Compiler Construction: Principles and Practice - book cover picture

This is an excellent basic book on compilers. Its strength is its strong practical approach combined with using YACC/LEX technology. It hand holds you through the development of a simple compiler. If I wanted to learn about compilers I would read this first. Its weakness is it is too narrow. There are plenty of features of languages that are not addressed but in passing. Its goal is to get a compiler built. For a compilers 101 class there is no better book.

Golden Apples of the Sun and Other Stories - book cover picture

I'll admit I haven't finished this book but what I've read has taken my breath away. The writing is classic Bradbury, poetic and enticing. The stories themselves surprised me a little since I don't think I'd yet read a Bradbury story that wasn't science fiction or fantasy. "The Fruit at the bottom of the bowel" is one of these and is fantastic. Of course, it seems to me that Bradbury's preoccupation has always been with people rather than magic or technology. Thus it makes sense that his "realistic" fiction would be just as effective as his other. In any case, Bradbury is a masterful storyteller and anyone would deprive themselves if they didn't read his work, including this collection.

Simply extraordinary

Mendel's Dwarf - book cover picture

An author less gifted than Simon Mawer might have done the obvious - that is, show us a character with physical deformities who has, within, a great soul. Mawer has succeeded at much more complex task: he has created for us a flawed, driven, bitter, complicated, difficult dwarf. This extraordinary book is worth reading simply for the depth of this characterization - not to mention the book's other virtues. The book's only dramatic flaw may be the ending, which is not so much implausible or inconsistent as it is just a little too unexpected -- for the sake of the book's shape, one wishes we had been given more background on Hugh so that his final actions would fit better with the rest of the book. But that would have been difficult, given the position of the narrator. In any case, beware: the ending will break your heart.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) - book cover picture

Harry Potter in the Half-Blood Prince is by far the most exciting and suspensful book yet. The first half of the book is similar in style to books 1-3 in it's wit, humor, and an overall happier feeling than book 5. The second half dares to tread in territory never tread in any book before. Plot twists in almost every chapter reveal facts that have long been speculated, but have always been approached with caution for fear of being extremely crazy. J.K. Rowling has proved once again that she can change the entire course of the book in one sentence yet still keep us enraptured and astounded at the intricate way this book has been written. I am deeply amazed at this book, surely the most emotional, tear-jerking, powerful fiction story ever made.

One of the best books I've ever read. Campbell's insights and interpretations supercede religious doctrines, while fully respecting them. The conversational style of the book makes it a quick read. Bill Moyers' role should not be overlooked. His preparation was impeccable. A great follow-up Campbell book might be "Transformations of Myth Through Time," (ISBN 0-06-096463-4) consisting of 13 lectures. Again, Campbell brings out the similarities among cultures brilliantly and positively.

The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, Book 1) - book cover picture

Robert Jordan writes a very complex and in depth novel about characters in a world very different from ours. The entire plot revolves around vivid religious aspects of society, the devil, magic, and the eternal war between light and darkness. Lots of symbolism. "The Eye of the World" is the first book in a never ending series. The seventh novel having just been released in the winter of '98, readers have a long wait before the eighth book. If you like to live in another world when you read, this is the perfect series to begin reading.

A Comforting Read in Troubled Times

Book title: The Persian Pickle Club

The Persian Pickle Club - book cover picture

I happened to being reading this book during the time of the WTC disaster. With the whole world rocking around us, I found such comfort and peace cuddling up each night and soaking up the sensations of Queenie's afternoon quilting sessions. Through the dark days of the depression, these strong women found comfort through routine, beauty in simplicity and inner peace from the rhymthic flow of their needles through the fabric. The fact that a mystery becomes a part of all of this only enhances the story. I guess one of the nicest things about the story is that it reminds us that we too need to pick up the threads of our lives in difficult times and that the mundane activities of daily living are to be all the more appreciated due to the uncertainties of life. The bleak atmosphere of the depression comes alive with the colorful personalities that the author has created.

A very readable view of logical positivism

Book title: Language, Truth and Logic
Rating: 5/5

Language, Truth and Logic - book cover picture

Ayer wrote this back in 1935, but it remains a very readable book. Ayer covers a lot of familiar ground (e.g., Hume, Locke, etc), and argues for philosophers to concentrate on critical studies, rather than speculative metaphysics. He presents several simple, straightforward arguments for the rejection of metaphysics, labeling it 'nonsensical.' Ayer acknowledges the emotional content of speculative metaphysics, but argues that philosophers should not get caught up in arguing over semantically non-sensical propositions which are neither verifiable nor falsifiable. He spends a good deal of time discussing how grammar can deceive us, and deals with the usual existence-as-predicate and 'demonstrative symbols' arguments, demonstrating how easily we construct non-sensical statements without seeing that they are non-sensical. This is an extremely well-written classic. Anyone with an interest in philosophy should definitely read this at least once.
