Sole Survivor - book cover picture

I have read about 6 of Koontz books, and he never ceases to amaze me. My first was "Midnight", which I totally disliked, so don't get disgouraged if he doesn't captivate you on first try. However, I bought Fear Nothing on a whim last year, and haven't put a Koontz book down since. Sole Survivor enters territories that are almost uplifting, and inspiring. Dean Koontz? Inspiring? But yes, this book does it all. Kudos to Dean on his best work I've read yet. :)

An unorthodox, provocative, and wonderful piece of writing

The Bone People : A Novel - book cover picture

Winner of the Booker in 1985, The Bone People is a novel about a reclusive woman living on the coast of New Zealand. Her life-changing experience begins when a young blond child appears with his Maori foster father. Written in a lyrical style that captures the music of the language in sudden bursts of interior thought, poetry, and tastes of Maori language, this book, if you let it, will carry you away. Before the appearance of this magical but disturbing child (who is mute), the woman, an unhappy and frustrated artist, has been sitting in a tower drinking away her misery. The child has a way of turning everything in his path upside down in terms of meaning. In The Bone People, author Hulme poses a number of intense questions. Everyone may not like the answers.

Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace - book cover picture

Star Wars fans will be delighted by Alexander Adams' brilliant reading of the unabridged Phantom Menace. He does a masterful job of capturing each character's essence. We purchased the tapes prior to our annual family vacation which involved many hours of driving with children from six to eighteen years of age. The nine and a half hour reading was perfect and I didn't once hear, "When we gonna get there?"

The fastest I've ever read a SW book!

Star Wars: The Paradise Snare : Han Solo Trilogy 1 (AU Star Wars) - book cover picture

We finally get to learn Han Solo's past... What could be greater? With the end of the school year approaching I finally had time to read a book by choice, and I couldn't have picked much better. We learn why Han likes wookies so much, AND why he doesn't get along with Hutts very well. And can he learn foreign languages fast or what? What about Muuurgh? Who would have thought that Han actually once had a buddy bigger and cooler than Chewie? A must read for any fan of Han Solo! The only SW books I consider better are "The Bacta War" and the Jedi Acadamy trilogy. (no, I haven't read Zahn yet!)

War IS For Children??

Book title: Children at War
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Children at War - book cover picture

Leadership in war by children (i.e. God's Army/Tailand/led by twelve year old twins) overturns basic concepts in warfare "Over time, children gain combat skills and become shockingly efficient fighters--" (p. 87) Children bind to their groups. They disconnect from their old lives. War is exciting. The process is psychological. Children persist for friends. Fear is a major bond in war Ritual accompanies it. The book is in thorough and scholarly detail. What can be done? Governments could make more effort. They could disarm, demobilize and reintegrate. They could rehabilitate. However, child soldiers are on the rise. Guns are cheap. Lives are cheap for them. The future, unfortunately, means more child warriors not less. Eric J. Lindblom PhD Harvard

Flash 4! Creative Web Animation (3rd Edition) - book cover picture

I found FLASH 4 CREATIVE WEB ANIMATION to be a great way to teach myself more advanced methods of using Flash. After finding many beginner books and a few advanced books, I was thrilled to find an intermediate book that is so well done. This book will not only explain how to do something, but when to use it, when not to use it, and why. It also gives plenty of examples to look at and walk thru to give the reader an opportunity to learn by example. KUDOS to Franklin and Patton. This is the book to get if you want to learn MORE and FASTER!

Gates of Fire - book cover picture

Most of us learn about Classical Greece with a decided Athenian slant. The Athenians are brilliant, creative, and democratic, while the Spartans are dull, backward, and belligerent. Pressfield shows us the other side of Sparta, a society that prizes bravery, honor, and self-sacrifice, a city where the men know that their lives are not their own, but belong to their community, their families, and their descendants. I was intensely moved by the sacrifice of the men at Thermopylae; indeed, I was moved to tears, which no book has ever done. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Hellenic culture or who appreciates something beyond today's vapid preoccupation with self.

The Life of Graham Greene : Volume II: 1939-1955 (Vol 2) - book cover picture

Norman Sherry did an excellent job of chronicling some of the most facinating phases of Graham Greene's personal and professional life. While I found vol. 1 to be a bit slow and often uninteresting at times, vol. 2 really gives great insight into the period of Greene's most productive and important years. I'm eagerly awaiting vol. 3 to see how well Sherry tells the life of one of the more important authors of the Twentieth Century.

The Salaryman's Wife (Children of Violence Series) - book cover picture

Massey serves up an intelligent mystery that zigs and zags, keeping the reader on her/his toes. Interwoven in the story is the experience of a Japanese/American heroine who faces the discomfort involved in not quite fitting into the Japanese culture in which the mystery is set. Thus the book serves up a cultural mystery which educated all the while that it is entertaining! The female protagonist is fun, brave, and vulnerable without ever veering into a stereotype. Massey keeps you up nights and sends you rushing to the bookstore where you are greatful that she has continued to publish mysteries with the same wonderful lead. Highly recommended!!1
