Silence of the Lambs - book cover picture

In Thomas Harris's Silence of the Lambs, he truly characterizes what a horror story is. His creation of horror: Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Lecter is a former psychologist who has turned into a man eating mind manipulating criminal. After eating 9 people, he is finally caught and put in jail. Harris has put this villain and its counterpart Clarice Starling, a FBI hopeful, into a story with nonstop suspense and action. Not only does it involve the horrifying and deceptive Hannibal Lecter but also the murderous Buffalo Bill. Bill is a nationwide known killer who terrifies any woman of being killed and then skinned. Clarice and other FBI agents are responsible to find Buffalo Bill and the only way to get information about him is through Dr. Lecter. This book is for anyone that likes thrillers that never have a boring situation or scene. The book is a classic, a masterpiece I truly will cherish for the rest of my years.

The best UNIX overview for system administrators ever!

Book title: UNIX System Administration Handbook (Bk\CD ROM) (2nd Edition)
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
UNIX System Administration Handbook (Bk\CD ROM) (2nd Edition) - book cover picture

If you want to know how does the UNIX work - this is the book of choice. It covers all major aspects of UNIX operation and the administrator's involvement in it :-). The books coveres all major UNIX flavours (except Linux) and will be your book of choice in almost any environment. Be careful - the book is not "learn it in 24hours" - it requires some knowledge and experience, so if you are newbie - this will not be your book. Otherwise the book will bring you joy and enlightment, the humor is refreshing. Also I agree with most of the authors' opinions expressed there. Unfortunately the vendors are changing their products faster then the authors can cope but that's what the manuals are used (and paid) for. As a conclusion - for average to top level UNIX administrators I haven't seen a better book ever.

Absolutely my favorite!

Book title: The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale - book cover picture

The Handmaid's Tale is absolutely my favorite book by my favorite author. It's a stunning combination of absolutely amazing social commentary and just plain fascinating fiction. I sound like I'm gushing, I know, but this book really is that good. If you've never read Atwood, start with this one; if you've never read it and don't like some of Atwood's other work, read this anyway. It's wonderful, and very eye-opening. Just read it.

One of my favorite books!

Book title: Turtle Moon
Rating: 5/5

Turtle Moon - book cover picture

I read Hoffman's HERE ON EARTH and was so moved by it. I felt it was a story that could happen to anyone. Next, I read THE RIVER KING and was soooo disappointed. But I didn't give up. TURTLE MOON does not have one extra word! The writing was concise and superb. I hate excessive description and love that Hoffman is smart enough to let us use our imagainations to build scenery and decide how the characters will look. I was riveted and read it in only two days. I categorize it as a "comfortable" book--it is easy to get into, there's not a ton of exposition and the characters are interesting. I found myself constantly wondering what could possibly happen next. The perfect novel. I will definitely try Hoffman again.

SPY Assassinates The Literary Brat Pack

Book title: SPY NOTES
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
SPY NOTES - book cover picture

The late great satirical magazine SPY took upon itself the duty of harassing those oh-so-fashionable novelists of the 1980's: Tama Janowitz, Bret Easton Ellis, and especially Jay McInerney (who got a cover story by his angry ex-wife.) This book is a parody of Cliff Notes and features SPY's trademark withering sarcasm. It's really quite nastily entertaining. Most of it was written by Paul Simms, who later went on to write and produce the marvelous sitcom "NewsRadio." (One of the authors mocked here at the beginning of his career is David Foster Wallace, who has gone on to reveal himself as a major talent.)

Learning Veterinary Terminology - book cover picture

I had waited to buy this book for a while and finally purchased it recently. I'm an 18 year old pre-veterinary medicine major. I found this book amazing!! It not only teaches you the terminology required to understand veterinary medicine but also teaches you anatomy of a wide variety of animals and also is somewhat of a veterinary dictionary because at the end of most chapters there is an exceptionaly good glossary of terms used. It also uses methods such as croosword puzzles and word finds along with other tools to make learning easier! If your a pre-vet major or vet student get this book!! It's a bargain for all you get.

Good intro to VHDL

VHDL Starter's Guide - book cover picture

Mr Yalamanchili does a great job of introducing the reader to VHDL. The book is long enough to get you to understand the VHDL language, without being so long as to bore you to tears. After reading the book, I feel that I could design most any simple-medium complexity digital circuit in VHDL without much difficulty. My only complaint is the author's poor indenting of his code. This makes it difficult at times to follow the flow of his code. Other than this minor flaw, the book is perfect.

Made a Huge Impact On My Life...

Book title: The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

...and it only took five years!

Amazingly enough, I haven't read this book since 10th grade. And back then, I absolutely loathed it. Maybe because my teacher kept insisting to me that it was about "how society has moved away from spiritualism", which I just wasn't buying. At the time, I thought it was just about some whiny kid who hated absolutely EVERYTHING.

It took five years, but I FINALLY get it. Holden's favorite thing to think was that people are phony. Well, guess what? People ARE phony. The book may not be about society moving away from spiritualism, but it is about society, and how hypocritical it is. For me, the brilliance of this book is that Salinger had the balls to write it in the first place. Through Holden he stood up and told society exactly what he thinks about it. Three cheers for Salinger!

A Peak into a time of transition

How the Irish Saved Civilization : The Untold Story of Ireland's Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe - book cover picture

A great read for the average reader; an even better read if you know a little latin. Certainly not the work of a professional historian but this book gives a great feel of the time. I'm going to have to read this book again and again. Thomas not only provides reasons why this transition happened but he predicts that it will happen again because the forces involved are universal. The chilling end was like a cold slap in the face. If anything were wrong with this book I would say that the book is too short. One if left wanting more on the wandering Irish monks and more on the present Irish culture.

They knew just enough to get into trouble

Book title: Isaac's Storm : A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History

Isaac's Storm : A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History - book cover picture

This is fascinating book both for the story of the disaster and for the depiction of life and attitudes in 1900. It is amazing that when they really knew so little about science, they felt they had learned all there was to know, including "the Law of Storms."How is it that at the beginning of the century we had this incredible faith in our grasp of the natural world and our ability to control it and now we realize how little influence we really have? When did the disillusion start?
