship by learning she can trust a man. She makes such a positive influence in his life...it's hard not to love her. This book is a great prequel to the book about Nick Gentry and his ladylove. Nick is also a great character...I highly recommend this book. I love Lisa Kleypas' easy writing style and great characters. Do read this keeper!

Rock's Best Rags to Riches to Rags to Riches Story.

Book title: Walk This Way : The Autobiography of Aerosmith

Walk This Way : The Autobiography of Aerosmith - book cover picture

A great, great read. Alternately insightful, fascinating, depressing, and inspiring. Arguably the all time greatest rock band talks honestly about their sky-high successes and near fatal excesses. After completing this book, the only conclusion you can possibly draw is the good Lord must be a huge Aerosmith fan. There is absolutely no reason S. Tyler, J. Perry, and the LI3 didn't follow in the steps of Hendrix, Bonham, and all the other great talents who let addictions prematurely end their careers. To the benefit of everyone who loves this band (including yours truly), they cleaned themselves up and clawed their way back. This book tells that story with tremendous humour and honest detail. If you are a member of the Blue Army, this is an absolute must read. I recommend Ian Hunter's 'Diary of a Rock Star' if you like the Aerosmith book. However, I also wish you the best of luck trying to find it.

An enjoyable book to read

The House on Mango Street - book cover picture

My daughter had to read some excerpts from the book in her ninth grade english class. I enjoyed it because I like Sandra Cisneros'writing style. I also like the fact that the chapters are short, yet I was provided with an interesting story each time. The stories revolve around the daily life a Latino girl on the less wealthy side of Chicago. I could relate to several of the events that occurred in the stories, and I highly recommend it.

Hand-Me-Down (Red Dress Ink) - book cover picture

What I really admire about Lee Nichol's writing is her ability to take a seemingly aimless characters (in this case, Anne Olsen; in her previous book, Elle) and make me love them. I'm a little worried that I identify a bit too closely with Anne and her VD (*not* what you think) but that just made me love her more, and cheer her on as she worked toward getting it all together.

I think the other reviewer is confusing voice for polish. If you don't like the voice, fine, but there's nothing unfinished about this book. It's stylish, pacey and utterly engaging. And as for conflicts introduced late? That's not the case. Indeed, it's a credit to Nichols' talent that she can subtly slip in little hints that zap you towards the end.

And Ian? Yes, please! Even if he *did* win the trifecta ;-)

Great read, great voice, and I'm eagerly awaiting her next release.

I bought this book because, being the sect nurse, I had done prison ministries when I was Old Order Amish. I figured that I could relate to the stories of the woman. I got more than I bargained for in this book. It grabs your attention right away. You begin to be the one sitting there next to them as their stories unfold. I recommend it to anyone that is interested in woman's issues.

Master of Seduction - book cover picture

I don't read a lot of pirate books, but this one swept me away. Lorelei is funny and charming, Jack is dangerous and heroic. I can't remember the last time I had such a good time in a book and I can't wait to read more books by this author. I think what I liked best was the fact that each character had such a well thought out background. They felt real to me and if I met them on the street, I could see us as friends.
