Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, Book One: Prodigal Son - book cover picture

I have to admitt that I am not as big a book reader as I used to be. However, when I saw this book in the store I couldn't resist. The idea of making a remake of the classic book was exciting and possibly to like the original. Let me tell you upfront that this book was GREAT!!!! It is the fastest I've ever read a book (4 days); I could not put it down. This book is very direct in the plot, and easy to follow the chapter changes. Koontz writes the characters in a way that you can truely understand exactly what they're feeling, and you can sympathize with even the dubious villians. I hope you take the time to read this book, IT IS WORTH IT!!!!

PS- The next part to this book is set to be released in July 2005 :)

A beautiful and disorienting work

Book title: Einstein's Dreams

Einstein's Dreams - book cover picture

This stange little book exists simultaneously on scientifc, theological, social, mental, emotional and psychological levels. It is very nearly sureal in its playground of time. Alan Lightman has succeeding in creating a unique world, which happens to be set in the landscape of Einstein's mind. The chronology can be jumbeld to create different effects and the idea of time as you read becomes a factor, as each chapter heading is a date. Have you been reading for an hour or for 11 days?
There is just not enough to say about this book. The closest thing I can relate it to is Lao-Tzu's Tao-te-Jing and Gabriel Garcia Marquez' 100 years of solitude. This book is one wild trip.

The most broadly useful graphics book in existence.

Book title: Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice in C (2nd Edition)

Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice in C (2nd Edition) - book cover picture

This book will acquaint you with nearly every graphic technique and algorithm. It's THE book to have if you expect to be involved in more than a narrow range of graphics programming. If your ambition is limited to writing a Quake-like engine, you'll find yourself mouthing silliness like "it covers too many topics, many of which are trivial and unimportant such as the coverage of 2D graphics." This book does not hold your hand; the algorithms are explained thoroughly but you are expected to write your own code. If you're looking for off-the-shelf solutions or a way to cheat on your homework, this isn't your book.
I've owned this book for nearly ten years and have turned to it time and again when taking on new tasks related to graphics - color space conversions, lighting algorithms in 3D, dithering, 2D primitive rendering for print graphics, and many more... it's the best value I've ever gotten in a computer-related book.

As aesthetic and eccletic as the Italians themselves!

Desiring Italy : Women Writers Celebrate the Passions of a Country and Culture - book cover picture

This book is a treasure chest, a real find! Susan Cahill gives us here a fabulously artistic collection of woman's writings, all of which are centered around Italy and Italian experiences. The result is a resplendent patchwork of thoughts, ideas, articles, recipes, facts, stories... great writings, which explore various aspects of that paradise on earth and its inhabitants that we all know as Italy and the Italians. This book makes a great travel companion, whether you are traveling or not, or a great souvenir, in case you read it only once you are back. I highly recommend it not only for its literary side but because it very astutely portrays the multi-faceted, highly aesthetic "dolce vita" from numerous angles...

A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive - book cover picture

This book was highly recommended to me from a friend. I started this book yesterday and finished it today. I was engrossed in this book that it made me think of another child abuse case: Lisa Steinberg. I don't know if anyone has heard of that case but as I was reading this book, I kept thinking, How can a parent do this to their own flesh and blood. Mr. Pelzer, I would like to commend you for writing this book. It took a lot of courage and determination. Thank you for writing such a wonderful book

Grasshopper Summer - book cover picture

Grasshopper Summer by Ann Turner is about Sam, a boy, who was quite happy where he was in Kentucky. Then his father decided to move the family west to start a new life in Dakota Territory. Sam's younger brother Billy was excited about the idea, but Sam hated it. Sam never thought of leaving his grandparents, and friends.
It was after the Civil War, and Sam's father was having a tough time without slaves so he decided to move his family to Dakota Territory. When Sam and his family had to move north his father wanted them to start getting used to not having slaves. Sam never thought of meeting people along the way. The family worked hard to make their dugout house. They worked through the weeks and gathered seed.
Sam started to see things a little differently and started to like the west. This book is good for people who like to read about survival after the Civil War.

An extremely powerful and revealing book

Book title: The Rape of Nanking

The Rape of Nanking - book cover picture

This book literally took my breath away. I know that people in Hong Kong have an enormously deep grudge against the Japanese and yet I never fully understood the enormity of their actions against innocent civilians. Having studied the second World War at school in England, I immediately felt annoyed that we had so lightly touched upon the war in the Pacific, learning simply about the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan and immediately feeling that we, the Western allies had been at fault against the Japanese civilians and I was now finally able to learn of some of their motives for their actions. I was truly frustrated to find that I could not find a copy of this book at any major bookshops throughout England, although not meant this is again hiding the truth, or at least a point of view.

Penrose is heading in the right direction

The Emperor's New Mind: Concerning Computers, Minds, and the Laws of Physics (Popular Science) - book cover picture

This is a book of insights. Penrose is touching the edge of the truth about the human mind but just missed it. I am now reading another book that has a section called "Emperor Penrose's Mind". In my opinion, that book is truly revolutionary in helping us understand the nature of reality and of the human mind. The author suggests that the square root of -1 is the psy-factor in laws of quantum mechanics and theories of relativity. He also shows why John Searle, Douglas Hofstdater and Denial Dennett all committed the Fallacy of Unity Projection. the author agrees with Penrose that quantum mechanics is a possible key to the mystery of the mind, and the mind is more fundamental than material. The most fascinating part is that all these ideas are demonstrated in sci-fi like adventure stories (thought experiments) in virtual reality. The title of the book is, Get Real: A Philosophical Adventure in Virtual Reality, by Philip Zhai.

Holes (Readers Circle) - book cover picture

I borrowed this book from a friend because he said it was hillarious, so I decided to try it out. I am not a usual reader of books, so I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it. But, I loved it. It was excellent because he sort of lets you think what's going to happen on your on. He mixes a history that relates to the story with the actual events occuring. It makes you think,"Hey, that's Sam from the history!" This book was so good, I completed it in 2 days. I am going to use this book for my oral report in my English class.
