The Tale of the Unknown Island - book cover picture

I am not familiar with the author's other books, but I really liked this short story. As with a small amount of other foreign writers whose works are translated to English, the story is a huge metaphor. A man wants a boat to explore the unknown island, which can be compared to any personal ventures we have in our own minds. A cleaning woman overhears and wants to go, too. This short book might be the key to simply letting my friend know how I feel about him. It's the journey, not the destination, and keep your eyes open to the people right next to you. You may be missing out and not even know it!

Stone of Tears (Sword of Truth, Book 2) - book cover picture

Goodkind's second novel is a compelling piece of storytelling, full of all one could desire in an epic. Be warned, however- this tale is not for the weak of mind. A reader without the capacity to recognize the oh-so-subtle allegories woven into the tale might find the novel lengthy and dull; its charm is in its subtle ingenuity and casual wit. The characters are deep and real, and the unanticipated twists are truly heart wrenching for those of us who love them all so. I would warn against attempting this book without reading its predecessor, Wizard's First Rule

Regretably Amazon only offers 5 stars. All of O'Brian's work hit 5 stars without breathing hard. Unfortunately this series is winding down, and it shows. Poor and careless editing, and careless ploting are beginning to show. If some of O'Brian's early works can reach 11 or 12 stars (on the Amazon scale) "Blue" only hits about 6 or 7. Having said that, a weak O'Brian is head and shoulders above anyone else's best. He is clearly in a league of his own.

or did this book come first? Well, this was funny like DS(or HIL to SC & LTB) and proves it by the end. If Bokononism is actually a religion I'd sign up. I wasn't sure how I'd rate the book until the last paragraph and it was so great I knew the book would be remembered as a great in my mind. The short chapter format is sort of impersonal but not detrimental. It's look on humans is original and witty.

Raising Your Spirited Child: A Guide for Parents Whose Child Is More Intense, Sensitive, Perceptive, Persistent, Energetic - book cover picture

What an awesome book. We are the parents of a 4 1/2 year old boy who is mostly a hurricane on wheels! This book was recommended to us by friends right at the perfect time when other "knowing" people started to label him as ADHD. Our GP had suggested perhaps we could try Ritalin, but no way, this book has taught us to look at our son, and love him for what he is, even if most days are pretty hard going. I felt that the whole book had been written about our son, as most behaviours described by Mary relate to Wade. It was truly a magical moment to read on and discover we are NOT the only people on earth with a VERY SPIRITED child! Thankyou so much Mary for sharing your knowledge in the way of this book. I only wish you could come to New Zealand to share your seminars with us.

Action, adventure, intrigue, spys, terrorists, politics...

Book title: Cathedral

Cathedral - book cover picture

Much like the novel By the Rivers of Babylon, this novel has a big cast of characters and lots of action and intrigue. DeMille captures the politics involved and shows some evil and good on both sides of the fight.

One of the reasons I love DeMille so much is unfortunately missing in this novel, and that's a first person point of view protagonist. However, there is one main character that is hero of the novel, and while not quite as good, it's reads great and overall the whole story is great.

No need to go over the plot line and details again, so I'll just say that if you enjoy DeMille, you'll like this one too, if you've never read him, well, this is as good a place to start as any, but keep in mind that some of his other novels are quite different.

DeMille is a great novelist if you haven't tried out some of his stuff, you're missing out.

F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald) - book cover picture

This book not only tells the story of _The Great Gatsby_, but shows "Generation X" what it was like to live in the famous "Roaring Twenties." Fitzgerald is a genius and has the best descriptions! Symbolism is prevelant throughout the book, so read carefully! The characters show the shallowness of people, and the idea that money buys everything...even love is hinted at throughout the novel. A definite must read. For those who read it at a young age, read it over again, you won't regret it. I read it sophomore year and I also thought it was a "soap opera," but now _The Great Gatsby_ is my favorite book.

Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson - book cover picture

This is, without a doubt, the best book I have read so far this year. Not only is it a quick read, you will want to read it over and over again when you are feeling down or need some sunlight. Morrie has become my hero, such a strong man with such a great message to put out. He made me look back on my life and question what is and what should be important to me. He reminded me that one should not let the little things get to him, and that one should cherish every moment she has with her loved ones. I guarantee you that you will love this book, and you will want to give it to all your friends so they too can learn from Morrie - I know I did!

Cinderella Story - book cover picture

Without a doubt Bill Murray comes off as the sexiest man alive in this book. Women who read this will be thrown into a wild Bill-desiring frenzy and probably tear their clothes off in public. Whoever would have thought that this Cinderella groundskeeper, just a drip from the bush leagues, would ever make it to playing foursomes with Michael Jordan, Hunter Thompson, Ethel Merman, Klaus von Bulow and Yoda, not to mention Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice? A rollicking romp down the green in a giant earth-devouring threshing machine could not be more fun than reading this book. You will desire this book more than sex or cigarettes once you have completed it. I know I do
