Kylee's Review

Shiloh - book cover picture

I loved the book Shiloh! It is a magnificent book about a boy named Marty who lives in Friendly, West Virginia. One day Marty finds a dog on a trail and decides to call him Shiloh. This dog belongs to a mean man named Judd Travers. Marty does not want to take the dog back because he knows that Judd beats his dogs. If you want to find out what happens next, sit down, relax, and read the book. Even though the grammar was pretty hard to understand, I got into the book really fast. I think this book was really cool, and I think that you'll like it too.

Dance With The Devil: A Dark-Hunter Novel - book cover picture

Not many books make me cry, but this one just about did it. As much as I loved this book, there were a few red flags that should have had Zarek asking questions. However, since the story was so touching, I easliy overlooked the few flaws. Also, Zarek was a little distracted by Astrid. This is one of the best Dark Hunters yet. I am looking forward to Ash's story, but not if his mate turns out to be Artemis.

Helm - book cover picture

Once long ago I picked up a ragged looking copy of Jumper from a library sale and decided that I should give that book a chance. I loved it!!! No other auther seems to tell a story like Gould does. Just recently I read HELM and it was great! Just like Gould's other books I did not know what to expect. The fighting scenes were wonderful and seem to paint themselves across my mind. I cannot wait for his next book!

Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas - book cover picture

For James Patterson to leave his normal suspense mode and dive into something this emotionally haunting...and do it so well...keeps me reading anything and everything his name is associated with. The story so was not what I was expecting and I cried every time I thought of it. Even my elderly father was touched by the story...and that never happens. Outstanding writing by Mr. Patterson...and if there is one book that I would recommend to everyone, it's this one.

Book title: Superstition

Superstition - book cover picture

This is one of the best supernatural novels I have read in a long time. It is like a long episode of The Twilight Zone with a little Jack Finney (who the author repeatedly refers to) thrown in. The book theorizes that most paranormal activity is created from the mind and can be explained by things like telekinesis and mass hypnosis. Based on this a group of researchers believe that they can create a ghost. They go about creating a history of their ghost along with sketches of what he looked like. They are successful, however, something goes awry and what they unleash is pure evil and the reality they knew slowly begins to fade. Great characters too!A real page-turner!

The definition of identifying with a book

Book title: The Robber Bride
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Robber Bride - book cover picture

Don't we all know someone like Zenia? She wrecks homes, toys with people, and worms her way into their lives, just for kicks. And conversely, don't we all have a part of Tony, Charis, or Roz in us? As each woman's story unfolded, I found myself echoing what they said or recognizing part of their life. Tony, Charis, and Roz represent most women: vulnerable but strong, able to be hurt but able to bounce back. They are human. Zenia is part of that sect of women that know what they want and get it, no questions asked, any means necessary. Can't you just envision sitting at the lunch table in the Toxique with the other three? Their story is our story, and that's what makes it so good.

I'm ready to head out to sea

Book title: The Wanderer

The Wanderer - book cover picture

Again, the author's lovely fast pace and style which sweeps the reader along with the first sentence. The travel logs of young Sophie and Cody give us glimpses into their past and the daily challenges of surviving at sea as The Wanderer sails across the sea (of life too?). What a young, courageous pair to love the big ocean and to face its dangers, violent waves and furious winds. I'm afraid of the sea but after reading this book I want to go out too. This is a charming book about the courage of survival, grief and the young heroine's self-discovery. The experience on the sea has made her "all clean and new."

Essential for LVB lovers, and not *just* LVB quartet lovers

Book title: The Beethoven Quartet Companion
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Beethoven Quartet Companion - book cover picture

This book should have been called simply "The Beethoven Companion." While it focues on the string quartets, it deals with many facets of the composer's life, and with life in Vienna at the time. Detailed but never dull, thorough but never technical, the book describes performance practice, takes you into the minds of interpretors, and deals with such fascinating philosophical considerations as Romanticism vs. Classicism, the meaning of the so-called "last period," and audience expectations in Beethoven's time. Essays by Beethoven scholars are thought-provoking. I know a fair amount about Ludwig, but time and again I found myself learning new things, or reconsidering old wisdom. I have many books on the Quartets, and on Beethoven in general. This one ranks among the very top of the heap.

That movie was based on this book. I know this is probably promoting illiteracy and the ills of television, but if you like independents it's a good one. I haven't read the book. I DO READ quie a bit, but was inspired to check out the book because of the movie. The movie meanders a bit, so be prepared. Sorry I havent read the book yet but when I do I'll come back and report on what I thought

Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal (Harper Perennial P.S. Edition) - book cover picture

There are tons of things that we tend to take for granted around us. Few should concern us as much as the details that surround the food we may be eating every day.Eric Schlosser did an incredible job of collecting tons of dirt on the fast food industry. This book takes its readers of a shocking and endlessly informative journey through a vast and often surprisingly strange world. Filled with historical references, privileged inside information, and endless statistics, Schlosser manages to satisfy the mind on many different levels.Written in true muckraking fashion: blunt, informative and critical.I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a book that informs and stimulates thought.
