The Fiery Cross - book cover picture

Diana Gabaldon is a fantastic writer. I have enjoyed her books and her tapes. I even got my husband to listen to her books on tape. I have been reading excerpts on her home page and have been waiting this book. It is not disappointing. You feel as if these people are your friends and part of your family. I would recomend the whole series it is great. I have not finshed the Firey Cross yet. Nine hundred and some odd pages, but I am glad it is so big. I don't want to finsh with these people for a while. My Thanks to Mrs Gabaldon for such a fine series! I have enjoyed it very much. I like Clair, Jamie, Bree and Roger. They feel like they are my friends.

The First of the Best

Frank Lloyd Wright - book cover picture

There are some of the best of the photos of Wright's work in this book, After seeing this work, Edgar Kaufmann, jr. hired Heinz to take the photos for his Fallingwater coffee table book. Aparently the Reader from California has copied this review on to several of Mr. Heinz's book pages. This review does not seem to be appropriate to this book. This can easily be determined by simply looking at the three wonderful photos of the Hollyhock house. None of them are upside down. None of the 100 photos are mis-identified. These are wonderful photographs and this may be the first of Mr. Heinz's 20 some books, all are delight to have and look through. Mr. Heinz, we want more of your work, keep at it.

Greatest book I've ever read. "Moving" "Beautifully written"

Atlas Shrugged : 35th Anniversary Edition - book cover picture

"Atlas Shrugged" may be the greatest book I've ever read. It is 1200 pages which you must take your time reading in order to treasure every sentence. I've never seen a book in which EVERY SENTENCE is perfectly written and full of POWER.Just set aside 1-2hrs a day and just let it finish itself. Otherwise you may get discouraged with it's length. ie allow twice the time per page of a murder novel. (I generally read those in one sitting)This book seems like it was written in the last 20 years, politically.

For a history of Europe at 1000 it was great

The Last Apocalypse : Europe at the Year 1000 A.D. - book cover picture

As science major I missed all these European history classes and am now trying to catch up. I really liked this book as it gives both a factual, names places and dates history with events that give those facts meaning. And yes the history of Otto as Holy Roman Emperor is a bit dry (that's the end of the book.) But I found fastenating that the Icelandic people all met for a week to decide whether to become "Christan" and under pain of invasion from Norway decided to join. And yes its not clear that the number 1000 really meant anything in particular to the average joe, but it does help one reflect just how far we've come and how far we have yet to go.

An amazing story

Book title: The Long Walk
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
The Long Walk - book cover picture

I am a huge SK fan, and am on my way to catching up with him in terms of reading every book he has had published. Anyway, The Long Walk is definitely the one story I note as my absolute favourite SK story whenever I am asked (and I really like most of them). I cried at the end (as I do with many), but I felt really attached to the main character, it's like he was a real person. I became attached to many of the characters, and everytime one of them "bit the dust" it really hurt. But the whole point of the story as I see it was to try and make us see that as human beings, as unfortunate as it may be, we might all be able to do the same thing if it means our life over someone else's - meaning that we might all just keep going right on by someone that was our friend, "dying", if it was what we needed to do to "win". The story really has to be read to get the true feeling, I can't explain it well enough here.

Racism Depicted at its Worst

Book title: Billy
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Billy - book cover picture

"Billy" is a poignant, literally heartbreaking novel that exposes racism in a fictional small Mississippi town in the 1930's. Albert French did a brilliant job in using an anonymous narrator to relate the tragic story of "Billy". The author also expertly captures the horrendous effects of racism. This one I wasn't ready for. This story will stay with me for a very long time.

Fabulous look into Psychic Phenomena from a Psychiatrist

Book title: Second Sight
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Second Sight - book cover picture

Judith started off as many psychically intuititive people do, with a checkered pathway until she accepted her second sight for the gift it was. Most psychic books go into the fluff bunny territory of the hows and wherefores, where this book is a window into the soul and development of a professional who learned to incorporate her intuition into her practice as an MD and Psychiatrist to boot. A must read for those who have often wondered if they are psychic only to have the natural world around them collapse and expand as it does for those with a gift ... A gifted reader will find that they are not crazy for some of the things they have gone thru in their lives to get to where they are now, this lady did and became a medical professional to boot.

A Fast, Great Read!

Book title: Candle in the Wind
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Candle in the Wind - book cover picture

This book was fantastic, I loved it from the moment I picked it up to the very end. I couldn't wait to see what happened next, and there were a few surprises here and there. The author really makes the reader feel for Terri and ger family, and as I read this, I thought, "What if this happened to me?" Candle in the Wind makes you think-about the fragility of life, about whose side would we take in a tragedy, about our own racial prejudices, what our society really is like when it comes to racism, and where we can find hope and inspiration to come out on top. Terri can be any one of us, at any time, and it's unfortunate that it took a tragedy to happen for her to find out who her friends really were in her life. I loved this book, never a dull moment, it just kept going and going til the end. Read it, you will walk away with so much more than just the text! Thank you, Maureen Wartski, for making me think about the world we live in.
