There's a Nightmare in My Closet (Pied Piper Book) - book cover picture

This book deals with young children's fears in a way few do. Mayer displays an understanding of children that is remarkable, especially here. While I realize it is popular now days to pan any reference to weapons or violence, such references in this particular book are purely metaphorical, and it isn't all that difficult to explain that to children. Attacking your fears is a positive thing, not negative. As a children's librarian who has used this book for hundreds and hundreds of young children who consistently find it delightful, I highly recommend it.

I normally can't find a cookbook that has more than one recipe I like and use but this book is an exception. I've tried a few recipes from this book and they are great! It's simple to make and the directions are easy to follow. My family absolutely loved everything made from this book. Furthermore, most cookbook's recipes usually turn out to be too salty for my taste, but this book is perfect. All the natural flavors from the ingredients were brought out instead of being killed by too much salt and pepper. Overall, I am very satisfied with this book and am looking forward to receiving another cookbook written by Ina Garten.

Dillinger: The Untold Story - book cover picture

Dillinger : The Untold Story by G. Russell Girardin, William J. Helmer is by far one of the best stories written about the John Dillinger Gang. Based on a Girardin's 600 page manuscript written in the 1930's as well as an extraordinary insight by Helmer. The book gives a detailed look at the inside facts and events surrounding John Dillinger's last days and the aftermath that follows. This very resourceful book includes the locations of Dillinger haunts in Chicago. I highly recommend this book.

Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas - book cover picture

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of James Patterson's books and although this was a departure from his 'norm', it was a keeper. I enjoyed the way the book went back and forth between the present and the past when Suzanne was writing the diary, giving two different perspectives. It was touching, moving, made me cry and I was not expecting the ending! What a surprise and a heartbreaker! I have already recommended this book to several of my friends, and they too have read and enjoyed it.

Anne Frank's Tales from the Secret Annex - book cover picture

These stories and essays are well-crafted, yet easy to read. There are lessons to be learned from each piece, and these lessons can be identified easily. But the themes and ideas remain in your head and leave you thinking long after you set the book down - thinking about Anne Frank's life in the Nazi-occupied Europe as well as her ideals. Anyone will discover some aspect of their persona mirrored in Frank's characters, whether it may be through Paula or Kathy or Eve or anyone else. You should approach the book with an open mind and respect for the writing. If you see that Frank was an intelligent young human being, and not a little kid whose writing you can deal with condescendingly, read this book. Otherwise, skip it. This is honest, wise, well-crafted work, and it should be treated as such.

I suspect I was not the only one who entered the word "Peanuts" into the Amazon search engine when I hear that Charles Schulz had died. The magic of "Peanuts", I think, is that Mr. Schulz had his finger closely on the pulse not really of children, but of adults who take their childhood with them as they grow older. None of the "Peanuts" really behaves or thinks like a child, and that's why those of us who are Charlie Browns can identify with Charlie Brown, and those of us who are Lucys can identify with Lucy, and all of us who would love to be Snoopy can identify with Snoopy. The 50th anniversary book is magnificently designed, and it is just as perfect as perfect can be. God rest Mr. Schulz's soul -- what an American classic he was!

With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa - book cover picture

I finally got around to reading this wonderful book. Like many others, I was lead to it by Paul Fussell's "Wartime."

I have gained a new appreciation for the history of the Pacific campaign and will undoubtedly read more.

Sledge's account is a little tedious at times as he makes an effort to nail down historical details of troop deployments, which are important but not particularly interesting to the average reader, but it hardly detracts from the impact of the book.

If an expanded edition of this book were published with better maps and perhaps an expanded introduction by an historian I would surely buy it. Fussell's introduction explains a little bit about how Sledge actually managed to keep notes in combat, which I found interesting and would like to know more about.
