The Gold Coast - book cover picture

I had often heard about books that people "just couldn't put down", but had yet to come across a real one myself . . . "Gold Coast" was that book. Hysterically funny and deeply insightful, this book kept me entertained from cover to cover. I devoured it in two days, stopping only for the requisite nourishment and nature-call breaks. Utterly fantastic, "Gold Coast" is literally "unputdownable". The best novel I have ever read.

It Will Be Considered A Classic

Book title: Life of Pi
Rating: 5/5

Life of Pi - book cover picture

I'm an avid reader, usually a book per week, and this book is the best I've read in the past year, maybe longer. It is brilliantly imagined, impeccably written, whimsical, funny and thougtful all at once. There's always a danger in building a book up too much for other readers, so I'll just say this: this book reminded me why I read and what fiction is supposed to do for us. I was SMILING as I read it.
I agree with the below reviewer that the "believe in God" promise isn't quite delivered on, but that didn't compromise the book for me. The book made me believe in the power of storytelling, which goes a very long way on a rainy day.

Buy it in hardback. I'd bet good money this will be one day be considered a classic.

The Confessions of a Shopaholic had me addicted to the book!

Confessions of a Shopaholic - book cover picture

This book was great. I couldn't put it down. I am not a big reader. Actually...I probably read 2 books every year on my own terms, but when I read The Confessions of a Shopaholic, I wondered if there were any other books I could read like it. It was so realistic and funny too! If you are sick of stupid childish books and are ready to enter the world of adult literature, this is the book for you. It's got comedy and romance in one. My favorite! This is a great find.

One of Jane Austen's best

Book title: Mansfield Park: Authoritative Text, Contexts, Criticism (Norton Critical Editions)

Mansfield Park: Authoritative Text, Contexts, Criticism (Norton Critical Editions) - book cover picture

Mansfield Park is a complex book with situations that cause one to sit back and think about what has been presented to her/him. I found the first half to be a bit slow and was wondering where the charatcter development and plot line would all lead. However, I was rewarded as I read the second half and saw how the character development and siutations of the first half led to each character's fate. This book is definitely not for everyone, since it is darker, more serious (and subversive) compared to Austen's other works. especially if you are uncomfortable with subversive situations.

Fascinating account of what made Rasputin tick

The Rasputin File - book cover picture

I snatched this book off the shelf as soon as I saw it and I wasn't disappointed. This is the first book on Rasputin that actually makes him a flesh-and-blood human being. The missing piece was his religious beliefs and the Old Believers his teachings originated in. The author had access to the police files on Rasputin and to interviews with some of his followers that add immeasurably to Rasputin's biography. Fascinating.

Stellaluna - Oversize edition - book cover picture

I am presently taking a Library Science class at my college. I am an education major. I must admit, I was not looking forward to reading all the required books, but Jannell Cannon is great. The illustrations in these books are unreal and so life-like! Anyone would have to love a little yellow snake, or a bat that lives with birds. The great thing about these books is that the storylines and illustrations are so real and completely outstanding. I have a four year old who now thinks she may want to play with snakes after reading Verdi. Jannell Cannon, PLEASE continue to write and illustrate! You are great and I beleive I am receiving as much pleasure from these books as my four year old!!!

For an amature physicist, this book is perfect

Hyperspace: A Scientific Odyssey Through Parallel Universes, Time Warps, and the Tenth Dimension - book cover picture

I loved this book and could not put it down from beginning to end. Anyone can enjoy its clear and easy metaphors which make complex ideas such as how we appear from higher dimensions, time travel paradoxes, and superstring theory seem as simple as addition and subtraction. For the "recreational physicist," this book is perfect. As a high school student, it is easy for me to become lost in such complex ideas. But never once in this book was I wondering what I was reading or trying to figure out what was going on. Completing this book left me with a hunger for more knowledge in the field of astro and theoretical physics.

Speaking of interviews, volume two is a winner

Speaking of Murder: Interviews With the Masters of Mystery and Suspense, Vol. 2 - book cover picture

The second volume of interviews with best-selling authors of mystery and suspense is an insightful book that provides fans with information about favorite authors. The twenty-two interviews include a Who's Who with noted writers like Koontz, Evanovich, Jance, and Parker (Robert B.) providing readers with motivations and inspirations to their story lines as well as why they avoid some topics. The Gorman-Greenberg duo provides another insider's look at fan favorites. The interviewers consist of individuals with varying degrees of fame within the field. The dialogues are for the most part interesting though they occasionally drags on too long. Still, another masterful non-fiction from the kings of anthology interviews.Harriet Klausner

A simple good read

Book title: Breath, Eyes, Memory

Breath, Eyes, Memory - book cover picture

Breath, Eyes, Memory, is told through the eyes of Sophie. Sophie is a young girl growing up in Haiti, by her aunt, not knowing why her mom left and went to the US. Suddenly her mom sends for her to come to New York where she is staying, so Sophie leaves everything she know to go stay with a mother she never knew. Sophie find's out the horrible act that sent her mother from her homeland. All the women in Sophie's family have to go through a check by their mom every night to make sure they are still virgins, which Sophie hates. Sophie ends up marrying a much older guy, to her mother's disapointment. I throught this book had strong family values, but it also was very sad with what the women went through. You don't want to miss this one, it is the best in my opinion that Oprah has picked.
