Juster has created not just a story, but a family heirloom!

The first time I read Norton Juster's "The Phantom Tollbooth", I was 9 years old. Almost 20 years later, that book still stands out as one of my fondest childhood memories. Juster takes the most powerful and important aspect of being a child, your imagination, and uses it brilliantly to present real-world concepts. Not only was it an entertaining read, it was also an informative one, even if I didn't know it then. It's a book that I'll encourage MY children to read.

I was startled at some negative reviews of "Black Notice". I "read" the audio version and found it superb, as I have several of her other works in the Scarpetta series. How I love Kay Scarpetta! A physician, lawyer, scientist and person of intellect - AND a "real" person with heart. To get into "Black Notice", one needs some familiarity with the characters - Dr. Scarpetta's beloved niece, Lucy, the now deceased Benton, and the all-too-believable Marino (what a great character!). You MUST have the stomach for sometimes excruciating forensic detail (I can't help it - I find it fascinating), but start with two or three other books in the Kay Scarpetta series first to become familiar with the characters. Please keep writing, Patricia!

The Firm is truly a classic that should not be ingnored. Its the basic rags to riches tale that shows being rich is not all its cracked up to be. John Grisham gives you an inside look at a business ran by the mafia and the consequences people hve to pay when they try to snitch or leave, no one leaves alive. The firm will have you rooting for the good guys all the way to the end. A good book to read on a rainy day because if you have a busy day ahead, you will not be able to get anything done because you won't be able to put the book down.

You can get the summary of this book elsewhere. Suffice it to say that "Beloved" is the literary masterpiece of the late 20th century. It didn't win the Pulitzer and Morrison didn't win the Nobel for nothing. Beloved must be read several times, use the cliff notes if you have to. It is worth it. The magical lyricism that Morrison uses to create Sethe's story is amazing. How can she write like this?, you wonder. Simply astounding.

Among all of Guy Gavriel Kay's books, this is my favorite. And that's saying a lot.
For the high caliber of writing, and the timelessnes of his themes, I consider most of Kay's books to be of literature caliber. When was the last time you re-read paragraphs of a fantasy book just to savor them one more time? Until I stumbled across his works a couple years ago, I didn't know books like this existed.
Be warned, though, reading Kay could inadvertently shrink your future reading lists. My tolerance for run-of-the-mill fiction is fading fast.

dreams
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
This book is about knowing that some dreams are too far from reach, yet we still always try to attain them. Like Gatsby, we are taunted by how close we can come to that dream, but in the end, we realize that our efforts are fruitless. Each of us have our own "Daisy" -- each person did during the 20's, each person does now, each person will in the future -- The Great Gatsby is a classic. Fitzgerald does a fantastic job depicting a timeless theme that people of all time periods have experienced.

The unwanted truths
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
I think that this book was a good book, although it was very, very boring in the beginning and some what boring towards the middle. Other than that I thought it was very good. Lois Duncan captured the unwanted truths about a wonderful club such as the daughters of eve. The way that Irene lead the girls with her hatred of dependence on a man. It seemed to me that just because of one bad little run-in with a man she deemed all men to be that way. To any one that feels that way they should take a look at this book before taking another step. I also highly recommend this book to high school girls with uncertainty in planning their future.

I think A is for Alibi is one of the best in the Kinsey Milhone series. I have almost read all of them and wonder what Sue will do when she finishes the alphabet. I really like Kinsey Milhone the character. She is very real and I like the descriptions of her doing stuff like eating junkfood, cutting her own hair etc. etc. We all do that kind of stuff and her realness is part of her charm. Yes, sometimes the plots are thin, and the author could work on that, but still her books are very appealing. Keep up the Great work Sue!

A Review of The Human Record: Sources of Global History
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Human Record: Sources of Global History is an excellent introduction for History students in analyzing and discussing primary source material. The editors have selected not only the most interesting but also the most useful sources in World History. Selections range from the Epic of Gilgamesh, The Book of Genesis, Code of Hammurabi, the Analects, Bhagavad Gita, etc. The only critque I have is that some of the selections are rather short but if used in conjunction with a text book like Traditions and Encounters: A Global Perspective on the Past, and other supplemental material this book will prove beneficial to instructors and students of any World History course. cdeluca@citrus.ucr.edu
