The Presbyterian Controversy: Fundamentalists, Modernists, and Moderates (Religion in America) - book cover picture

An insightful and enjoyable survey of the people and ideas which split the Presbyterian Church in the 1930s. Through careful research and a captivating style, Longfield studies indepth the main characters of the Fundamentalist/Moderist controversary in the Presbyterian Church. Sympathetic to both sides, he shows how relaxing theological standards began to blunt the church's ability to speak to its members and society. Important reading for anyone trying to discover the roots of decline in mainline churches in America today.

Gotta Go! Gotta Go! - book cover picture

Gotta Go! Gotta Go! is both entirely delightful and wholesomely informative. Not only does it tell of wonderful, mysterious destiny and miraculous transformation, it also introduces the young reader to the idea of a larger world full of excitement and challenge. Adults may be aware of the gentle, ecologically aware voice in the work through introduction of the main charactar and her pursuit while younger readers will repeat Gotta Go! Gotta Go! when asked "What book?". The illustrations are colorful and deft, the prose elegant and simple. Gotta Go! Gotta Go! is another coupe, and like his book the Araboolies of Liberty Street, gives lesson while it delights. Buy this one, it's a winner!

Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time: The Historical Jesus & the Heart of Contemporary Faith - book cover picture

I can't say that very many books have changed my life, but this book is one of several which have been strongly influential. Borg shares a common experience with many of us who grew up in well meaning, but misdirected churches which focus on the god of anger and judgement. A god who demands a rigid personal belief system as the only means of escape from the fires of hell. He shares his personal journey of reawakening to a god of love and acceptance. His shared experience is one which can help many others of us grow up and understand the Bible as a finger pointing to God and not the literal text of absolute doctrine. This book is a must read for anyone who has suffered through a fundamentalist childhood and yet still desires to know God in a mature, meaningful manner.

The Bone People : A Novel - book cover picture

I first read The Bone People eight years ago, when I was 19 and starting my own life. It will always be my favorite book of any kind. It showed me that someone felt the world the same way as I. And I didn't even know that about myself until I was in the middle of this book. It made me want to become a writer, the only bad part being I always measure myself against this book and others like it.
It will make many other novels you would have liked in the past seem drab and convoluted.
Enjoy.

Dante Goes to Hell

The Divine Comedy - book cover picture

John Ciardi's translation of the "Inferno" is by far the most accessible translation for the 'easy reader' of Dante's immortal classic. What Ciardi never forgets is that in Italian, even in 14th century Italian, everything rhymes.
If you have never read this unbelievably vivid poem-- you are missing out.
Political, polemic, strident and beautiful beyond words, Dante remains the Galileo of poetic storytellers. Milton, eat yer heart out.

Wanted Dead Or Alive : The True Story Of Harriet Tubman - book cover picture

I had this book when I was a child and I treasured it. This book introduced me to the life of Harriet Tubman, conductor on the underground railroad (she was so successful at helping people escape slavery that she had a price on her head), Civil War spy (an extremely dangerous undertaking when you consider that captured spies were executed), and servant to the poor. She instantly became my hero. The book is instructive without being preachy, and gave me a sense of Harriet Tubman's incredible strength of character, determination, and courage. In the pages of this book, I found a Great American. She has been a role model for me ever since I read this book. Consider giving this book as a gift to a child you love. The writing is easy to read, the illustrations are gripping, and the main character is a bona fide, real life, honest-to-goodness hero.

In a Dark Wood: The Fight over Forests and the Rising Tyranny of Ecology - book cover picture

Alston Chase brings to this study a true gift of scholarship, and the courage to pursue truth and ignore what is trendy or popular. His approach is refreshing and independent, and everything in this study is thoroughly documented. We need more Alston Chases, especially in a time when environmentalists are unwittingly damaging the environment because they haven't done their homework, and because they treat ecology as a secular religion. This will be the standard work in its field.

Wing to Wing, Oar to Oar: Readings on Courting and Marrying (The Ethics of Everyday Life) - book cover picture

If you don't like reading "classic" literature - that is, literature from another time, place and era, with a perspective utterly distinct (and even contrary) to our own - don't buy this book, as it's an anthology composed solely of excerpts from this literature.

If you do, however, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Not because it will tell you what to think about love, sex, and marriage (as if there is an "answer" to be found!), but because it will give you perspectives other than the one you have for considering your own life.

Excellent text, although from old perspective.

Book title: Orchestration

Orchestration - book cover picture

This is an excellent comprehensive text on orchestration. It's age (circa 1935) gives it obvious limitations for contempary application. However, that same limitation makes it an important tool for historical instrumental information that most other books simply do not have. I got lots of information from the perspective of a turn of the century arranger that I found very interesting. Of course, if all you are interested in is modern instruments and their applications, you may not find this book as interesting as I did.
