Lost in the Barrens - book cover picture

This is a tale of adventure, growing up, making bad decisions and living with the consequenses, but most of all friendship.
Jamie and Awasin want an adventure into the Arctic, but don't count on having to do it alone. Together they learn from each other how to survive in very brutal conditions. The story contains great descriptions of survival techniques and of the Arctic wilderness and the creatures that survive there.I first read this book under the title "Two Against the North", back in the 1970's. I found it had been re issued under this current name when I was searching for it for my nephews. If your reader is interested with Gary Paulson(Hatchet, etc) or Jean Craighead George (My Side of the Mountain, etc) They will certainly enjoy this as well.

Outrageously funny and witty

Empire state - book cover picture

This was my first contact with Colin Bateman whose work, I believe, hasn't been published in the US (making it really hard to get any of his books in either North or South America, even as imports). When I was reading this novel, I could actually imagine it as a feature film (or better yet, mini-series, since it's quite long). The characters are very much alive, for better or for worse (that George is too much sometimes!), and though the story is quite contrived (especially in the last 150 pages), it flows and works perfectly. If you like it, try Divorcing Jack as well (but avoid the movie, it's awful).

Open House for Butterflies - book cover picture

This was my most treasured book when I was a child, and I still love it today. I very happily hung off my bedpost and cried out, "All aboard for bed!" when I was reading this book. This book is an excellent book for children of all ages, and for adults who would like to smile. I can't express how happy reading this book makes me, even 30 years after I first read it. Lots of happiness and silliness and wonderful sayings to remember. And, "Lovabye is a very good word to know."

Are You My Mother? - book cover picture

Are You My Mother is one of those books you never forget. Rediscover this book that you loved as a child; it will be even more sweet and meaningful as you read it to your own children.
Follow baby bird as he searches for his mother. The sweet, little bird represents all of the innocence of a child as he naively asks animals, a car, a boat and even a "snort", "are you my mother?"
This classic children's book not only has a beautiful story, but it lends itself well to the kind of animated reading that excites young listeners. Read it to your little bird again and again! And reaps the rewards at the end of the story when your child says, "you are MY mother!".

Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson - book cover picture

If I could give this book 6 stars out of 5, I would. It makes me cry happy tears, and is opening my heart. Morrie Schwartz is the kind of person we all want to meet. In fact, he's the kind of person I'd like to be, if I could at this late date... He's a piece of work with a mind of his own (as we all ought to have) and I just love what happens to Mitch throughout the course of the book. Just think, Mitch, if you'd missed Nightline that one night, we'd all be the poorer for having missed out on this man who Lived (capital L) Life to the hilt.

Pope Joan : A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle) - book cover picture

Well, in reading Pope Joan, I discovered that either truth is stranger than fiction or fiction is stranger than truth. But, regardless if Pope Joan is fiction - it's great and if it's truth, it's great. I read this book with open interest. As a guy raising daughters, I find the struggle of the heroine totally believable. I would highly recommend this book to young and old alike. Along with the story of Joan, the historical wars create interesting reading also. One can always learn new things reading a book such as Pope Joan, I know I did. It is definitely a book that makes a reader go: "Hmmmm!"

Montgomery's best, most mature work

Book title: The Blue Castle (Bantam Starfire Book)

The Blue Castle (Bantam Starfire Book) - book cover picture

Ever since I was eleven, when I first discovered Anne of Green Gables, I have always loved L.M. Montgomery. I've read all of the Anne books, I have all three Emily books, and have read most of her others-- but The Blue Castle is my favorite.Valancy is the most convincing heroine Montgomery ever created. Only 29, she sees the rest of her life stretching out in front of her, and doesn't believe she can change it anymore-- until a doctor tells her she has a short time left to live. Valancy no longer cares about her oppressive family, or her own reputation. She leaves them and starts to live for herself. This is not a children's book. Not to say there is any crudity, just that Valancy is very much a woman, leaving her girlhood behind. Her relationship with Barney Snaith is far more memorable than any conventional romance. This is an astoundingly good book.

The Outsiders - book cover picture

I loved this book. Its harsh reality shows that no one person should be considered an outsider. Everyone who feels that they are the only one that feels things in a certain way, should come to realize that there are others who feel that way too. Even when the other person seems to come from a different world. I have read this book so many times that I've memorized the first and last line!!:)

Dazzling survey of drug history, science, art and culture

Artificial Paradises : A Drugs Reader (Penguin Twentieth Century Classics S.) - book cover picture

I expected a handy reference tome and found something else - a breathtaking and compelling end-to-end read. Excerpts are short and threaded together in sections which raise the central questions about the relation of drugs to art, religion, science and society while illustrating them with an incredible range of perspectives from history and different cultures. I find most 'drug literature' rather boring but this anthology opens the subject out into new dimensions.
