Insomnia - book cover picture

It was a wonderful change from the norm of Stephen King; it's right up there with The Tommyknockers as one of King's best works. It makes you think and leaves you with a feeling of awe at Mr. King's prolific talent. It is not horror; it is not gore; it is a simple, well-told story of recapturing youth and innocence. King has gradually advanced from master of the shocking to now being a masterful storyteller.

Frommer's 99 Walt Disney World & Orlando (Serial) - book cover picture

Of several Orlando/Disney World books I have read, this is probably the best for several reasons.Probably the best feature of this book is that each attraction has a letter grade rating and a recommended age. This was very helpful in planning our trip and eliminating boring attractions and those intended for a different age group. This book had current information on the new Universal Studios Escape Park, but did not have much info on Asia in the Animal Kingdom (other books did.)Overall, this was the most useful book in planing our Orlando vacation.

Book title: The Descent

The Descent - book cover picture

Starting with a bunch of short exciting chapters that introduce the main characters and the fantastic story idea, The Descent hooked me immediately. There's a lot going in this multileveled book but at its heart it is a great adventure tale. However, I also feel that the author tried to do too much with the story. Some chapters seem pointless and confusing and could be omitted. The main story line (of the Helios expedition) makes the book absolutely worthwhile but I think some of the ideas should have been used in separate (but related) books. I'd love to read a "Descent" series. The bottom line is I love the book and I'm still thinking about it days after finishing.

The Dive From Clausen's Pier : A Novel (Vintage Contemporaries (Paperback)) - book cover picture

As we watch Carrie, the heroine of "Dive" struggle with questions of love, loyalty, humanness, and the freedom of her own heart and soul, we can't help but ask some of the same questions about our own lives. On the surface, this is a story about what one person owes another in light of the history of their relationship, on a larger scale it is about finding out who you are, learning to become who you truly are, and standing up for that new-found person. My book club loved this book and had a hard time ending our discussions at our regular time.

He Understands Poverty

The Working Poor : Invisible in America (Vintage) - book cover picture

I heard him speak on C-SPAN. Dr. Shipler really understands the challenges and barriers that poor people face...the complications, anxieties, impossibilities, humiliations, that all work together and magnify each other to keep a person that is in poverty in poverty for good.

If anyone out there has gone from making six figures to making nothing to being homeless, you know what I am talking about. You cannot get a job without clothes. You cannot get clothes without a job. You have no access to transpo, health care, the myriad other things that you need to get an infrastructure together.

Poverty is a trap that is very difficult to escape once you get into it. Dr. Shipler enunciates it better than anyone.

The best resource I've yet to find for this period!

Book title: Victorian and Edwardian Fashions from "La Mode Illustree"

Victorian and Edwardian Fashions from "La Mode Illustree" - book cover picture

This book is one of the most comprehensive, well-done and complete guide to both Victorian and Edwardian fashion I've ever seen. Although the illustrations are black and white, they are surprisingly well done (most costume design books don't detail hair styles, patterns, etc, but this one does.) I recommend this book as a very accurate guide to the period for researchers, costumers or fashion enthusiasts. The book, along with fantastic illustrations, includes a summary of the times and fashions and a very helpful glossary. Also it is much more than any other book I've seen--- it included SEVERAL fashions for each year and several different occasional wear layouts. If you are curious about this period, you must buy this book. I only wish they had a similar book for every period!

A must-have two-book set for anyone utilizing herbals!

A Modern Herbal (Volume 1, A-H) - book cover picture

I have several shelves of herbal books in my den, and I have to say that none are as complete and informative as this two-book set by Maud Grieve. As a relatively new student to phytotherapy (herbal therapy), I am finding these books to be the reference that I go back to again and again for the most comprehensive information. These books not only describe the medicinal uses, chemical compositions and harvesting techniques of the herbs, but also the useage history and everyday (aka non-medicinal) recipes and useages. It should be noted, however, that these books are from England, and the focus of harvesting locale is often unrelated to my own North American terrain. As well, they are several years old and may not reflect the most up-to-date studies. Nonetheless, I would HIGHLY recommend this set to anyone who has even a cursory interest in the herbal area, as an integral part of your reference library!

Boomer Basics: Everything That You Need to Know About the Issues Facing You, Your Children, and Your Parents - book cover picture

I am a reader on the tail end of the boomer generation, yet I found the information provided in the book very helpful in assisting me when trying to place my grandmother in a nursing home. It guided me through the process as well as helping me to understand what she might be experiencing both mentally and physically. I completed the Crisis Information Checklist provided in the book in order to get my affairs in order. I also checked out the author's website and found it to be most useful! I applaud the authors for creating such a valuable reference guide both in text and online!
