A Beautiful Mind: A Biography of John Forbes Nash, Jr., Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, 1994 - book cover picture

This book is good. It is about a smart man named Nash who did math. I don't like math. He went to Princeton, then he went crazy. Now he's not so crazy so they gave him a prize. I once won a prize too but no one wrote a book about me.
My mom took me to see the movie, we had popcorn. I like butter on my popcorn, but my mom doesn't, so we didn't get any butter on the popcorn. You should read this book.

A truly visionary book

Built to Last : Successful Habits of Visionary Companies (HarperBusiness Essentials) - book cover picture

I am the owner of a medium size consultancy - still in its early years. I consult to many large corporations often on issues of long term structure and community significance. I found Built to Last an exceptional book to assist with both my consulting work, and also with the development of my own company. The depth of research and research techniques themselves are commendable. Credibility is the result. The idea that companies contributing in great measure to civilisation underlies much of this book. Why they contribute so much, and how they do it are fascinating in themselves. But it is the very concept of "built to last" that I found of greatest interest. The idea that we can build great companies, as well as great nations, and great organisations, and great families is quite inspiring. I thank the authors for their contribution to our understanding of business and increasing the sum total of wisdom in the world.

Slow read, but worth it

Book title: Devil Take The Hindmost : A History Of Financial Speculation

Devil Take The Hindmost : A History Of Financial Speculation - book cover picture

Excellent book about financial speculation. A bit sobering, given the fact that the recent internet bubble burst was not the first of it's kind and probably won't be the last. This book offers as much history of business and commerce as it does speculation. The second half of the book, which focuses mostly on American speculation (railroads, the great depression, etc) is much more entertaining than the first half which explains European speculation and is a little harder to relate to.For anyone serious about being an active participant in any market (stocks, real estate, anything!) this should be a pre-requisite. My favorite quote: "The four most expensive words in the English language are 'This Time It's Different'"

The Spirit of 'Seventy-Six: The Story of the American Revolution As Told by Participants - book cover picture

Compendiums of primary source material are of infinite value to those who wish to seriously study any period of history. The authors of this immense work have done us all a great service in presenting a colorful, accurate, and representative picture of the American Revolution by those who were there. As a primary source, this book is invaluable. It isn't a book I would pick to read for pleasure on a cold, rainy night in front of the fireplace. In my opinion, it is more of a reference work that will give immense aid to researchers, historians, reenactors and hobbyists/enthusiasts of the period. Conversely, this serious work is not a dull encyclopedia, but a collection of recollections from those who fought to establish the country we call the United States. This book is both highly recommended and is a must to be on the bookshelf of any serious student of the period.

The Summons - book cover picture

A reversal of fortune tale in triplicate: Ray Atlee is a professor of law at the University of Virginia, brother to a sometimes-reformed addict and the son of a highly respected but terminally ill Mississippi Judge. Summoned to his ancestral home, Ray enters his father's library expecting the old man to reveal his final wishes. Instead, he finds his father dead on a sofa that is barely concealing over three million dollars in neatly stashed cash. To preserve his father's reputation Ray searches for the origin of the suspect booty and tries to protect his brother from himself. Tempted, threatened, followed and framed, Ray takes to the air, the roads and the waters of the old south. This reader was happy to ride along. A great read.

Finally, someone gives anime the attention it deserves

Anime from Akira to Princess Mononoke : Experiencing Contemporary Japanese Animation - book cover picture

Here it is, one of the most serious, well thought out books on anime written by a single author (rare if you have tried to look for scholarly books in this area). Instead of writing to a bunch of fans in order to expound on the glories of anime, Napier writes critically and intelligently, and while I do not always agree with her reading of certain texts, she does explain her position well, articulating that position in well structured theory. I am thrilled to see that other people are doing this very important work, as anime has become a serious cultural phenomenon to consider--taking the West by storm. It is time, I think, to actually critically engage these texts and think through what we are watching and the effects that it this media has on our culture.

The Wolf Does Much More Than Cry

Book title: Crying Wolf

Crying Wolf - book cover picture

Peter Abrahams has outdone himself with his latest novel Crying Wolf. Always a writer of hard to put down crime novels, with this story he has also created a hard to put down character and a book that trancends its genre. Anyone familiar with Abrahams' style will recognize the complex layering of different characters, the intricacies of situation and the inexorable build in suspense. However Nat's journey from small town boy into sophistication, philosophy, intrigue and ultimately bloodshed is a thoroughly engrossing tale of American dreams and their darker underbellies. Crying Wolf is an intelligent and darkly funny book which quickly becomes a coming of age tale as well, one told with a rare combination of wit and suspense.

Bridge to Terabithia - book cover picture

This book was read to me by my fourth grade teacher, and has stuck out in my mind ever since. Of all the books I've read for class assignments and for pleasure, this book is one I'd recommend to people of all ages. It tells the story of an everlasting friendship, even to the point of death. Although the two friends have completely different tastes and personalities, they learn to stick together through thick and thin. You must read this book!!!!

The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

Catcher is the perfect book to read when you are in your angsty teen years. Not only did this book inspire me to purchase a hunting hat, i also intend to name a child, or perhaps a dog, after our disaffected antihero Holden Caulfield. the boy every high school student should feel at least some empathy toward. Holden Caulfield let us know that sometimes it's fine to be a little offbeat. touching, funny and just a little whimsical, my life would be all the poorer without knowing that the world is full of Holden Caulfields. A masterwork of touching human understatement.

Banks at his best...

The crow road - book cover picture

This is an excellent book - my favourite Banks novel (I've read all his non-SF novels). Prentice is a great character, and someone you can't but help feel sympathy for. Great writing, great story, and some spot on cultural references from the early 90s (I was the same age as Prentice at the time the book is set). If you liked this one, then you should also check out 'Whit',also by Banks, which is absolutely hilarious...
