Jacob's Rescue - book cover picture

I think Jacob's Rescue was a good book. There was a lot of details which made it interesting. I thought it was bad how the Germans would treat people mainly the Jews. I always wanted to keep reading and didn't want to put the book down. I recommend this book to anyone because it was interesting, sad and you want to read on almost always at the end of a chapter. Once you start reading you can't stop. I would even read it again.

A fine balance - book cover picture

About once a year I find a book that stays in my mind for a long long time. This is one. With profound compassion the author introduces us to four individuals struggling to survive in a world that throws up one obstacle after another. We learn to sympathise with each character while we also see their flaws without any cover-up. This is very moving tale. It is true that the mood is very somber. This is very deliberate. The novel also has some very light moments and expressions of love and care that are unsurpassed. The writing is supurb: characters, place and time are fully drawn. I put this my list of books I will force upon my friend. I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I.

Book title: Hatchet

Hatchet - book cover picture

Hatchet is the best book I have ever read because of the excitment and the adventures that Brian has. The most exciting thing was that he had a hatchet and with out that hatchet Brian would be worthless. With that hatchet he found out a lot of amazing things he could do to survive. Brian is a 13 year old boy with divorce parents. His mom has a secret! During summer he would go to his father's house, during winter he would stay with his mom to go to school. Summer came, Brian was flying to his father's house, while flying, the pilot had a heart attack; so Brian had to set the plain down at some river by himself. If you want to know Brian's mom's secret is and what happens to Brian, you have to read the very exciting book called, Hatchet. You will really enjoy it.

a beautiful book--my daughter and I both loved it

Book title: The Indian School (Trophy Chapter Book)

The Indian School (Trophy Chapter Book) - book cover picture

I loved this book. It is a beautiful portrait of friendship and loss. There are three strong female characters--one white girl, and two Indian girls, all about age 12. When Lucy, the white girl, sees how Raven stands up to Aunt Emma, Lucy begins to wonder whether it is true that "The meek shall inherit the earth." This book uncovers many issues of American history that are usually left buried. I recommend this book to everyone. After I read this book, I turned the cover over and over, searching for a "gold" or "silver" medal. I could not believe that this book had not won any awards.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) - book cover picture

This book it the best so far of Rowling's series. We are introduced to new characters and see our old ones grow. I'm very uneasy about this book being read to young children. There is a very heartwrenching scene in the book that turns away from her traditional style of writing. I actually felt my throat become scratchy and my eyes water. But you will definately enjoy this one. It doesn't end like the others either. You don't feel like everything will be okay. You are left to wonder how she will begin the next story and how will everything turn up. It's exciting.

Past Forgetting : My Memory Lost and Found - book cover picture

Jill Robinson is blessed with an elegant, original prose style, and a life story that gives it wing in Past Forgetting. This is an amazingly original autobiography which takes the reader into the heart and brain of its subject as she struggles to recover memory, and in the process reclaims a fascinating life which began in Hollywood as daughter of MGM head Dore Schary, where she deveoped her writer's eye for the telling detail. What for others would have been a catastrophic event: the siezure which caused a brain storm and severe memory loss, is in her hands a deeply intelligent and entertaining tale of life and memory recaptured. It is also a rare love story of a husband's devotion, and of a woman's courage.

True adventure well told

Book title: The Sinbad Voyage

The Sinbad Voyage - book cover picture

I have read quite a few of Tim Serverin's books. He recreates a journey of historical (or fictional) past and from the keel up presents a wonderfully written account of the venture. I first read Severin's "The Brendan Voyage" in its re-creation of St. Brendan's North Atlantic crossing in the 8th century by oxen leather boat. Here again, the author re-creates an authentic ancient Arabian sailing boat for a journey from Oman to China (across the Indian Ocean and through the Malacca Strait). If you enjoy adventure stories of men, seamanship, a voyage against the elements...this is a book for you.

UNIX System Administration Handbook (Bk\CD ROM) (2nd Edition) - book cover picture

I have come across different UNIX/Linux books as well as e-books but this one beats them all.
It explains different aspects and concepts in a clear, detailed
manner which makes it reasonable for a beginner to understand as well as for an experienced Administrator or Engineer to use
it as a valuable reference. The comparison and contrasting of Red Hat Linux, Solaris, HP-UX and FreeBSD is unique and a must for people working in hybrid UNIX/Linux/xBSD environments.

A true page-turner

Book title: Tamsin

Tamsin - book cover picture

A bit apprehensive after immensely well crafted The Last Unicorn and The Fine and Private Place I was suspicious of a really long lag before coming of Tamsin. But all that evaporated halfway into the first chapter. I found Tamsin to be a great novel hugely entertaining even before all the boggarts got loose. If I had to venture and define it's genre it would be a pastoral ghost story, rich in English folk tradition and reminescent of Simak with his goblins and trolls set in essentially homely Wisconsin countryside. Oh, yeh, my cat loved it too. Now, after this book I take more seriously his chasings of seemingly inocous shadows on the walls - cats, you know, have an eye for bogles and such...
