Kristy Power! (Baby-Sitters Club Friends Forever) - book cover picture

In this book (the fifth book in the Friends Forever series), Kristy is paired up with Cary Retlin, her arch-enemy, to write a biography about him. While going to his house to get facts about him from his family, she steps into his room and accidentally peeks into an open spiral on his desk...Meanwhile, parents are crusading to take away a book list that the great new teacher at SMS has issued to his eighth grade students. Kristy, students from SMS, and parents of the students go to a hearing to get Ted (the teacher's) job back. My thoughts: I really liked this book- and that people stood up for what they believed in to "fight the power", so to speak, and used their right to protest. It stayed true to the "Kristy" image, and there was a twist at the end. A fast-paced, altogether good book.

Self indulgent, often annoyingly pretentious, but still good

Book title: Stranger in a Strange Land
Rating: 5/5

Stranger in a Strange Land - book cover picture

This book reminds me a lot of the sixties movement... lots of good intentions, but ultimately a shallow, meaningless philosophy. The book works best when you read it as a great piece of science fiction loaded with innovative ideas and interesting characters. I find it fascinating that many people have found their lives changed by this book, but in my oh-so-humble opinion, this says more about those people than about this book. Brilliant science fiction, but folks -- it's a fantasy, no more real than Lord of the Rings or The Wizard of Oz. Definitely read this book, but if you find it changing your life, it may be time to see the shrink

The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord - book cover picture

This book is very inspiring for married women and also for single women. Reading this book as a young single woman has taught me to embrace my Lord and to wait on my Lover. I truly believe that a woman has to be trained to become a lady. This book is a good resource(after the Holy Bible)to prepare Women for the Princes God will present them to. If you haven't read this book you're missing out on a real blessing!

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (Ballantine Reader's Circle) - book cover picture

"Fried Green..." was a very wonderful book! Fannie Flagg has the knack for creating characters that are not only entertaining, but different! I loved this book from the start, especially Idgie for her determination.Evelyn and Mrs. Threadgoode were wonderful, noshing on junk food for lack of better things to do. All of Fannie Flaggs books are great! I can hardly wait for a new one to come out!

In the book the Earth is dying and Mars is our only hope. They're trying to give mars a breatheable atmosphere, and it's not working. Want to find out why? Read the book!Peter Telep is a great sci-fi writer and proves it once again with Red Planet. The movie had bad actors, plot holes, and sorry jokes; the book on the other hand is full of rich, vivid detail, like only Telep can supply. If you like space or sci-fi this book is for you.

Marvelous Little Book...

Book title: The Screwtape Letters
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Screwtape Letters - book cover picture

One of this Oxford Don's best known works is this profound little book. It comprises letters written by the demon Screwtape to his nephew a lower demon. These letters are written from the Devil's perspective as they try to tempt...pull over to their side...their victim.

This is the kind of book that deserves to be read many times. There are passages that I recommend underlining as it is nice to be able to go back, from time to time, and find these small vignettes.

One Tuesday Morning - book cover picture

Actually, I would give it 10 stars!!!! This is the first Kingsbury book I've read. Couldn't put it down. Smiled, laughed, cried a lot. Very believable characters. Very touching scenes. Her descriptions of the persons involved in this story make you wonder if this is not fiction, but real. I fell in love with the characters. I was convicted in my spirit when the characters rededicated their lives to God.

one of the best of this genre

Otherwise Engaged : a Novel - book cover picture

I would rate this book parallel to the Girls Guide To Hunting and Fishing; although I had more laughs with this one. The humor, albeit often dark, is astute and the characters are endearing for their foibles and POVs. Loved the conversations betweem Eve and her best friend and her therapist, Reuben -- many insights here for fiancees and just plain people. Lots of rave reviews have come this author's way; there is a good reason for that. She has skill and a fresh new voice that I look forward to reading again soon. If you like this, try Melissa Bank.

Some of the best writing cinema has to offer.

Book title: The Spanish Prisoner and The Winslow Boy : Two Screenplays (Vintage Original)

The Spanish Prisoner and The Winslow Boy : Two Screenplays (Vintage Original) - book cover picture

David Mamet both writes and directs his own films but the strength of Mamet's film comes from his writing. "The Spanish Prisoner" and "The Winslow Boy" are both examples of Mamet's best screenwriting. The dialogue alone is legendary. One of the knocks against Mamet's work has been a disregard for the female characters in his work but "The Winslow Boy" has a vital and strong role that was brought to the screen very well by Rebecca Pidegon. These screenplays exemplify what is good with today's cinema and are essential reading for any one interested in viewing the art of the screenplay.
