JonBenet : Inside the Murder Investigation - book cover picture

It is very discouraging that a man with so much smarts and so many talents would stand by a woman who in my eyes seriously betrayed him and their family. I believe Steve Thomas's account of the crime warrants extreme merit. The book is not only informative, but fascinating. I don't know how the Ramsey's could openly admit that they completely cooperated with the investigation. When I was in grade school, one of my classmates was murdered and the parents didn't leave the police station until the murder was solved five days later. I know this for a fact because my father was the lead detective on the case. From the evidence presented in this book, circumstantial or not, the outcome led me in only one direction with my finger pointing at one person.

Origins of Genius: Darwinian Perspectives on Creativity - book cover picture

I have read several of Simonton's books and dozens of his scientific articles. This book is without any question his very best. It is absolutely superb! Simonton is always extremely intelligent and awesomely creative. But in his previous works, I sometimes got the feeling that he was racing so fast to be productive that something important was being passed by. But in this extraordinary volume, he seems to have slowed down enough to smell the roses that he himself (as well as other creativity researchers) have flowered, and his careful reflection and superb writing shines in what ranks as possibly the best book yet written on the topic. It is bracingly, jarringly creative, beautifully crafted, highly counter-intuitive, sufficiently well-explained that even a statistical dufus like me can understand, and awesome in its expanse. Anyone who wishes to understand creativity must read this great book.

After the First Death (Laurel Leaf Books) - book cover picture

Robert Cormier writes in a very effective way. He tells things like they are, not as people perceive them. The way he described how Milo felt was touching. The phrase 'the innocence of evil' definitely applies here. Cormier gets into the hearts and souls of people, and shows their flaws and attributes equally and without judging them. He uses multiple narrators so he gets across both sides of the story. It shows great talent to be able to write like that because it is confusing to get the details straight, but he does a good job so his story isn't at all confusing. The way he writes, his characters have emotions and they seem more 'real'. When he kills off two of the main characters, that shows he uniqueness in his writing. The only confusing part was when the general was talking to his son inside his head. Other than that I found this book easy to read and follow.

Eragon (Inheritance, Book 1) - book cover picture

I enjoyed reading Eragon immensely. In the beginning the author's age is evident, but once the story gets rolling it is masterfully written. The story is gripping, fast paced, and fun. For anyone who enjoys reading about the fantasy worlds of magic, dragons, and elves, I highly reccomend this book.

As a disclaimer though, I'd like to mention that not all of his ideas are original. Some are taken from Tolkien, while the books beginning is taken almost directly from the first book in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.

A fine balance - book cover picture

I have been fascinated by the Indian culture for over a year. I have met and talked to several Indians, and none of them could describe the culture, the people, the politics, as detailed as Rohinton Mistry. I laughed, I cried, and the ending, the last 100 pages or so, I wanted to throw the book out the window. I was so angry, so moved by what all these people experienced, I could not bear to read, nor could I bear not to read, the final one hundred pages. It has been a long time since i have been able to sit down and focus on a book so fully - I read all 604 pages in 4 days, very unusual for me. More than ever i want to visit India, and more than ever I feel such a passion for the culture, the people, and the pain that city life and rural life alike produce. I will read this book again and again!

Its Not Just For Animators

Animals in Motion - book cover picture

The images of the dray horses pulling heavy loads is worth the price of admission for me. This is a great reference for artists who want to create realistic images of animals in motion. It's a fabulous settler of bar room bets. It's a source of animated gifs for web designers (I have the running cat image that's been going around.)For people who want to understand animals in general, this is a good reference. I never thought that all the ways an animal can go from point A to point B each had a name to it and that a quadruped can have so many ways to move. Its an interesting historical piece, too. People do not see horses doing useful work any more and it's a reminder that we all had a life before internal combustion. Its an interesting chapter in the history of photography and the history of art, too. (Painting was never the same after people figured out how animals really moved.)

I hate school book reports more than anything in the world. each month we have to read a new book, and i chose the first merlin book last time, and the seven songs of merlin for this month. I loved the first book soo much, so i decided to read the second. I truely hate reading more than anything. This was the first book I actually got into. The wonderful scenery and an all around fantasy backround. I really reccomend it to anyone who likes fantasy...even a little bit.

A Glimpse Into American Empire

The Quiet American - book cover picture

I was challenged in reading this book to think about how America's best of intentions are often times poorly received in the parts of the world we intend to help. Greene's book is echoed in part by Niall Ferguson's Collosus, a book that argues that the idea of American empire is slightly unrealistic given the fact that Americans are unwilling to relocate and get dirty in the same way Englishmen were. The act of colonialism is not compatible with American culture, a fact Greene explores in this wonderful fictional work.

Sharpe's Tiger - book cover picture

After devotedly reading through all 11 (or was it 12) other books, I picked this up without even looking past the title and author. I wasn't disappointed!!It is a delight to read military fiction which doesn't spare the gritty ugly side of war or ignore the occasional repite of commaraderie. It is even more of a delight to have a hero who is so human. Perhpas it makes heroism more in the grasp of the mortal man by realizing just how fallable they all start off and finish...
