J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) - book cover picture

If my memory is correct, Tolkien's main motivation for writing these books was to entertain readers. To his credit, he has. I would be hesitant to look for hidden meanings or philosophical undertones in these stories, however. When anyone sits down to write something, they are inescapably hindered, at least to some extent, by their own prejudices and social position. Are there racist undertones to The Lord of the Rings? Maybe. The books are clearly not without fault. Never the less, I have enjoyed reading them more than any other book I have picked up.

The real myth of the west

Book title: Roughing It: The Works of Mark Twain

Roughing It: The Works of Mark Twain - book cover picture

Before Clint Eastwood tore apart the mythic West in Unforgiven, Mark Twain's travelogue/novel portrayed the West as a humorous, amorally violent, rapacious, and racist land of opportunity, not all of it good. Most people would characterize the West like that now: testament to the staying power of Twain's prose. The "Genuine Mexican Plug" and "Lost in the Snow" episodes are magnificient. Roughing It also acts as a satirical outrider for Huck Finn. If you want the feel of a stage-coach, read the first section whenever you travel, just as George Plimpton does in his Introduction

Much more than a mistery novel

Book title: The Flanders Panel
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Flanders Panel - book cover picture

I would highly recommned the book to all the people who love good mistery novel, which beside a very good plot, offers much more. The story of an old flemish painting representing two friends playing chess and a woman, sitting in the back, reading a book becomes intelinked to the life of a Madrid's art expert Julia and her circle of friends. Through discovery of the history and story of the painting her life and lives of her friends come into danger through "a plot" what it seems to be diabolic and genious at the same time. It offers a challenge to every reader, because it really is much more than a mistery novel. Specially recommended to all the chess players outthere.

Tiger has two mentally disabled parents and her classmates
are always teasing her.so when her granny dies she has to
choose between living with her parents or her aunt.I won't
tell you what she chooses you'll have to read to find out.
One of my favorite parts of this book is when her best friend
Jesse Wade kisses her.she is so mean to him after that but
after a while she forgives him.I know you'll enjoy this book
because I did.I give it five stars!!

Way of the Heart - book cover picture

Nine years ago when I was still a teenager, I obtained this book from my late Parish Priest in Yola, Nigeria. Hardly had I started reading it when I realised it was speaking to me as a person. Nouwen's introduction to the life of the Desert Fathers and the role Silence, Solitude and Prayer can have on our lives is thought provoking. This book has affected me in the most positive of ways. It is for everyone, for those busy with work, for those who go to Church, for those who frequent the bars...evreyone. This book would introduce a peaceful and calm spirituality to you - I highly recommend it and would not hesistate to give it a 10 star!!

Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read. This book got me started in investing. What an incredible overview of business cycles and waves and economic indicators. Gives such readable ananlysis on how and why our economy moves. Makes you want to watch M1,M2 and M3. But the best part of this book is his ability to tie in mass pyschology from the tulip bust in Holland to John Maynard Keynes' discussion of "to the sixth degree." How you need to predict what people are predicting the market will do. And then it masterfully sums it all up in an excellent discussion of chaos theory and the benefits and limits of using charts to predict. Makes you discount anything but the next day weather forecasts. I went and read about 5 more scientific treatisties on chaos theory. Want a foundation upon which to invest and invest with shrewdenss. READ THIS BOOK! Find it in a library, anywhere.

Beach Music - book cover picture

I rank only a very few books to be a 5 star novel. "The Thorn Birds", "The Count of Monte Cristo", "Gone With the Wind", and "Beach Music". I could not put the book down and bought the book on tape to do it again. Since I have lived the times and many of the places it was like I was there. I laughed, cried, cheered, and mourned. The book is wonderful. I think I will read it again!

Best Historical Fiction I've Ever Read...

Book title: Gates of Fire

Gates of Fire - book cover picture

Steven Pressfield's "Gates of Fire" is by far the best Historical Fiction I've ever read. The dialogue is properly realistic and easy-to-follow, but still sounds archaic enough to fit the story. The action is...gut wrenching--imagine the visuals from "Saving Private Ryan" in prose and you've got the battle scenes in "Gates of Fire." The plot is epic, based on the bold Greek defense of the Hot Gates (Thermopylae) from the invading Persians.I only wish that Mr. Pressfield would write a book on Marathon.

Silver Star (Seals: The Warrior Breed, Book 1) - book cover picture

This book shows the first generation of SEALs with the first NCDU and UDT in WWII. It's a book about camaraderie, spirit, and bravery of the men who fought and sometimes died in units that typically sustained 50-90% casualties on missions. It is incredibly well-written and shows the true face of war and what these men faced.
A lot of people see war as being glory and honor and courage and everything goes as planned. It never is. The men who are most affected are right here in this novel. Pick it up and read it unless you can't handle the truth

Great Collaboration = Terrific Read

Book title: Brimstone
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Brimstone - book cover picture

The long awaited return of "Team Preston and Child" with a great summer read is a success. Brimstone brings back FBI special agent Aloysius Pendergast and Sergeant Vincent Agoste. The pair team up to solve murders with a Mephistophelean twist. The victims are burned to a crisp with devilish clues left behind including the overpowering smell of sulphur and burned meat. In one case, a cloven hoof mark is etched into the floor. At almost 500 pages this book may seem lengthy, but it goes quickly. We're given a brief insight into the authors' next novel when Pendergast mentions his diabolical, evil twin brother whom he represents as a danger to mankind. However, we leave our hero buried alive in the crypt of a thousand year old Italian castle. Will he make another one of his miraculous escapes, or is this really Pendergast's demise? The authors answer that question, sort of, on the very last page. Talk about a tease for their next collaboration! Who has the movie rights?
