Latino in America

Iguana Dreams : New Latino Fiction - book cover picture

This is an excellent anthology of short stories written by Latino authors from many different countries. Not only are the short stories themselves entertaining, but they give insight into what it is like for each particular Latino culture to assimilate in America. What it is like to be a Cuban is not the same for a Mexican in America, and a Puerto Rican and so on. Even though some of the Latino cultures appear similar, there are major differences that are not obvious to mainstream America. In this book of short stories, you will find consistent topics that can be shared by everyone Latino or not. Anyone who is interested in the differences between Latino cultures in America should read this book because they are not all the same. Besides, the stories are great.

Telling my opinion of this book.

Black Unicorn (Magic Kingdom of Landover Novel) - book cover picture

This book was not quite what I expected. It was on a different line from The Sword of Shannara, but I liked it for itself. I especially liked Questor Thews, the Court Wizard whose spells often go awry, Abernathy the Scribe, who was turned into a dog by one of Questor's twisted spells, and Edgewood Dirk, the prism cat. Dirk was sent by the fairies to bring to truth the spell in which Ben Holiday, High Lord over Landover, has become entangled. In Dirk's own words, "I was sent to make you think." This was an extremly good book, and I wish I had read the first in this series first.

good biography of Luther

Martin Luther: Hero of Faith - book cover picture

This book was an easy-to-read biography of the life of the great reformer Martin Luther. It is not overly detailed, but still presents the basic and key events of his life. One gets a good overall picture of his story. It doesn't mention some of his shortcomings. (Such as the fact he was anti-semitic. In this we can not honor him.) This edition contains photos from the recent "hollywood quality" movie of his life. Consider seeing the movie too, besides reading this book.

A seminal work in nationalities scholarship

Thinking Theoretically About Soviet Nationalities - book cover picture

Quite sadly, this classic edited volume has not received the praise it richly deserves. Alexander Motyl has laced together a galaxy of luminaries in the nationalities field to piece together myriad theoretical approaches to studying nationalities in the former Soviet empire. How wonderful it is to read both Soviet scholars such as John Armstrong and Motyl himself, as well as such noted figures as Ernest Gellner and Anthony D. Smith ruminate on the complexities and contradictions inherent to Soviet nationalities policy. This is a text that unlike most books in the late to post-Soviet period has powerfully stood the test of time. It is a justifiably important work.

Very good introduction to quantum electrodynamics

Book title: Advanced Quantum Mechanics

Advanced Quantum Mechanics - book cover picture

This is a very fine book on quantum electrodynamics and should not be confused with Modern Quantum Mechanics, which is a postumous text on quantum mechanics, too formal to my taste. Advanced Quantum Mechanics, on the other hand, is quite the opposite. The treatment of field quantization is very intuitive, based on Fermi's ideas, and Physics is always kept to the forefront. Calculations (there are plenty of them; this is not a couch book) are very detailed and, alas, must be redone with much attention, for typos are quite frequent. I believe this to be still the book to be recommended for a beginner. She should, after all, know the physics, and be able to do a back-of-envelope estimative of the size of Lamb shift, by Bethe's method. The book teaches you that.

Mathematics: From the Birth of Numbers - book cover picture

This reference should grace the bookshelf of any math afficciando. Gullberg's humerous, analytical writing brought me increased clarity on many obtuse mathematical conjectures. It also magnified my own love for mathmatics. I have read the book twice already and plan do so many more times. I learn something new in every re-read. I am definately taking this book to college, where it will bring much pleasure and assistance over the next four years.

Justice (Peter Decker & Rina Lazarus Novels (Paperback)) - book cover picture

I'm a 16 year old girl from Sotckholm (sweden) And I just finished reading JUSTICE... I loved it, but I got dissapointed on the end. Cause the end kind of ruined the story a bit... Cris had been described as a pretty NICE guy during the whole story and then suddenly he became this evil person... I liked Chris character and that is maybe why I got dissapointed. Justice was the first book by Faye Kellerman that I have read, but it for sure wont be the last! Great job mrs/miss Kellerman! And I wish that there would come a follow up in the near future so we can read about what happened to Terry and Chris. I'm really curious...

Our Man in Havana : An Entertainment (Twentieth Century Classics) - book cover picture

Graham Greene is without a doubt my favorite author and this is my favorite work by a man who should be revered as one of the literary greats of the modern world. I love this book because I find it hysterical, but not shallow. Greene is witty, clever and poignent, a combination which seems to elude most other authors of his time. I reread Our Man in Havana every few months and, amazingly, it gets better every time.

Undead and Unwed (Berkley Sensation) - book cover picture

This book is one of the funniest I read in a really long time. I use to laugh like this for Janet Evonovich's Stephanie Plum novels, and what a relief to find a subtitute for the lacking series.

Vampire readers, romance readers, and fantasy readers will enjoy this light comedy. It begins with the death of the main character, Betsy. She knows she is dead, but thinks something has happened to her to make her a walking zombie, goodness knows she doesn't remember being bit by a vampire (at least not in the convintional sense). So she immediately tries to finish the job! Jumping off buildings, electrocution, buses, noting works. Imagine the surprise on her family's face when they see her strolling in? Imagine her hated step-mother's face?! Then there are these crazy vampires who use every cliche' from the movies and are really sore at her for laughing at them because of it. The one reward? Eric!

Guys, this novel is hilarious! You will not be able to put it down!

Next to SH-5, this is the best Vonnegut

Book title: Galapagos
Rating: 5/5

Galapagos - book cover picture

Next to Slaughterhouse-five this is Vonnegut's best. It perfectly blends immense humor with an element of seriousness that only vonnegut could create. The character of Leon Trout is easily one of the best he has created in any of his other novels. This book seems to be a bridge that ties all of vonnegut's books together; from "Player Piano" to "Hocus Pocus." The message that this book leaves you with will not be one soon forgotten. This is also a great one for someone new to Vonnegut
