The Divine Comedy (Vintage) - book cover picture

In his COMMOEDIA, Dante summarized the medieval thinking, much of the human history and his own general knowledge , beyound throwing his principal criticized people (for their behaviours and decissions) on the supplicies of the Hell. Infantile opinnion will it be to judge the FLORENTINII NASCENTI NOR MORIBUS just for his heavenly poetry. In the COMMOEDIA, as in any literary work, the need is to feel the pleasure as trying to understand what we`re reading, for occult, science and moralism are among the songs of immortality. For us, readers, is the work to delight the glory of Dante`s travel and discern his immense intolerence. May Virgilii, the human reason, lead us. So that we labour our fate, beyound the power of the BELLE STELLE. DIXIT.

A Book To Read and Re-Read

Doctor Zhivago - book cover picture

This book may be confusing, but the author never intended this to be a straightforward novel about life...he was indeed trying to capure life in all it's spontaneity with imperfect characters amid the turmoil of the Russian Revolution...Pasternak is not attempting to paint a full canvas here but providing us with sketches that try to capture scenes from life much the way poetry does...there is something almost mystical about the book...certian details about the passing world described around the endearing yet weak characters...I also recommend "My Sister Life" which is a collection of Pasternak's poems...which will show you that perhaps Pasternak is at heart a poet...who wrote this remarkable book

Dune Encyclopedia Tr - book cover picture

This is a fantastic work. It is not a story, although many are contained in it, but an encylopedia documenting the Dune Universe up to the God Emperor. I got my copy years ago and treasure it. This was obviously done by people who loved the Dune series and were not just out to make a buck, as in the latest prequal Buttlerian Jihad. Pick a subject or item from Dune and it is probably outlined here. Any fan of Dune will find this book an indespensible part of their library.

The Dark Rival (Star Wars: Jedi Apprentice, Book 2) - book cover picture

This was one of the first Jedi Apprentice books i read and i loved it! In this book Qui-Gon actually starts to realize that he's kept Obi-Wan in the dark and that he should have explained more about his old apprentice Xanatos. Also there's this part where Qui-Gon is going to rescue Obi-Wan and starts to notice how much Obi-Wan deserves to be a jedi. this book is very emotional and gratifying, i wish Jude Watson would write more!

Bridge to Terabithia - book cover picture

I love this book. It was the first book that made me cry as a child. I read the book upon recommendation from a teacher who knew I loved to read. I started reading with dread, because this particular teacher always seemed to recommend the worst books, but this was wonderful. I love it! I love it! I love it! Good for somewhat older children (4,5,6th grade), though, because it deals with some sensitive issues.

An Excellent History of Churchill's Early Years

The Last Lion : Winston Spencer Churchill: Visions of Glory, 1874-1932 - book cover picture

The beginning of William Manchester's (planned) three volume history of Winston Churchill, this book is an excellent history not only of Churchill, but of Victorian and Edwardian England, colonialism, Victorian social and sexual mores, World War I, and the 1920s. The book is diligently; one might say obsessively researched, and is written on a huge canvas. Many myths about Churchill are addressed and repaired in this work; and the full story of Gallipoli and Churchill's war as a battalion commander in the trenches is also addressed. Mr. manchester also does not shy away from the difficult task of addressing the death of Churchill's father from a progressively encroaching syphilis, or Churchill's mother's role in advancing his career. although Mr. Manchester is clearly an admirer of Churchill, he presents a very balanced view of Churchill's successes and failures. A marvelous book, eclipsed only by the second volume of this series.
