Protecting the Gift - book cover picture

Gavin de Becker gives practical advice for protecting children from abduction and sexual abuse. For parents oblivious to the threats out there, it will open their eyes. For parents on the other end of the spectrum that worry every waking minute, it will reassure. The most important thing is does is provide REAL information that parents can use to protect children instead of feeling that their children's safety depends on luck. De Becker debunks several myths perpetuated by the popular media that can actually increase children's risk if believed. This is a must-read for parents and anyone else responsible for the safety of children.

The Stranger - book cover picture

Caroline B Cooneys book the stranger is my favourite book, once I read it I read all her other fantastic books. Its not really scary but its got a very good plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I spent a whole day of my holiday by the pool reading it. You get a really good feel for the characters and the ending was so sad but fantastic.

I strongly reccommend it for those fear street fans.

Island of the Sequined Love Nun - book cover picture

I got hooked on Christopher Moore novels about a year ago and have read all five of his books. By far "Love Nun" is his best. Moore's ability to write characters that jump from the page is amazing. From the fruit bat Roberto to the Ninja guards I found Moore's mind to capture all traits needed to earn a five star from me.The story is a modern day Moses tale, with a somewhat loser Moses, set in Micronesia. A story that dives into religion, politcs, the mob, history and the make-up industry. The story keep me intrigued and the laughs kept on coming. All of Moore's books are good, but if you have to pick one to read on a island, with a bunch of cannibals in the jungle pick this one.

History made interesting!

Book title: Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons: The Story of Phillis Wheatley

Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons: The Story of Phillis Wheatley - book cover picture

As an 8th grade US History teacher, I find this book a great way to teach about both an individual (Phillis Wheatley) and a specific time period. This biography is well-researched and makes learning about slavery and the revolutionary war a great addition to the history textbook. Phillis Wheatley endures great pain in her young life first being sold as a slave and then spending most of her life proving herself - simply because she is black. At first her goal is to please Nathanial Wheatley whom she adores, but later she comes to terms with learning about herself and where she fits in a world where being black affords very few opportunities. Along with a book of Phillis Wheatley's poems, this is a wonderful book to use in a US History classroom from a variety of perspectives - the slavery issue, African American history, and women's studies.

Hide Your Assets and Disappear: A Step-by-Step Guide to Vanishing Without a Trace - book cover picture

The author gives a wonderful overview of the topic of privacy. The book itself is an easy ready, and very funny. Even if one does not wish to lower their financial profile, I would recommend this book (just for the entertainment value). For those with fewer assets, or who wish to keep all of their activity within the U.S., I would also like to recommend "Bullet Proof Privacy" by Boston T Party.

An excellent reading of a funny book

Dave Barry in Cyberspace - book cover picture

This unabridged reading is carried off very well by Shadoe Stevens. He has a voice that is pleasant to listen to for 6 hours, and an understanding of Dave Barry's sense of humor. And Dave Barry has an understanding of the deep and underlying sense of how ridiculous computers and the internet really are.

If you are wondering how a web site address or fonts could be read aloud this recording will answer these burning questions. The only downside is that there is no insert or cheat sheet listing the web site. I guess that's what the book is for.

More gentle readers should be warned that there is an occasional reference to sex and sexual organs, but this is done as tastefully as one would expect from Mr. Barry.

here's where the series really picks up speed

The Drawing of the Three (The Dark Tower, Book 2) - book cover picture

Volume 2 is really King really starts to hit his stride. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed The Gunslinger, but The Drawing of the Three is where the story really starts to pick up and become the classic it has become. It is the story of Roland picking up two of his three companions, the heroin addict Eddie, and the crippled, multiple personality Oddetta/Detta. King's characters are vivid, and you have to wonder, where does he come up with this stuff (come on, lobstrosities...). Even if you weren't a big fan of volume one, you have to try volume two before you give up on your quest for the Tower. I think you'll find you'll want to continue on.

The best of the series of three, lots of suspense.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) - book cover picture

I think that the third book in the series (the other two being Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets)was the best of the three. J. K. Rowlings has this talent where she can just build on her previous books, and yet incessantly keep her readers hungry for more. I've never seen such thirst for reading- for goodness sakes, go to a bookstore and check out the stock! I was in one in Chicago today, and I saw three tall stacks of them reaching almost to the cieling. I also feel as though she has an extremely unique talent of finding the exact word for things. Whoever would've expected that 'Dumbledore' meant 'bumble bee' in old English, or 'Snape' was a city in Great Britian? She writes in the universal code of literary talent. I never would have expected the concepts and names of the ending, but they appeared, as I knew they would, while J. K. worked her magic once again.

Seduced by Moonlight (Meredith Gentry Novel) - book cover picture

Since the main character of the story is supposed to be in a race to become pregnant of course there is going to be alot of sex. A Fan of Hamilton's since the first Anita book, I'm glad that she has evolved in her writing seeing as how that it took her four books for Anita to finally have sex with Jean-Claude. I like the way she is handling her story lines if people have a problem with it they shouldn't read her work.
