Tom Wolfe's vivid rendition of Al Shepard's first journey into space gave me an almost physical experience of being launched into the big black. Read this book - for the historical and political background of the Mercury program, for insights into the psyches of astrounauts/pilots and their missuses, and read it for all the indispensable trivia. Or read it just in order to get a glimpse of what a trip into space actually feels like.

One of Roald Dahl's Most Enjoyable Books

The Witches (Puffin Novels) - book cover picture

"The Witches" is another "typical" Dahl book, though no two are ever alike. Filled with chase scenes, surprises and magical spells, children will be delighted with this suspenseful, wonderful story. What Dahl understands is that children like to be scared, and he does plenty of scaring in this little book. A great idea for grandparents to read to their grandchildren; the movie is also scary and fun.

This is a wonderful, readable books that instructs on many levels. First, there is the comparison obvious in the name, and the conclusion that we can turn to history for instruction about the present.Second is the stories of visionaries that took huge risks to make the electric telegraph happen. Finally, it is tied together with stories of regular people that made it all happen, from crime to romance it reminds us that our Internet is only important to the extent it affects the lives of the people who use it.

Day No Pigs Would Die - book cover picture

One of Robert Newton Peck's books, A Day No Pigs Would Die, is what I think a really good book. It is about a twelve year Shaker boy who has helped a cow have her calf and is rewarded a young pig. It takes place in the 1930's when Calvin Coolidge was president in the town of Learning, Vermont.
Robert and his pig, Pinky, are growing up together. He takes Pinky to Rutland Fair and Pinky wins best behaved pig. Robert's father's cousin was their neighbor's maid. She comitted suicide. Fall comes, apples are bad, and Robert's father can't shoot a deer. Robert's father is on the verge of dying.
They try to breed Pinky several times, but no babies. Robert's father lives through the winter and dies in the spring. After the night they bury him, Robert says goodnight to his father. Erica

The best book I ever read!...

The Lost Boy: A Foster Child's Search for the Love of a Family - book cover picture

The Lost Boy is a good book. I liked it because I'm glad that I don't have parents like that, like parents that abuse me!I also liked it because he had chances to run away but some of the time he didn't because he knew his mother would be out looking for him 5 minutes later. But,he got sick of changing from foster home to foster home all the time.I recommend this book to people who like reading books that start out sad but in the end they turn out to be ok!!So I know I liked it a lot. It's one of my favorite books now!
You can still read this book if you didn't even read "A Child Called It" because that's what I did and I still got how the story went! Enjoy the book as much as me!!

Read This Book!!

Danger Along the Ohio - book cover picture

Danger Along The Ohio by Patricia Wills'. This book takes place on the Ohio River in 1793. The main characters are Amos Clara and Jonathan. Their mother died after giving birth to Jonathan. Now all they have is a father. Amos, Clara, and Jonathan have a very playful pet cow.

In Danger Along The Ohio Amos Clara and Jonathan get separated from their dad during a heart stopping Indian attack! The problem is they can't find him. My favorite part is when they escape the Indian attack.

I recommend this book to a friend because it is packed with excitement and interest. I give it 5 stars because it is really exciting but it is a little slow at the beginning of the book. Patricia Wills' books are very interesting.

Still the definitive biography

Nietzsche : The Man and his Philosophy - book cover picture

Hollingdale worked side by side with the dean of all Nietzsche scholars, Walter Kaufmann, for many years. His biography of Nietzsche parallels Kaufmann's groundbreaking study "Nietzsche: Philosopher, Psychologist, Antichrist", a watershed in American Nietzsche scholarship. While Kaufmann's work has been eclipsed (see R. Schacht's "Nietzsche") in terms of philosophical sophistication, Holligdale's biography of Nietzsche remains the very best in detail, breadth, cogency, and intimacy. Its style is unobtrusive and flowing, making it easily accessible to both the everyday reader and the student of the history of ideas. It is indispensible to anyone with even the slightest interest in Nietzsche.

Be-Good-To-Yourself Therapy - book cover picture

I first heard about this book when I received it as a gift in college over 10 years ago. I still have it and still refer to it now and then for its wonderful and simple gems of wisdom. It's a great little book to have for yourself and would make a great pick-me-up for a friend going through a hard time. Its message is simply to listen to your heart and take care of your needs. The little elf illustrations are very poignant and marry well with the text as an encouragement for your soul. I would recommend this and any of the Elf Help books to anyone!

If you have a "?", the Black Book has the answer

Basic Black - book cover picture

I brought this book through a book club that I joined recently. At first I didn't think it could tell me anything that I didn't already know, but it did. This book tells you important things that some of us seem like we didn't know the answers to (i.e., when you go on an interview what is too much when it comes to dressing). It "reminds" us of things that we see and may sometimes do that we shouldn't (i.e., if we are in a resturant and we see other's waiting to be seated, don't continue to hog the table while just talking). The book is really based upon common sense, but sometimes people choose not to use it; therefor, the book reminds you to use those common sense cells located in the brain. It's a good little book to have.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (Vintage) - book cover picture

I was wary of this book due to the praise being poured on it and, for lack of a better term, hype surrounding it. It is an amazing book. It deserves every accolade it receives and then some. I'm afraid to say anything about this book for fear of defacing it. His style is so impressive I actually visualized the events he is describing, although I could personally relate only to the midwest location. Any faults you may find are destroyed by the fact that he has already found them first and let you know. Every emotion you are capable of having is touched yet at the same time it is never forced or pulled from you. I'm afraid I've already said too much of the wrong thing.
