Just as good as "The Man Who Ate Everything"

These two books should be considered as a pair - they are both of the same structure (small articles), same style (witty yet informative), same approach to knowledge (always trying to instill some) and goal (entertaining to the extreme). The only problem is that they tend to overlap in my mind....For example, which one had the hilarious French Eatathon, which one had the article on ripening fruit, where was the essay about cheese? Regarless, both of these are just excellent works for quick reads. Unlike MFK Fisher, whose ouevre reads like novels, Steingarten seems to have found his gait as the food reviewer in Vogue. The articles seem somehow "Magazinish" and this is not necessarily a bad thing. He takes a fresh approach to food and eating in general - not reverent but certainly serious.

Feeding the Healthy Vegetarian Family - book cover picture

I too first saw this book at the public library and afterwards had to have it for my own. This book has really given me a lot of range for cooking veggie. Most veggie cookbooks call for things you can only find in specialty stores and yield dishes that husbands nor children will touch. I have really appreciatted a veggie cookbook that also comments on how to get you kid to like veggie food. It made me happy to find a pizza SECTION instead of some off the wall pizza recipe! This is a great cookbook for veggie and non-veggie families alike as it truly considers time, taste and expense.

Against the Gods : The Remarkable Story of Risk - book cover picture

As I went through the book, one thing I realized was that we seem to attribute pathbreaking ideas to people without realizing the history behind it all. For instance, it was amazing to learn that Louis Bachelier had derived an option pricing formula (albeit not very robust) before Einstein could discover the properties of Brownian Motion and well before Norbert Wiener's discovery of the Wiener Process! The insight of Daniel Bernoulli on the logarithmic nature of the utility of wealth is in some ways the foundation for Marshallian Utility Theory which in turn, I would argue, is the basis for Lord Keynes' Consumption Theory. This is not to say that we should not give credit to M/s. Black, Scholes & Merton or Lord Keynes but that we should understand that discovery of something entirely new happens very very rarely like Sir Isaac Newton's discovery of Gravity. All in all, a wonderful book. The chapters on Game Theory and Behavioral Finance deserve multiple reads.

Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind - book cover picture

In my opinion, the only marketing concept from the practitioer that break into the academic marketing textbook. As a part-time lecturer in Marketing in Bangkok Thailand, I recommend the book to all my students. (The article that I assigned to all my students is "Marketing Myopia" by Ted Levitt) I have also received good feedback from my students. It's also the reason I read other of the authors' book. This one is the one I like most though. I am reading the "New"Positioning at the time being.
The first time I read it, I just can't put it down and finish in one pass laying on the couch in the MBA lounge during my graduate studies' day at 10 pm. Imagine how addicted and interesting the book is. If you want to see the practioner side of marketing. READ IT!

An envelope of human journey and spiritual strength

A Prayer for Owen Meany - book cover picture

I see the light that shirnes through Owen's ears and wonder about the lifting game for it seems that I am elevated by the experience of living with Owen. His tribute to the spiritual, real side of existence allows for power in gravel dust and small voice. I felt that I had become the blanket that wrapped the baby Jesus, the diamond wheel that tore through the living and the dead, the red dress that sent forth the unknown and the armadillo that was all seeing. Owen wanted it to be that way, yet blocked the straight path to understanding. John Irving worked a masterpiece.

Earth - book cover picture

Earth by David Brin is a thought provoking book set in the year 2038. There is increased skin cancer due to the deterioration of the ozone layer. There are major ecological disasters. There is a world war and an increase in the size of the internet. The weather warms in the Yukon of Canada and people begin to settle there. The bay of biscay is used as a giant fish farm and other marvels are revealed. The most alarming development is a manmade black hole destroying the core of the Earth. Scientist Alex Lustig battles the problem making you wonder where all the smarter than Human Artificial Intelligence programs are to do the job. If it really got as hot as the book Earth predicts in 2038, America would have to bring humanitarian relief to a superheated Mexico. I highly recommend David Brins other books as well.

Monster : The Autobiography of an L.A.Gang Member - book cover picture

For anyone wanting to cut through the Hollywood hype relating to gangs, Sanyika Shakur's superb 'Monster'is required reading. From the off, it's all too easy to see how gang culture became a surrogate family for the-then Kody Scott, and how ultimately it was to lead him into a downward spiral of guns, drugs and murder. The only book - having left the first copy on a train - I've ever bought a second time after finishing.

Stalingrad: The Fateful Siege, 1942-1943 - book cover picture

As World War II histories go, this is as good as they get.Vivid in my mind over a year since reading it:--the anti-tank dogs the Germans met on the outskirts of Moscow.--Stalin's directive in October ordering cowards to be shot on site, and those comrades refusing to shoot them to be shot on site, resulting in over 10,000 Russian casualties in one day.Beevor has created a masterpiece that reads so well and seems so extraordinary that the reader is frequently overcome with constant realizations that all this actually happened. Our days are filled with slow computers, bad traffic, noisy neighbors - the events in this book seem so outlandish it's hard to remember sentence-by-sentence that this is history. This book moved me to tears more than once, and could possibly qualify for the best non-fiction book I've ever picked up.A MUST READ.

Dr. Bernstein is a brillant student of the stock market. Everything in the book is original material that leads one to appreciate the use of index mutual funds in a portfolio. This classic is required reading for anyone who wants to capture market returns. Of the 15 best books written over the last 35 years on investing this book tops the list. As a companion to this book I suggest a new little book by Gordon L. Think of it as a cookbook for the investor.
