An extrordinary novel

Book title: It
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
It - book cover picture

It was some months ago that i read "It". It stands in my mind as one of the few spiritual experiences I have ever had reading. What is extrordinary about this novel is not so much the scares King provides or the way he provides them, but the way he weaves realisitic, and at times poignant human drama in with a cracking good horror yarn. When, except in perhaps in Jaws and "The Exorcist", have you been able to relate so effortlessly to horror story characters? As for the movie, it does not live up to the novel (HOw could it possibly?) but it is underrated, with a good cast, and a wholehearted attempt to capture the subtext of King's work.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) - book cover picture

I read the latest Harry Potter book in a day or two, not able to put it down. I loved it!

There's not much I can add to the over one thousand reviews that have gone before mine. All I wanted to say was that if you're a fan of Harry Potter, you'll like this book too. It features a few cool plot twists and a whole lot of new situations for Harry and his friends to find themselves in.

I don't know how Ms. Rowling is going to wrap up the series, though, with just one more book. There are so many loose threads and unanswered questions that I think it'll take another book or two to finish the series! (Well, at least I can hope, can't it?)

I recommend this book!

Wise Child - book cover picture

I simply loved this book, and could not put it down until I had finished it! The characters, the setting, were all vibrant and real to life although the story took place long ago. It is not dated or stilted for today's reader. I am reading up on children's lit for the upcoming school year. I will be teaching fifth grade. The children will love this novel. Very creative, original, and a good tale of good vs. evil. I plan to read "Jupiter", and I will hope that Ms. Furlong adds more to this incredible series!

A Book Worth Reading Twice

Book title: Kept Boy

Kept Boy - book cover picture

A delightful book worth reading twice. Which I did in order to see the scenes from a different perspective. How cleverly Rodi manages to let us be misinformed. And what a surprise to discover the truth. I don't often stay up reading til 3 a.m. but I did with this one. There are numerous facical scenes that will have you not just giggling, but laughing outloud; and clever insight into characters one enjoys being with. I wish there was a sequel. Since there isn't I'll just have to read other Rodi books!

What an industrious, creative group of girls!

Kristy's Great Idea (The Baby-Sitter's Club #1) - book cover picture

Excellent view of the early teenage years! Some people claim that the books are "perfect good-girls" books, but apparently they'd only skimmed them. In the books, if you read well and see between the lines, the girls are realistic and deal with very real problems like divorce, overprotective parents, and real arguements. Even though they are close friends, they argue and get mad at each other from time to time. What this shows is not "easy" solutions, but that you can argue and get mad and not end the friendship. So many girls in real life fear showing anger for fear of having others not forgive them or being "bad" girls. In this book, the girls are human beings who make errors occassionally and take responsibility for them.

Effective C++ : 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs (3rd Edition) - book cover picture

I found this book to be of the most immense help in writing my final, end-of-degree, report. The styles of programming are excellent in their thought provoking evaluation of robust programming idioms. I would disagree with some of the others who have submitted reviews. This book is not intended to be an adjunct to the "learning" series of books that Scott has produced, more like where you should be taking the language once you have mastered the basics (and maybe the middles). My only criticism is not really of the book, but my own inexperience meant I did not fully understand the implications of some of the issues he describes. My frustration at this is why there is "shite" in the summary. This is something I hope I will correct by employing the techniques described as much as possible and would heartily recommend others to do the same!

A spectacular read

Waiting for the World to End - book cover picture

This book is spectacular and I should know I have read thousands of books in my seventeen years of life. I love how Ms. Hunter shows Tom Olsen's feelings and what he is thinking. Most books I have read haven't shown as much. I also love the fact that she wrote the book to show how life really can be, how it isn't perfect and some people don't have have all the answers to make their lives complete. I can't wait for another book by Ms. Hunter, this was very enjoyable to read and I am ordering a copy for myself so I can read it again and again. I will tell everyone about Waiting For the World to End.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) - book cover picture

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is one of the best books i have ever read. I really like these series of books because they take you to magical places and places you can only dream about. In my opinion Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the best book in the series. I think J.K. Rowling did a great job on writing this book. I would recomend this book to anyone who likes adventure and likes books about magical things!

What Oprah should have picked instead of Anna K.

Book title: Crystal Singer Trilogy
Rating: 5/5

Crystal Singer Trilogy - book cover picture

This is one of the best science fiction books i've read not just because of how realistic the characters are but because of the sexuality incorperated in this book. It's not the classic princess being chased by a knight but modern relationships built on lust and the need for companionship. Addmittedly, it is quite long but if you can get past the first 200 pages you'll love it. It took me about a week to get past 200 pages and then a day and night to finish it. The first book is the best while the second build on Killa's relationship with Lars. The last book doesn;t really continue the story but act more like an epilogue detailing Killa's loss of memory and the effects being a Crystal Singer has on her memory. It's quite sad at times but worth a read it you are in love with Killa as much as I am.
