The Tragedy of King Lear (The New Cambridge Shakespeare) - book cover picture

I just want to say to all the teenagers out there who think Shakespeare is this old fart who only dinosaurs like ... YOU'RE MISSING OUT ON THE BEST THING EVER. I read "King Lear" as dubiously as a regular teenager - and I ended up shouting out loud in horror at some of the bits in it - there is some sick sick sick cool cool cool stuff in there. (If you really hate it, then just read the final scene of Act 3 - it's as brutal as any horror movie!!!!)

One of the most enjoyable books in recent years

The End of Science (Helix Books) - book cover picture

The End of Science is delightful to read. Horgan has done a masterful job with his subject. It is fun to see what many leading scientists are like and what they are thinking about science. It is clear from the book that the scientists themselves do not agree about the future of science. Horgan's thesis that science is in its twilight years is unprovable, but it is persuasive and provides coherence to the book. The arcane details of science can be hard to follow, but the issues of the future and role of science are meaningful to anyone.

Winner Within - Makes you a Winner in General!

The Winner Within - book cover picture

I received the book as a gift - and what a gift! The material covered is to do with team players. However, what actually happens is that if a person is open, he or she will find that this book gives personal growth as well. Excellently written, with real life examples all the way, it is invaluable. We have a project at the office that really needs to succeed, but without teaming it won't. This book makes the difference between success and failure! It has been said Pat goes on a bit now and again, but so what?! The focus of the book is to give people options, to make them aware of what to do and how to do - that is the essence! I have recommended this book not only to my office but to our training company that helps with team building.

The Pillars of the Earth - book cover picture

An amazing departure from your other works, (not that I did'nt like them), this is your most amazing achievement so far. You take us to the edge of what was known as civilized England and show us just how barbaric the times were. Your depiction of the cruelities and joys of life in those times are just short of masterful. Thank you for the thouroughly enjoyable read and keep up the splendid work that you always do.

How to Eat: The Pleasures and Principles of Good Food - book cover picture

There simply aren't enough words to describe how good 'How to Eat' is. Possibly the best cookery book ever written, for fans of Lawson and newcomers alike, it provides a comprehensive and guide to everything you could ever hope to make in your kitchen - for experienced cooks and complete beginners, goldfish and llamas... Without being bossy in the Delia Smith sense, her recipies are detailed yet leave room for improvisation - and the introductory paragraphs to each chapter should be read for literary merit alone. Without meaning to sound too corny, you'll never need to buy another cookery book.

The best book I had -- and I had them all!

Book title: Pregnancy and Childbirth

Pregnancy and Childbirth - book cover picture

I loved this book. It was full of lots of detailed information, much more detailed than other books of similar subject. It has an excellent section that tracks the development of the fetus so the mother-to-be can follow along, and in the early weeks of pregnancy, it even breaks it down day by day in some cases! I had at least a dozen books that I read cover to cover, but this is the one I kept going back to, because it was the one that consistently had the information I needed. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who is really "into" their pregnancy experience!

The Big Nowhere - book cover picture

I read this book originally in the '80s after reading Ellroy's "Blood on the Moon" (part of the late and unlamented Sgt. Lloyd Hopkins series). I have reread it again resently and reminded myself why TBN put a hook in me for Ellroy's work. Rich of prose and complex of plot this book describes a series of interwoven lives that are one by one destroyed by deeply concealed secrets and past actions. At the end of the novel the dense plot simply falls in on itself. Isn't that the way good noir is supposed to be ?

The best I found.

The Living Trust : The Failproof Way to Pass Along Your Estate to Your Heirs - book cover picture

It is not for writing your own trust, but it was by far the best for the legal information, explanations and especially case scenarios. After reading 3-4 other books, I found this to have the clearest presentation of a complex subject; but of even greater value--it gave common (but unknown to me and not mentioned in other books) alternatives for dealing with problem personal situations like irresponsible children or family. Ex: dividing estate into three dispursements given out at five year intervals to give heirs a chance to "blow it" and then grow up. Because of this book alone, I was able to make decisions I was finally comfortable with.

Best book I have read in years!

Book title: The Blue Place

The Blue Place - book cover picture

To say well written does not do Blue place justice. Nicola Griffith has given us a landmark book of prose. Her descriptions paint pictures, her characters live. Normally I skim books. I savoured this one. I am buying the hard cover so that Blue Place can be in my permanent library, a reference to how to write. I reccommend all of her books to everyone, but I save my unlimited praise for Blue Place. Enjoy it!

Brave, funny, heartbreaking...

Book title: Running with Scissors

Running with Scissors - book cover picture

One critic commented that such an abusive, dysfunctional childhood should not be presented humorously, but it's actually very healthy to do so. Humor was how Burroughs survived. It makes him an outstanding role model for creative people from tortured backgrounds, proving you can, indeed, turn lemons into lemonade. As for all the people who comare him to David Sedaris: I find Burroughs to be a better writer. He's willing to be darker, go deeper, and be more of a risk-taker. I enjoy Sedaris, but "Scissors" leaves you feeling so much more than just pleasantly amused. Also, the writing has a naive, innocent quality. For a book about horrific, sophisticated issues, its style lifts it above the grim, the cynical and the glib. I read "Dry," too, and loved it , too. I hope to hear more from Augusten and I pray he's doing well. He deserves all the yummies he once dreamed of as a boy. I wish him lots of limousines.
