Mathew Sharpe Takes the Novel Back for the Gringos

Nothing Is Terrible : A Novel - book cover picture

For the last few decades, U.S. novelists have unsuccessfully played catch-up with the Latin American Boom writers of the 1960s--Fuentes, Garc?a M?rquez, Borges, Cort?zar--often applying their magic realism in embarrassingly mannered, academic ways. Sharpe, though has found the key. The fantastic visions of Mary (Paul) make perfect sense after a few tabs of acid. Wise, witty, daring, Matthew Sharpe takes the novel back for the gringos.

Great Tools & Concepts

Marketing Management: Strategies and Programs (Mcgraw Hill Series in Marketing) - book cover picture

One of the best marketing books i've read! The authors do bridge the knowing-doing gap. Most books focuse on the strategic plan of marketing or on a specific area or buzzword, forgetting the everyday work. This team managed, with excelence to convey a lot of practical knowledge with solid theoretical foundations, this makes this book a pearl that is accessible to those not having solid foundations, minimizing the risk associated with the implementation of apparently linear concepts. For those more experienced, the cristal clarity of the presentation and some of the long forgotten perpectives will be extremely interesting. In a sentene: fit for both the neofit and the tried and tested. Excelent work - 9 points on a 0 to 10 scale.

To criticize this book as unreadable is to misunderstand it.

White Noise (Contemporary American Fiction) - book cover picture

Having read this book, a reader should understand that DeLillo's writing is not meant to entertain the way that Dickens' is or popular fiction a la Memoirs of a Geisha is. It is, rather, a rumination, a statement really, on the state of modern cultural existence. For those who see it as an attempt to be witty, spend a few hours watching the television as a critic and not as a viewer, flip through the 60 channels of static, jargon, sales pitches, sporting events, disasters, etc, and then come back to this book. See if the writing doesn't strike you then as having a stark tangibility to it, the same hollow feel, as though mimicry with an ear for critique. This book means more to late capitalist society than nearly any other I can recall. Don't give up on it because it's not Grisham.

Reconstruction and Reform (A History of Us, Book 7) - book cover picture

When I first saw this book, I thought that it would be like the awful textbooks they force you to read in schools across the country (i.e. "and then Washington retired, and Adams became president,etc.,etc."), but it wasn't boring at all. Joy Hakim's fabulous writing and the fun facts and illustrations scattered throughout this book make history seem like an ongoing story, instead of an endless monologue. Good for kids and adults alike!

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress : A Novel - book cover picture

This book has been a pleasure to read...It's the coming of age story of two teenage males in China: two "young intellectuals"(who never attended high school tho:) from the city who are sent to a remote village high in the mountains to be "re-educated" by the peasants there (re-educated in hard work such as carring buckets of dung up the mountain). In their world any intellectual pursuits are banned, inclunding Western books..& when the two youths get their hands on a forbidden book by Balzac their whole world changes...The writing is lovely, the plot is touching and funny at times & interesting (this is the first book on Communist China that I've read). This book is essentially about books and the joy & power of I think anyone who loves books will love this one also...I certainly did!!!:)

Fascism in Spain, 1923-1977 - book cover picture

So THIS is why Franco was able to rule for 39 years! Payne has done a fantastic job of explaining how Primo de Rivera could come to power, fall, then nine years later Franco could become Spain's "Caudillo". Payne's detailed account makes one feel as though they have experienced what it was like in Spain from the beginning of Primo de Rivera's dictatorship to the restoration of democratic institutions in 1977. Overall, a good read.

This book reminded me of my own situation

Curious George Goes to the Hospital (Curious George) - book cover picture

When I was four, I ended up in the hospital for playing with medicine and when I looked at this book asked, "Mom, was this like what happened to me?" and she answered yes. Eventually I compared my situation to Curious George's and found many differences, for instance I didn't go to the doctor, I didn't stay overnight, and I had an EKG, not an x-ray. This book may be great to read to a child before or after they've been in the hospital!

Cats and Their Women - book cover picture

If you love cats, this is an absolute MUST read. It is a heartwarming book. Each two-page spread features a black and white photograph of cat along with the woman they've adopted, and a short text on some aspect of their relationship. In a matter of a few pages it will take you from laughter to tears and back again. There is also a book "Dogs and their women" which is equally excellent. I actually keep and extra copy of these two on hand as quick presents for animal lovers. They are that good.

I loved it! I'm going to tell YOU about the greatest book of all time! Well, like all Harry Potter books, the main character is Harry Potter. He goes to Hogwarts, bla, bla, bla. But this year at Hogwarts, Harry is in the Tri-Wizard Tournament! But this is what's weird, Harry couldn't enter because he's too young, didn't try to enter because he knew that he was too young, but he was chosen to compete against the other players. I'm not going to tell you any more because I want you to read the amazing book. Danielle

Poetic and Practical

Spiral Dance, The - 20th Anniversary : A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Goddess: 20th Anniversary Edition - book cover picture

This book is a wonderful entry into the realm of the Goddess at any level, whether you're just beginning your Goddess growth, or secure in your Goddess strength but just looking to bask in Her beauty. I actually don't consider it to be sexist, because yes it acknowledges differences between men and women, but we are different, if we weren't, what would be the attraction? In her 20th anniversary edition she addresses the issue as well. I enjoy this book thoroughly every time I read it. Any time you're just looking for some peace, its nice to have it around. Also the rituals don't require a run to the store for the right color candle or herb, they are simple in supplies, and rely on the poetic words and feelings instead. It's a must-read for women of the Goddess in my humble opinion.
