Hunt for Red October - book cover picture

The conflict involves defecting Russian submarine, which climaxes when attacked by another Russian submarine... Marko Ramius is a wise, experienced Russian submarine commander, who holds a hidden contempt for the Russian government and the Communist Party. He is recognized by high party officials as a strong and influencial party member, as well as their best submarinecommander. The theme is to fight for what you believe in. I absolutely loved this book. There is nothing I would change or add; it is the best book I have ever read.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money--That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not! - book cover picture

This book really has changed my entire outlook on my financial situation. So many times while reading it, I thought "Dang, that's me exactly". I am much more confident now about my financial future than I was before.I know some reviewers wanted examples, I did too, but then I got to thinking that, had the author provided examples, less people would be helped by the book. as with all things, there are many ways to gain wealth, and they come and go, outdated examples would only lead people to make poor choices and hurt themselves. While I do wish I had some examples and how-to's to work with I'm happy with just the coneptual understanding, I'll find the how-to's on my own.I've ordered his other books as well. Hope they're as insightful.

The most incredible book I've ever seen for Medievalists

Book title: Daily Life in Chaucer's England (The Greenwood Press Daily Life Through History Series)
Rating: 5/5

Daily Life in Chaucer's England (The Greenwood Press Daily Life Through History Series) - book cover picture

Having trudged through literally dozens of books on the fourteenth century, it was delightfully refreshing to read _Daily Life in Chaucer's England_. I do Medieval Re-creation in my spare time, and found this one of the best resources in print. No more searching through dozens of books to find what a peasant's shoes look like, or what a wealthly merchant would be wearing. From the Lord's Prayer in Latin and Olde English, to the rules for a medieval version of backgammon, this book has it all. With just enough detail to give a thorough idea of the times, and a detail bibliography, this book should be the launch pad for anyone interested in the fourteenth century

A great book full of suspense

Book title: Icebound
Rating: 5/5

Icebound - book cover picture

I am 14 years old and this is the first Dean Koontz book I have read and I really enjoyed it. From the moment I picked up this book I couldn't put it down, every page was even more exciting than the last. This book had lots of real heart-thumping suspense that really made you feel what the characters were going through and put you right in the story. Ice bound had a very interesting plot with many realistic characters, and the effective descriptive wording really places the reader in the novel. If you really like an exciting adventure book packed with spine tingling suspense, then I strongly suggest you read this book.

Virtual Destruction = Real Enjoyment

Book title: Virtual Destruction
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Virtual Destruction - book cover picture

_Virtual Destruction_ is KJA's attempt at being the Michael Crichton of late -- writing original screenplays as novels. He succeeds. This novel could be easily translated to the big screen, with little or no alteration to the story. There is not much mystery, as the reader is let in on all the details from all sides, but it is still a fun ride, watching Agent Kreident put all the pieces together in this thriller

Best all-time Sci-Fi book

Book title: Hyperion
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
Hyperion - book cover picture

I've read hudreds of sci-fi books, short stories, etc. - all the Hugo and Nebula award winners ever since I came across Asimov's I, Robot compliation when I was twelve oh so many years ago now.

Hyperion, and too a lesser degree, Fall of Hyperion, still stand as my my two all-time favorites in the genere. Everyone I recommend the series too, once they get past the admittedly difficult to grasp concepts in the beginning, it simply blown away by Hyperion.

I would also recommend Asimov's Foundations Trilogy and Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead (don't bother with the later books in these series - and even Dan's Simmons sequal to Endymion isn't nearly as good as the Hyperion cantos either.)

Thanks, Dan, for such an amazing work!

I'm always a "Prey" fan...but missed Lucas in this one!

Book title: Certain Prey

Certain Prey - book cover picture

This was a departure from the series, but was enjoyable none the less. This book is not nearly as dark or gruesome as some have been, but I did miss Lucas as the main focus of the story. John Sandford was almost playful in the situations he kept putting poor, psycho Carmel Loan. I would enjoy seeing Clara again, but I hope we go back to Lucas being the main focus of the next one. It is refreshing to see a series stay fresh and fun after all these years...unlike other series such as the Patricia Cornwall/Kay Scarpetta books.

A must have for any serious chemist

Advanced Organic Chemistry: Reactions Mechanisms Structure - book cover picture

I ordered this book based on a recommendation of a fellow chemist in my organic chemistry classes. Once I got it, it blew my mind. I ordered it for my advanced organic chemistry class, and it's been extremely helpful. I've taken it to entry-level organic chemistry classes and read it while the professor lectured. Not only did I find everything he was talking about, but it was explained better. If anyone seeks to better themselves in chemistry, or just have it as a reference guide, this book covers both.

Great book, overpriced hardbound

Red Sky at Morning : A Novel (Perennial Classics) - book cover picture

A wonderful book, every bit as good today as when I first read it twenty - some years ago. Beware of this "hardbound" edition, though; it's just a cheap reprint on pulp paper. Quality is lower than the paper used in the paperback and costs 3X more! Boo on Amazon for not warning the reader, but perhaps that's why there will (I hope) always be a place for real live bookstores where you can touch and feel as well as buy. Anyway, read the book, just read the paperback and save your money

good to read when you're 3 months into Java

Practical Java(TM) Programming Language Guide - book cover picture

I've done C++ for 3 years and then switched to Java. After knowing the operational aspects of Java, I read this book and found it's a great asset to help me take 1 step forward. It's particularly good for people switching over from C++, and as such I'd recommend cross reading with some other C++ books (such as Advanced C++ Programming Styles and Idioms by James Coplien) to fully appreciate the difference between the 2 languages.
