James Reese Brings A Wonderful Intensity To His Readers!

The Book of Shadows - book cover picture

I so thoroughly enjoyed and absorbed this most well constructed and fascinating book! "Book of Shadows" gives respect and credit to one's ability to read and understand......James Reese crafts a marvelous story that is COMPLETE ~ something rarely done these days ~ he writes fully right up to the last word of the book! Giving the reader a opulent feast of extremely intense history, macabre happenings, an inner look into the heart of very unusual characters....... May this author write many more books! We need this talent and willingness to work and give to the reader, after so much of the thin, weak, "clabbered milk" of too many of today's writers!

Compelling and Enjoyable Defense of Signs and Wonders

Surprised by the Power of the Spirit - book cover picture

Jack Deere has written a compelling and enjoyable apologetic in defense of modern day signs and wonders. As a former Dallas Seminary professor, Deere is uniquely qualified to argue his cause with a thorough knowledge of, and sincere empathy for, the cessationist view. I particularly appreciated his adept handling of B.B. Warfield's cessationist arguments. Deere also brings Scriptural insight and Biblical balance to Pentecostal and Charismatic views. His blend of confessional storytelling, along with sound theology, is a wonderful mix resulting in a great literary contribution.

Social realism with a soul

The Rise of David Levinsky (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

I read this novel the first time in college and am re-reading it now. The social realism dazzled me then, but it's the incisive characterization that strikes me more now. You get a sense of objective social conditions, but a deeper and deeper sense of the main characters' souls as you read further along. Some of the sketches of human emotion sound familiar as something that happened to me yesterday.I believe this helps Cahan make his point, of Levinsky's material accomplishment and spiritual impoverishment. He gradually becomes emptied out, so to speak. He has lost his traditional religion and rejected the socialist substitute for religion. At the beginning, he has little but knows who he is - at the end, he has much but seems a stranger to himself.

Kids' Country Knits: More Than 30 Original Patterns for Newborns Through Age 5 - book cover picture

I LOVE this book. As a mother of two small children, a boy and a girl, I am always looking for books that have many cute options for either gender. Not only does this book have that, but I find this collection to be extraordinary. There is a duck all-in-one that is SO cute, barnyard animals to knit and the most adorable cow, pig and hen slippers that you could ever find. I love Debbie Bliss' other books as well, but this one is probably my all time favorite. Many of the knits are done in primary or other vivid colors and involve intarsia knitting. But even if you don't love intarsia there will be cute options for you (fair isle, texture knitting). I am really glad that I decided to splurge on yet another Debbie Bliss book - it has been well worth it!

Many wonderful adventures -- not all happy ones! Recipes!!

Tender at the Bone (Cassette) - book cover picture

Tender at the Bone is filled with many wonderful adventures, although not always happy ones. Imagine being sent off to school in Montreal for several years to learn French cold turkey! It may be nice to know the language, of course, but it seems a rather rude shock for a young kid. It's good to know that she survived to become editor in chief of Gourmet Magazine, but that's 20-20 hindsight. Interestingly enough, amazing meals of all types and varieties are instrumental in her survival of this and other many other adventures, filled with wit, sadness, resourcefulness and occasional mishap. Ms. Reichl is kind enough to include the recipes in this warmly written memoir. I haven't cooked any of the recipes (although I definitely dog-eared some pages, particularly the delicious-looking Artpark Brownies) but I enjoyed reading the book and could easily read it right through again.

Christ's Humanity

Lamb : The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal - book cover picture

There are few things in this world that serve to strengthen my faith as a Christian than those that discuss Christ's humanity. This has happened for me with the films "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Dogma", and it has happened again with Moore's "Lamb". While these are all works of fiction, they make me think, wonder, question, and ultimately make my faith stronger. While this is a personal opinion, and not meant to dictate how others view their own faith, I firmly believe that Christ's mission to save humanity was made possible by Christ being human and experiencing human faults and frailties. And of course, what brings this all together in the end with "Lamb" is that this book is damn funny.

Calico Captive - book cover picture

I loved this book. This book is about a young girl named Mirium who is captured by indians with her family and sold for ransome in a French Colony during the French and Indian War.The young girl is forced to live in a colony where she is looked down upon because she is English. Her worst challenge though is growing up and finding her true self. This is a great novel that will be enjoyed by many readers. I thought this was a great story and would reccomend this book to anyone. This is truely a good work of art. I recommend it greatly to those who love to read.

Ilse Witch (The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara, Book 1) - book cover picture

The only problem I have with the author is the time between novels. I literally hound the book store attendants whilst in the midst of a series. He has a way of making you feel for the characters and maybe care a little bit about them. You tend to take on the mood of his novels and even the individual characters within. So much so, that being caught between books leaves me slightly agitated until I have the next book in the series. In Short - Another enthralling epic from the best fantasy author I've ever read. (please hurry with the next one Mr. Brooks! :-)

Had me laughing my lips off and left me wanting for more...

Book title: A Boy Named Phyllis : A Suburban Memoir

A Boy Named Phyllis : A Suburban Memoir - book cover picture

Frank Decaro explores all of the many issues that every gay man deals with while coming to terms with his own sexual orientation, but he injects humor into some of the most serious of situations and has you laughing 'til you're crying. Every queer in America will identify with Frank's family members and will remember experiencing some of the same feelings -- from the first time that you "touched yourself" to the first time you kissed another boy (and more).

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and his style of writing. The only disappointment was turning the page, realizing that I had reached the end, and thinking, "but that can't be the end. I want closure." Buy it. Read it. You'll love it

Harry Potter Hardcover Boxed Set (Books 1-5) - book cover picture

I have read each Harry Potter novel at least 2 times and I only have 1 word 2 say amazing! These books move very quickly as you encounter a new story and adventure that Harry and the entire wizarding world and eventually the muggle world must go through. The idea is so simple an orphan who finds out that he is a famous wizard and must adjust into a world that he has never experienced. JK Rowling makes each book alive with magic she has a true gift and each book will catch you up in a whirlwind with great plots, believable characters (even though they have magical powers) and descriptions the likes not seen in many novels. These books aren't just for kids they're for anyone who wants to read a story with a good moral with evil being crushed by the forces of good and of friends and family coming together in troubled times.
