Holder of the World - book cover picture

At the beginning of the story Beigh, an assets hunter, is searching for a long lost diamond that she believes has deeply rooted ties to her family. She goes on a world-wide search for this gem, through which we come to know Hannah, a woman also destined for a world-wide journey. These two women, seemingly tied together only through genes, come to be mirrors of one another. This novel uses elements of history, science fiction, and romance to tell a story of beauty, strength, and bravery that transcend the limits of what "a novel should be". Readers are sure to find the making of a hero in the life of Hannah, beginning with her birth in Puritan America to her feats of strength in battle in India.

This book spoke to me not only as a woman, but also as a young adult, who is on her way into a life unkown, much like Hannah and Beigh. I highly recommend this book to any reader who is looking for a smart and exciting journey into another world.

One of the greatest books covering American History

Book title: The American Nation

The American Nation - book cover picture

My school uses this textbook to teach United States history, and I must say that this is one of the best books ever published covering U.S. history. The book is over 970 pages and offers hundreds of full-color maps, photographs, and illustrations. It is well written and the authors obviously spent a great deal of time and effort to give an accurate and detailed account of our country, from the first Native Americans to Americas rise as a world superpower. Your family will look to this book many times for all kinds of information and it will definately be a valuable resource at home.

The Summer of the Swans - book cover picture

I think the main ideas are when Sara took Charie to see the swans. When Charie went to see the swans by himself and he got lost. When Joe Melby gave Sara Charlie's slipper. When Joe gave Charlie his watch.
My favorite character is Joe Melby.Sara thought Joe took Charlie's watch, but he did not.He gave it back to Charlie. He let Charlie wear his watch untill Charlie's watch could be fixed.
I enjoyed this novel because it shows how people can respect people ,and that people are patient.People are nice to Charlie.

Good choice for discussion groups at elementary schools

The Cay (Career Planning Guide) - book cover picture

Although there are plenty of books about people who survive in the cold wilderness, I chose to include this island adventure in my fifth grade unit on survival. Not only did it get my students talking about survival skills, but it also allowed them to respond to the character's feelings on race in a neutral way. The students who read this book, both black and white, said that their discussions were very enlightening. I'd suggest this to teachers and parents as a good group novel or read-aloud.

Abbey Lives!

Book title: Desert Solitaire
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Desert Solitaire - book cover picture

There's not a whole lot I can add to all of the reviews posted thus far, so I'll keep this brief. Abbey was ahead of his time in foreseeing the problems that would overtake not only the canyonlands area, but the nation and the world. He wasn't afraid to speak honestly, even if it meant exposing the sometimes contradictory nature that was inherent in Abbey (and that is present in all of us). While some of Abbey's other books were perhaps not up to par, Desert Solitaire is truly a great book. Some have said that it has the power to change lives. I can attest to this personally, because it changed mine.

Barker never ceases to amaze

Book title: The Great and Secret Show: The First Book of the Art
Rating: 5/5

The Great and Secret Show: The First Book of the Art - book cover picture

This, simply put, is one of the best books ever written. The characters are well drawn out, the plot never stops twisting, and there is more imagination put into the inventions in this book than in any other two. It is not a hardcore horror novel but there are some interesting, cerebral scares nonetheless. Clive is able to create other worlds and conventions so efforlessly that concepts like The Art, The Shoal, and Quiddity seem commonplace once you are done the book. The characters got to be so familiar that I couldn't wait to read Everville (also mind-bogglingly amazing) so I could revisit old friends and places. If you want to introduce yourself to Barker or are already familiar with his work and haven't read this novel, you WILL buy this book.

The Mythical Man-Month: Essays on Software Engineering, 20th Anniversary Edition - book cover picture

One of the best technical overview books I've read. Brooks
was project lead for IBMs system 360 software and
articulates truths I have known and experienced personally
during the last fifteen years of software development.
I really enjoyed his understanding of the limits and
capabilities of the human mind, especially bandwidth
inside one mind compared to bandwidth between minds.
I found Brooks's combination of knowledge and humilty
appealing, and the whole book was a delight to read.

Very sad book.

The Dangerous Quest (Spooksville, 20) - book cover picture

I thought this was one of the saddest Spooksville book. Someone has put a curse over Watch. Then when Adam, Bryce, Cindy, and Sally go to the coffee and doughnut shop, Watch starts to have an attack. It was so cool when Adam and Cindy went to the other dimension and saw themseles. It was like looking into a mirror. That's spooky. They meet Princess Rula a character from a book. I thought it was confusing when he talked about Cindy Two and Adam Two and Watch Two.Prince Tomel killed Adam so he could save Princess Rula. Then Watch dies but something happens at the end...

Hawksong : The Kiesha'ra: Volume One (Kiesha'ra) - book cover picture

My only complaint could be that I wish it was longer. This is a story that I want to see continue. Even after finishing the novel, I sat and daydreamed on what could possibly happen next. Atwater-Rhodes switched from her vampires and demons to a race of shape-changing people at war. The avians can change from human form to hawks, crows, sparrows, etc. The serpentine people can change to,well, serpents--they mostly ellude to cobras. These two groups of people have been at war for so long, that not even their scholars know why. Although, the upcoming queen of the avians and the upcoming king of the serpentines have their own ideas of stopping the bloodshed.

This is a can't miss young adult novel by Atwater-Rhodes!
