Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) - book cover picture

While this book may not have as much action as previous books, it is still worth reading. All the low-star reviewers are basing there reviews on other Harry Potter books; even the worst Harry Potter book (which this is not) should deserve at least 4 stars! I am also inclined to point out the suggested reading age for this book (according to amazon); 9-12. Rowling has included many topics that kids of this age would not fully appreciate.

Understanding How To Create Your Own E-Vision?

Digital Transformation: The Essentials of e-Business Leadership - book cover picture

A lot of people have have made negative comments about this book because it does not give new ideas. This book is not going to provide you with any technical solutions to develope your e-business but it was also not meant to do that. It gives the non-experiened e-businessperson the rules and how to formulate your own vision to how your company should function. It also explains what has changed in business cycle due to the e-commerce factor. I found it was explained very clearly for anybody to understand. The target audience for this book is somebody who is new to e-commerce.

A Battle of Evil versus Good

Pere Goriot (Oxford World's Classics Series) - book cover picture

Father Goriot by Honor? de Balzac is one of the works of La Com?die Humaine. The plot of the story is rather complicated, but as the novel approaches the end, everything starts falling into its proper place. Both wealthy and poor classes are analyzed in the novel through the actions and interests of individuals. Vice characterizes the nature of Parisian society; for this reason, vice opposes and also prevails over virtue . Of course, in order to create the drama of the novel, vice is used to represent a large section of the people living in Paris at the time. The novel illustrates a large segment of the human condition during the first half of the nineteenth century. Furthermore, the powerful evil over good theme of the novel is rather devastating.

How unusual

The Hotel New Hampshire - book cover picture

I was first introduced to John Irving's work my senior year in high school. I was required to read "A Prayer for Owen Meany." Naturally, I was surprised at how funny and complex the novel was, since I "had" to read it. Then I read "The Hotel New Hampshire." I found the book very funny at times, but then all of a sudden so sad and yet so very sweet. Although, I couldn't relate to the eccentric Berry family I did find peace of mind while reading it. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read. I am now a true John Irving fan.

The Volcano Disaster - book cover picture

The Volcano Disaster by Peg Kehret is one of the most exciting books I have ever read. Besides all the action packed into this book, it gives you the best facts on what happened on the day Mt. St. Helens errupted.
It all starts as a class assignment with Warren and Betsy. These two partners are really not close. Warren has no time for this, he wants to continue his grampa's invevtion called the Instant Commuter. It allows you travel throw space to get to a destination. For instance, you can go to New Jersey from Japan in a few seconds. But Warren doesn't know that his grampa's invention can go in time too! Betsy suprises Warren by finding his secret, the Instant Commuter. The invention sent him to the time when Mt. Saint Helens errupts! There's one major problem He can't go back, why, I'm not telling. You'll just have to read The Volcano Disaster!

Feeding the Hungry Heart: The Experience of Compulsive Eating - book cover picture

Because I doubt if Ms. Roth's early years with an abusive mother, emotionally absent father were fiction. Ms. Roth's first book was truly a brave recounting of her conflict with food and you can clearly understand that her childhood had a lot to do with that (as it does for many of us). I also appreciated the writings from other women who've been through the same battles. It really never ends. You have to constantly be vigilant. I would recommend this to anyone who uses food for comfort, anesthesia, etc. The book makes sense.

An Epic Novel

Book title: The Brothers K
Rating: 5/5

The Brothers K - book cover picture

The K in David James Duncan's The Brothers K is as much a nod to the scorer's notation in baseball for a strikeout as it is an homage to Dostoyeski's The Brothers Karamazov. The novel begins in 1956 in Camus, Washington, where Hugh Chance, a minor league baseball pitcher and family patriarch, loses his thumb and atheltic career in an accident working at the local paper mill. The story of the Chance family, Hugh and Laura Chance, their six children (four sons followed by twin daughters), is told by their youngest son Kincaid, with the help of letters, poems, and old school reports written by various family members.

The Brothers K is an original, sprawling, always charming marathon of a novel. Duncan's is a unique voice, stretching out in only his second novel -- a great effort, bursting with warmth and talent.

Book title: Glamorama

Glamorama - book cover picture

In this insightful and hilarious novel, Bret Easton Ellis show that he has finally reached maturity in his writing style, living up to the promise of earlier works such as Less Than Zero and American Psycho. Glamorama is an amusing and provacative look at a society that has come to revolve around images of Hollywood glamour. This novel provides an interesting commentary on the mixing of art and commerce with a faint aura of paranoia that mimics the bustle and confusion of contemporary life. The fast pace and compusive repetitiveness left me exhausted at the end, but it was worth every minute. A truly wonderful novel.

The Tribes of Palos Verdes - book cover picture

Coming from Palos Verdes, my first reason for picking up this book was to see how accurate Nicholson portrayed the community. I was thrilled to read her description of the town, from its screeching peacocks to the rolling waves. Medina's coming of age in a scene so different from the one she was used to in the Midwest was captivating and I couldn't put the book down. This is a quick read, and a book I have gone back to many times when I am looking for something to hold my attention and make me think.

Surprising this wasn't more popular than Grisham!

Against the Wind - book cover picture

Freedman wrote a book that actually has you routing for the "bad guys"! The plot never seems contrived while getting at the truth. The story takes believable turns and has disappointments that add to the suspense. Nothing is too "pat" in this web of legal intrigue. Freedman should be touted as highly, if not higher, than Grisham's legal tales. They are more complex and the characters are much more colorful.
