The Mark of the Crown (Star Wars: Jedi Apprentice, Book 4) - book cover picture

The Mark of the crown is one of my top five favorites. It starts when the rulers of planet of Gala decide to change its goverment. The queen is dying and her son is angry that she shifted the monarch to a republic. So the son runs for one of the canidates. The Jedi, (Qui-gon and his apprentice Obi-wan,) are there to make the elections go smoothly, but the Jedi fear that there is some sort of connection between the hill people who vowed never to come to the capital of Gala and their leader, Elan, might be the true heir to the throne.

It's a good thing that there are so many different tastes among readers. Otherwise, a lot fewer people could make a living as authors. As is the case with most novels, this one evoked a broad spectrum of response. Add me to the list of rave reviews. I was sucked in from the very beginning and could hardly read fast enough to find out how it all turned out. If you liked Lost Boys like I did, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one too. If not, skip it.

String Theory, Vol. 2 : Superstring Theory and Beyond (Cambridge - book cover picture

Polchinski's book on string theory is a very well written book about the subject. Also, the problems given in the book are valuable for a further understanding. Using it together with the book by Green, Schwarz, Witten one will afterwards have indeed little problems understanding the papers on this subject. However one caveat: if one reads this book, he or she shoudl be always aware that this topic is still deeply a research subject and by no means settled like mechanics. If this is always kept in mind, then this book is of considerable help in understanding one of the current frontiers of physics.

This book has become my solemate. The thoughts and experiences of the author made the miriad of emotions my wife and I experienced easier to understand. The loss of our 11 year old daughter will be something we never "get over", this book reaffirms that moving on is not the same as letting go. I would recommend this book to anyone who has,and I quote "stared at hell and survived".

Great, insightful read

Book title: Galileo, Science and the Church (Ann Arbor Paperbacks)
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Galileo, Science and the Church (Ann Arbor Paperbacks) - book cover picture

This is a brief, well balanced account of the conflict between Galileo and the Church. It opens with an insightful look at the world view and astronomy of the late 1500's, including a detailed look at the role of Scripture in these views. This is followed with a thorough description of Galileo's life and how his conflict with the church unfolded. The final chapter is a fascinating overview of the relationships between faith, science and philosophy since Galileo's time. It's not overly difficult reading, though it deals with science, theology and philosophy. The book is a fair account, looking at the strengths and weaknesses of Galileo and some Church officials in how they approached the issues. It also critiques some long held cultural assumptions about the causes, events and meaning of this case (ex: Galileo was never tortured; some lower Church officials who disliked Galileo gave the Pope misleading reports, etc). Definitely worth reading!!

One of the best cognitive books I've ever read

Book title: Assessment of Cognitive Processes: The PASS Theory of Intelligence

Assessment of Cognitive Processes: The PASS Theory of Intelligence - book cover picture

A must for those who are familiar with Luria's works, Assessment of Cognitive Processes is a wonderful book, explaining the best intelligence theory to date: the PASS theory of intelligence. Focusing more on abilities and not in capacities or mere base of knowledge, the PASS stands for Planning, Attention, Simultaneous and Successive processes. I use a lot this theory in conceptualizing my cognitive and neurocognitive cases. The PASS Remedial Pogram (PREP) who stand for PASS Reading Enhancement Program is very useful for children with reading disorders, training them to develop Succesive and Simultaneous strategies. A wonderful addition to the field. If you are a cognitive psychologist or a school psychologist and do a lot of work with children this is the right book for and introduction to remedial instruction

Book title: False Memory

False Memory - book cover picture

This was the first Koontz book I read, and what an introduction to his world this was for me! By simply reading the synopsis of this novel, I couldn't tell what it was about. I found the beginning a little slow, but, in the usual Koontz manner, it all came together by the middle or last third of the story. I loved the rich metaphors, the characters, the plot, and the way Koontz keeps you glued to the pages. I just had to keep reading to find out more.
I highly recommend this novel. I also strongly suggest the audio tapes, which give you an even better sense of the rich characters.

Dumped: A Survival Guide for the Woman Who's Been Left by the Man She Loved - book cover picture

This book is probably the best self-help text available on this topic & applicable to anyone going through this mess called "getting dumped" - irregardless of even sexual orientation (my dumper was a woman). It really helped a LOT and my copy is dogeared, tearstained, in my purse to stay along with my lipstick & brush, well loved and STILL used. Do NOT miss this book! It has been INVALUABLE in my healing process.

Hacker's Guide to Visual FoxPro(R) 3.0 - book cover picture

FoxPro is both wonderfully powerful and maddeningly quirky, as is well documented in this excellent volume. Having used FoxPro to develop and support commercial software products for many years, I have a large library of FoxPro books, and this one is by far the best. It is exhaustive in its coverage of concepts, features, bugs, and documentation errors, and includes many excellent examples. If you are serious about FoxPro, buy it.

Great examination of conservation issues in Africa.

The Myth of Wild Africa: Conversation Without Illusion - book cover picture

A great book for anyone interested in conservation in Africa. This is not, however, a book that promotes saving wildlife at all costs but instead looks at the issues surrounding conservation and the difficult issues that are involved in it. The book challenges the western-driven modes of conservation that have been in place for the past century. A must for anyone going on safari or anyone that works in the field of conservation.
