Surely You're Joking, Mr Feynman!: Adventures of a Curious Character - book cover picture

"Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman" is a very interesting book. The many amusing and captivating stories in this autobiography keep you wanting to read more. I personally had a hard time putting this book down every night. Even though I started reading this for a physics project it turned out to be a very entertaining assignment due to the many diverse topics discussed in the book. The subjects discussed range from physics to biology and even touching on hypnosis in one chapter. The book starts out by telling how he acted growing up and then went on to tell about his college life and eventually went all the way to his adult life. This book is a humorous look at the world of science through the eyes of one of the greatest physicists of all time, Richard P. Feynman. It is a must read for anyone interested in any science related field.

PHANTOM - book cover picture

This is one of the most in depth stories about the infamous Phantom of the Opera that I have ever read. I really liked how Susan Kay answered a lot of questions like: Why did Erik's mother treat him horribly? What happened in Erik's previous life that made him act the way he did towards Christine? and the most intriguing, What happened between Christine and Erik during their lessons? A definite must read for those who enjoyed Gaston Leroux's novel, but still had unanswered questions.

At last, thoughtful writing with an engaging plot! And just when I thought Christian romance was doomed to rehash the same old story until the second coming. This book gripped my attention and I found myself involved with characters who are believable, multi-dimensional, and interesting! I love the inclusion of "misfit" people, unusual in the genre. These images were subtle but persistent in pointing to the theology of ourselves as maimed or deformed in our sinful nature. Bravo for a great read!

Hearts in Atlantis - book cover picture

As I have now read over 300 reviews regarding King's "Hearts in Atlantis", I understand what these critiques are all about. If you are anywhere from 20 - 40 years old, you are probably not aware of the important events that shaped my life. The Viet Nam War and the importance of my college years were so special to me and my friends...especially those who had to go and fight. I felt such a camaderie with Stephen King as I read Hearts of Atlantis. Yes, he grew up during my era. The 60's are a decade that will live forever in my friends who died in Viet Nam, and those who survived. We played Bridge. Just let those young people out there know that there is a world that Stephen King remembers...A world that I remember...A world that remembers the Viet Nam War...Hearts in Atlantis remembers ALL of those. King also remembers all of my thoughts.

Roberts Vs. Texaco: : A True Story Of Race And Corporate America - book cover picture

First of all, I would like to apoligize for Mr. Alan Wain.....he sounds very bitter. And another thing, Roberts did not get rich. Saying she was at the right place at the right time is by far the biggest BS ever, because she did not go into that position knowingly. But Texaco did hire her knowing that she would not get the promotions due her because of her race. For shame on what Texaco stood for! They had it coming to them big time. And I hope no one forgets about this case and the many horrific details that helped the plaintiffs victor!

The Force of Character : And the Lasting Life - book cover picture

I've read much of what Hillman has written and his thinking has influenced my own book, "Gideon McGee's Dream." In Force of Character he again makes me see life in such broader strokes than that painted by the dominant idea of our Age; that is that we are nothing more than a cosmic coincidence. For those with the courage to take this book to heart, and it does take courage, it can be a transformative experience.

Sensational storytelling . . . and from a 21 year old ???!!!

The Drowning People - book cover picture

If for no other reason than the obvious difference of opinion about this book . . . it should be a "must read". It certainly can't help but intrigue. Why the confusion ? Why the ratings from 1 - 5 stars ? What's going on here ?Well, for me, it is simple . . . the confusion rests in the fact that the book is so well written with such good insight into life's vaguaries and the way little events affect people's lives that it's almost impossible to understand how a "kid" of 21 could have put it together. The story alone is worth the time, but the insight is just fabulous ! Forget the synical, over intellectualtized reviews that appear before this one. THIS IS THE REAL THING ! I can't wait for this "kids" next one !

Best book on the history of post-Manifesto Mormonism

Mormonism in Transition: A History of the Latter-Day Saints, 1890-1930 - book cover picture

How does a religious movement transform itself from a regional subculture nestled in the Rocky Mountains to an international Christian denomination? The answer is contained in this book. When this work was first published, the history of post-Manifesto Mormonism was terra incognita. Now, almost 20 years after its initial release, this is still the best historical overview of Mormonism in the early 20th century, and a Mormon history classic. If you want to know how the religion of polygamy and the Mountain Meadows massacre became the conservative, all-American LDS church of today, start right here. The chapters on politics and the bureaucratization and standardization of church polity and practice are particularly indispensable. What can I say? This is a masterpiece!

Good scholarship work

Language, Elites, and the State - book cover picture

Language excerpts a special role in culture as well as in people's identity. Those of us who have been obligated to learn another language have also experience the importance that language plays on culture by the way that we were accepted in society during the learning stages. Also by the continuing way that we are treated no matter how highly educated we can be. This book examines the relation of language, nationalism and state, using the examples of Quebec and Puerto Rico. This is an excellent work that I really recommend. This book is not only for those interested in the Quebec or Puerto Rico situation but those who are in general interested in the relation within language, elite's and state. I personally congratulate Mr. Barreto for condensing so much information in a small book. This is something that not all book writers have the skill to do.
