Casting Shadows (Babylon 5: The Passing of the Techno-Mages, Book 1) - book cover picture

The Technomages were some of the more provocative beings conjured up by Stracynski's imagination for the Babylon 5 universe. Their story-potential barely tapped by a sole B5 episode, 'The Geometry of Shadows', development of the history, powers and knowledge of the Technomages promised to be a major ingredient of Babylon 5: Crusade which featured a Technomage, Galen, among its main characters. Alas, due to Crusade's early cancelation, their potential was never realized. This novel answers many open questions on Galen and his order. It sheds light on the origins of technomancy, reveals how the Technomages reacted to the return of the Shadows, and the crucial role Galen played in it. Once started, it is hard to put down. One of the best B5 novels so far.

Brilliant Adventure Story

The Mosquito Coast (Penguin Readers, Level 4) - book cover picture

The Mosquito Coast is a gripping book about a father, Allie Fox, who leads his family to the jungles of Honduras to start a utopian community. Dissatifed with America and convinced a war will occur, he buys a village and uses his intelligence to build many things to make the natives' lives easier. A manipulative man, Allie is able to convince his family (who consider him as nothing short of a God) and the villagers to go along with him. However, he is human, and has negative qualities which continue to plague him. He keeps on trying to create a perfect world while the protagonist, his son Charlie, attempts to overlook his father's increasing failures which lead the Fox family towards unimaginable despair. A well-paced book which leads to a brilliant climax and one of the most ironic endings in literature. A must-read. 10/10

Blindside: Why Japan Is Still on Track to Overtake the U.S. by the Year 2000 - book cover picture

It is very difficult to usefully understand anything(the tree`s) unless one has an overall view (the forest) of what is going on.

Fingleton has written a book which cuts through all the PR and armchair magazine analysis that has been done on Japan to produce a work which should be read by anybody who is wondering why they have been laid-off or why their garduate daughter can`t get a job.

In my opinion his analysis goes a long way
towards explaining why Japan will be economically stronger than many countries in the near future.

I especially liked the way in which his opinion`s were balanced and pointed the finger at Western countries, particularly, America, for being slow to adapt to Japan`s
revolutionary economic structures

Classic text on regression with an applied context

Applied Regression Analysis, Includes disk (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics) - book cover picture

Draper and Smith have long had a reputation for an outstanding book on regression analysis written at an elementary to intermediate level. I have long had a copy on my bookshelf and continue to purchase the revisions. They are careful to keep the book current by always incorporating new advances. This edition includes many of the recent advances in regression diagnostics as well as a description of the bootstrap approach to regression problems. Those interested in regression graphics should consult the book by R. Dennis Cook. More on the bootstrap can be found in my book "Bootstrap Methods: A Practitioner's Guide" or the other fine books by Efron and Tibshirani, Davison and Hinkley, and Lunneborg.

Lucie Babbidge's House (Avon Camelot Books (Paperback)) - book cover picture

When I first read this book, I must have been in middle school. I don't think I quite understood it at the time, but I did love it even then. Now, I am a junior in college (and an English major!) and this book doesn't cease to amaze me. The levels Cassedy writes with are just amazing. The plot is so intricately woven that it marvels me. I read it again this past summer, and simply cried at the end when Lucie stood up to Miss Pimm. Very reminiscent of Dead Poet's Society, which happens to be my favorite movie. When my daughter is old enough to understand chapter books, this will be one of the first books I read to her.

The Neutronium Alchemist : Part I - Consolidation (Neutronium Alchemist) - book cover picture

These Hamilton books have it all - hard SF, speculative SF, fantasy, horror, combat, space opera, sex (with and without responsibility). Multiple plots perfectly interwoven. Characters that are strong and believable yet not "over the top" (too far). I have not once said, "Why would this person do that?" I have not once said, "OK, get on with it." And they're BIG books, but real page-turners from cover to cover. These books are about realistic people, made larger than life by their circumstances, pitted face to face with pure evil (and the possibility of pure good) incarnate. Mythical, spiritual, raw-edged escapism at its best. Take it from a guy who quit counting after the 20th time he saw Star Wars, the original, in a theater. Hamilton rocks.

A comprehensive book on Fourier Analysis, PDE and BVP

Book title: Fourier Analysis and Boundary Value Problems
Rating: 5/5

Fourier Analysis and Boundary Value Problems - book cover picture

This is one of the best book from which to learn the subject, as it covers all the topics with great clarity and includes historical developement which makes for great reading. The coverage is mathematical rigorous but yet well-written enough that an advance undergrad. would have no problem in learning the material for the 1st time from this book. The only drawback to this book is that there is no answer for any exercise (no solution manual available either). Learn the mathematics here and use other books for exercise.

Little know work told from a child's perspective

Book title: The Island on Bird Street
Rating: 5/5

The Island on Bird Street - book cover picture

Highly recommended and little-known book of the war and Holocaust years told from a child's perspective. Left alone in the ghetto, a young boy struggles to survive, showing enormous courage, resilience and willpower. I also recommend the video if and when you can get a copy (some video stores have previewed copies on sale or Amazon's zhops and auctions occasionally have some) as it is an incredibly well-acted and moving story. The book and video do have some differences but would make a nice adition to any collection of Jewish literature and/or movies. I'd recommend the book for a teenage reader or for a Jewish reading group. Best for more mature readers able to handle difficult, complex topics.

Cars and Trucks and Things That Go - book cover picture

Our three boys went through 3 copies of this book. I bought a copy for my granddaughter and have given at least a dozen as gifts. It's a wonderful book to read to several children at once. The double page spread with SO much action is perfect. The ilustrations are detailed enough to appeal to children of different ages. It's fun to find Goldbug and the race is on as you turn the page. The enriching vocabulary and examples of vehicles make this book a great learning tool.

It Will Be Considered A Classic

Book title: Life of Pi
Rating: 5/5

Life of Pi - book cover picture

I'm an avid reader, usually a book per week, and this book is the best I've read in the past year, maybe longer. It is brilliantly imagined, impeccably written, whimsical, funny and thougtful all at once. There's always a danger in building a book up too much for other readers, so I'll just say this: this book reminded me why I read and what fiction is supposed to do for us. I was SMILING as I read it.
I agree with the below reviewer that the "believe in God" promise isn't quite delivered on, but that didn't compromise the book for me. The book made me believe in the power of storytelling, which goes a very long way on a rainy day.

Buy it in hardback. I'd bet good money this will be one day be considered a classic.
