Keys for the Caged Heart

Tropic of Cancer - book cover picture

This book opened the door to a new way of thinking or me. Discovered at a trying time in my life, it changed my view of life for showing me the resiliency of the heart, the unending newness of the world, and, through it all, the humor of living. Some have Jesus and need him. At one time, Miller was my savior and I feel for him still, long after reading him for the last time. He is Everest, the Deep Blue Sea, the Depth and Beauty of the Night, my soul's salvation. Nothing compares. No one comes close to his gentle, soaring spirit.

Life Skills - book cover picture

A week after I moved from Europe back to the USA, I discovered "Life Skills" by accident at a local Wal-Mart, of all places. At the time, I didn't realise it was Brit chick fiction, which I buy whenever I'm in London. I just about inhaled this book. Katie Fforde writes so well, I could see myself with the heroine on this crowded and cramped hotel boat, maneuvering tedious waterways and coping with the weirdo guests. I stayed up all night just to finish it, and I was genuinely sorry when the story ended. This is not "War and Peace," but a fun, escapist read, which reminded me of my various Brit friends, most of whom act and talk just like Katie's characters. I liked this so much, I bought the rest of her paperbacks on my last trip to London! For those who don't know Katie Fforde's writing, "Life Skills" is a fab introduction.

Armageddon: The Battle for Germany, 1944-1945 - book cover picture

Max Hastings has penned a magisterial masterpiece, one of the finest war histories that I have ever read. As an author, his attention to detail is meticulous, his reporting first-rate. As an analyst, his thoughts are derived from the facts he has unearthed, grounded soberly in the realities of the time. This tale of bloodshed at a time of foreseen outcomes tells more about the horrors of war, and the cold calculations that can go into its execution, than any work I have ever read or seen.

The Big Blowdown - book cover picture

Pelecanos continues to deliver the goods, this time stepping back even further in time from his earlier books--the novel stretches from immediately before WWII, interweaves the characters' experiences in the war, and tells a sordid tale of ruined lives in postwar D.C.The author continues his trademark use of very specific places and period music, and once again creates flawed but wonderful characters and believable situations. The violence still has the capacity to shock and the reader really feels for the characters. This is as gripping and intense as anything he has written and I highly recommend it.

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

The Poisonwood Bible - book cover picture

I loved this book! I was an adult during the time of Patrice Lumumba. I am so ashamed that it took this work of fiction to awaken me to Congo (Zaire) history. Any book that inspires me to read more about its subject has done its job and more. I loved the five women who narrated their stories and loathed their religious fanatic husband and father. I was awed by the skill and wit it took for the author to create Adah. Remarkable. This is quite a departure for Kingsolver, who usually writes about the American Southwest. Brava!

A Beautiful Novel of Love in a Class-bound Society

Book title: The Woodlanders

The Woodlanders - book cover picture

Unlike some of Hardy's other classic works, such as The Mayor of Casterbridge, with its theme of "the individual" against "fate," The Woodlanders has received little attention in this country. Perhaps that is because it deals so strongly with the themes of class privelege and class conflict, usually associated in this holy land of capitalism with the Khmer Rouge and Stalin. But it is a magnificent and rewarding work of art. Jacques Barzun and Henry James sneered at it because of its hostile treatment of the upper classes, but that is a mark in its favor. Anything opposed by those two must stand for progress and human emancipation.

Annie on My Mind - book cover picture

This book is the first book I have read that deals with lesbianism, and just coming of age. I enjoyed it so much to the point where I started to read it right when I got it, read it until midnight, went to sleep, woke up at six in the morning, opened it up again, and finished it off. This book doesn't have the lesbian cliches or anything, it doesn't really even label them, its just two people that are in love with each other, and undergo ignorance and stupidity...I recommend this book to anyone who just wants a good love story... I will soo not give awy the ending, because its kind of predictible anyway, but still, all I have to say is Rosebud...Yeah, someone told me, and it totally ruined Citizen Kane(sp?) for me.

What Are We Fighting For?: Sex, Race, Class, and the Future of Feminism - book cover picture

I find it enormously refreshing to read good economic analysis of feminist issues by a "noneconomist". Her excursions are not idle pleasure trips: rather, they connect vitally important material to the contiguous terrain. And making connections is a large part of what feminism is about. As is not insisting on formats or subjects which happen to be the academic fashion. Academic fashion, as Russ has noted copiously here and in _How to Suppress Women's Writing_, has not been particularly advantageous for women.

This Trilogy is the most interesting I've ever read

The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty (Sleeping Beauty) - book cover picture

I've read this trilogy 3 times now and each time I read it, I pick up on things I never noticed before. It is written very detailed so that when the characters are humiliated, I will blush because I understand their feelings. This book is very sexual including both heterosexual and homosexual situations with both males and females - but it's not written in a typical pornographic way.(Not like the stories you read on Playboy or Penthouse). It's almost sweet.
I recommend this book to anyone who is opened minded about sex - but you might want to have your spouse or partner close by...just a recommendation.

If You Come Softly - book cover picture

When I picked this book up, I wasn't planning on falling in love with it. It was so wonderful, I chose to do a book report on it (which by the way earned me an A) The writting style is wonderful, it kept me turning page after page. I wont give away the ending, but I was moved! Finally, an author has written something that is completly real. In a world where mixing races is "taboo" Woodson shows that a love between two people is special and more important that others opinions! Read this book if you have a heart!
