James and the Giant Peach, A Children's Novel

James and the Giant Peach - book cover picture

As a 5th grader in my elementary school, I read James and the Giant Peach cover to cover 5 times, out of my own will.Roald Dahl's fiction work in this novel is fantastic, as well as fascinating. This selection describes the story of James, a young boy and his trip across the Atlantic Ocean, on a huge peach! James has several encounters including a shark attack, being attacked by cloud men, and having a run in with a group of Cloud Men, who are painting a rainbow. It all begins when James parents are violently scarfed down by two rhinos on the escape from the London Zoo, and poor James is sent to live with his Aunts, Spiker and Sponge. While working in a garden, James is approached by a fearful looking creature, much like a goblin, who gives him several special wormlike organisms in a plastic bag. With the right recipe, these organisms spell H-E-A-V-E-N for James, yet he drops them onto the ground...As an extraordinary children's bedtime novel, I rate this book Five Stars.

A true achievement

The Making of the Jewish Middle Class: Women, Family, and Identity in Imperial Germany (Studies in Jewish History) - book cover picture

This is a richly rewarding, unforgettable book that will fascinate not only students of Jewish or German history, but anyone interested in modern history in general. Of the book's many virtues, the one I appreciate most is the justice it does to the extraordinary role of German-Jewish women in the development of social welfare and women's rights organizations in pre-1933 Germany. After I read this treasure, I reflected on another book I read entitled Great Jewish Women; unforgivably it profiled Goldie Hawn and Ann Landers but had nary a mention of truly towering figures like Alice Salomon, the founder of modern social work in Germany, and "Soup Kitchen Lina" Morgenstern, whose herculean, selfless and pioneering efforts on behalf of veterans, children and women were all the more admirable given the anti-Semitism of the times. Kaplan's book provides a sorely needed perspective on what really astonishing achievements are all about.

Circles of Confusion (Claire Montrose Mysteries (Hardcover)) - book cover picture

At the heart of this fine novel, the first in what should be a long series, is Claire Montrose, a wonderful heroine that all readers will find good company. She is so appealing that I was as anxious to discover how the complications in her love life would be resolved as I was to learn the truth about the painting she's inherited. I'm ready to follow Claire anywhere she goes in her future adventures. Outstanding.

Hunger (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics) - book cover picture

This is a book that hits most of its readers like a sledgehammer! The days, hours and minutes of the nameless first person are so vivid and bring out every thinkable sensation in the reader. It makes you speechless - only Knut Hamsun himself could put words to describe "Hunger", the very beginning of his breakthrough - the man who taught the best writers of the 20th century how to write. To every single person who has not read "Hunger": This, if anything, is a MUST READ!

Confessions of a Shopaholic - book cover picture

Confessions of a Shopaholic is a delightful book; a real page-turner that I absolutely hated to put down. Rebecca Bloomwood, the main character, takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions and adventures. At different moments throughout the book you laugh at Rebecca, you get mad at her, you find yourself saying "Don't do it!", you feel her shame and desperation, (especially if you've ever bought somethng you know you shouldn't have), and then you find yourself cheering her on. A truly wonderful way to spend a rainy (or sunny for that matter) afternoon.

The Mirababal sisters capture your attention immediatelywith their naivety. This is a true story which has beenfictionalized by the author. It takes place in the Dominican Republic under the dictator Trujillo. The sisters are not political dissedents but find themselves slowly awakening to the reality of their country. They each tell their own stories with voices which portray the horror of prisons and yet have the simple day to day experiences mingled in. Each sister is uniquely different, each wants and needs her story to be heard, and yet they speak together. This story will haunt you.

Day of Confession - book cover picture

Alan Folsom keeps coming up with these great story lines! Day of Confession was another page turner full of action and suspense. He holds your attention from the very first page to the end. Folsom writes in such a way that it's easy to follow all the characters throughout the story. He kept the pace going as fast as he did in Day After Tomorrow. The locations in Rome were so accurate I felt like I was in the city with him. I'll be watching for his next book!

Fun, Witty and Entertaining

Book title: Sex and the City

Sex and the City - book cover picture

Sex and The City is a really funny, witty and insightful read and look at modern romance. It does a great job of capturing the nuances of dating and offers some valuable insights into today's dating culture. While it's not as good as the series, I still found it refreshing for it's viewpoint that is not at all stereotypical. I would also suggest readers take a look at Fried Calamari which is another insightful and witty look at modern dating that I recently read and greatly enjoyed.
