Have a Nice Day : A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks - book cover picture

For an inexperienced writer, this book was an excellent read for anyone, wrestling fan or not. You have to respect and give Mick Foley all the credit in the world, he wrote his entire book on notebook paper. This book takes you into Mick Foley's world of sheer desire to wrestle, the sacrifices he took, and all the blood, sweat and tears he has lost. An excellent book by a living hardcore legend, King of the Death Match, I STRONGLY recommend that you buy this book anyway you can.

A Walk in the Woods - book cover picture

I rarely get the chance to listen to books on tape and thank goodness the one I chose for some long hours in the car was A WALK IN THE WOODS. Mr. Bryson's ability to poke humour at himself, at his fellow hikers and America in general is a pleasure to listen to. And although I would never admit to being a number-cruncher, I found myself enjoying his research and analysis of how the American goverment has treated our great and vast forests. A great treat and highly reccomended.

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, Book 1) - book cover picture

A friend of mine recommended me this book, saying it was the best book ever written. I was skeptic, since he's kinda crazy, and gets all worked up whenever he reads something half-decent quality-wise. But I bought this book anyway. And I loved it. The characters are great (although some of them are really obscure and weird) the story is amazingly original. I gotta hand it to Pullman, I would've never come up with such an original story. The setting kinda reminds me of a early 1900's steampunkish world, but it's so different from ours, it would be hard to classify it correctly.Undoubtably one of the best books I've ever read, if not THE best. I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel...

Hornblower and the Atropos (Hornblower Saga) - book cover picture

Hornblower is promoted to Captain, a post rank, and quick advancement for a young officer. As the youngest Captain he gets the duty of organizing a funeral parade for Lord Nelson, during which his grand barge springs a leak and disaster is narrowly avoided. He then takes his small ship Atropos to the Mediterranean where he executes a daring and tricky salvage operation under the guns of a suspicious foreign port captain. Hornblower always manages to stir up some action. One of the best part of the whole Hornblower series is the accuracy and detail with which the life aboard vessels is depicted. You can almost feel the deck pitch. Great adventure in a great series.

A beautiful edition reprinted in paperback

Moby-Dick, Second Edition (Norton Critical Editions) - book cover picture

Moby Dick is my candidate for the Great American Novel, and this is a reprint of my favorite edition. Initially designed by Andrew Hoyem for a limited release by Arion Press, with illustrations by Barry Moser, this was reissued for mass market by University of California Press with illustrations and special page and type design intact. I and several of my friends have found reading this edition especially enjoyable, as all of the small aspects of design work to please the reader without detracting from the text. The hardcover edition is is my favorite version of Moby Dick, and this paper reprint is a close approximation of that experience.

A Masterpiece of Modern Literature

Book title: Lord of the Flies (Penguin Study Notes)

Lord of the Flies (Penguin Study Notes) - book cover picture

Lord of the Flies is, in my mind, one of the greatest novels in the Englsh language. It is an errie combination; it delves into the dark philosophical content of Heart of Darkness in context of a childhood adventure story reminiscent of Peter Pan, and it blends the two perfectly. This confuion of innocence and evil adds a singular flavor to the book, which simultaneously chills and entertains the reader. Lord of the Flies is an absolute must-read for anybody of relatively mature age who is interested in examining the animal side of human nature. The book is thought-provoking, memorable, beautifully written, and entertaining. It carries my unqualified recommendation.

Fantastic Historical Read

North and South (North and South Trilogy Series) - book cover picture

I just finished North and South and can't wait to move on to Love and War. When I first picked up the book, I didnt realize the book was almost entirely taking place in the years that led up to the outbreak of war. I absolutely loved the prologue, the story of Orry and George at West Point, life in the south at Mont Royal, and Charles and Billy becoming so similar to their brothers. This book was great in that not only did you learn about what the times were like but you also get a fantastic fictional story out of it. The characters and storylines are so strong you can almost feel what it was like to live in both the north and the south and you can commiserate with the characters. I liked the way Jakes writes: it flows and is an easy read. This was the first book I read by Jakes and I look forward to finishing the North and South series and also beginning the Kent Family series. I recommend this one highly.

Book title: Cerulean Sins (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter)

Cerulean Sins (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter) - book cover picture

The latest installment in Anita's life is not to be missed! Fans of the series will enjoy the combination of L.K.H.'s signature bad-guy butt-kicking and the newer focus on Anita's emotional relationships with those around her. "The arduer" is still in full effect, so those who didn't like Narcissus In Chains because of the added sex scenes will probably not like this book as much as some of the earlier works in the series. Overall, this is a solid addition to the Anita Blake saga, and it follows Anita's natural progression. BTW, if you are lucky enough to be able to see Laurell K. Hamilton in person, DO NOT PASS IT UP! She's an amazing person to meet.
