I have read other reviews of this book on, and these people don't know what they are talking about! No book is perfect, but I think this book was better than alot of Koontz's others. I agree that the serial killer sub-plot was underdeveloped, but it was good, and the overall character development was good. I loved the agony of the Russian sub commander and his decision to buck the system, and the tension over the failed rescue attempts was great! I don't normally read that fast, but I finished this one in about 4 hours because I couldn't make myself put it down. Anyone who likes a thriller must read this book.

If you like to read to your children, you'll love this book.

Ghost Canoe - book cover picture

A chapter a night, that's all it takes. With the punch of London's "White Fang" or Gary Paulsen's "Winterdance", Hobbs' "Ghost Canoe" has captured the imaginations of my seven and nine year-old children. The historical and cultural lessons are a bonus for the kids (and me) in this fast-paced action adventure. Indians, war canoes, whales, robbers, shipwrecks, lighthouses and more, it's all stuff kids and their Dad's will love. Having grown up in the Northwest and being familiar with many of the locations, this book was especially fun for me.

How the Immune System Works takes a delightfully new approach to a difficult subject. Dr. Sompayrac tells the story of how the immune system works with vivid imagery that makes learning immunology as easy as reading your favorite novel. I would recommend this to anyone needing an understanding of this subject whether you are a "beginner" or just need a refresher. A must read for any student of Immunology!

Possibly the best of the Bloom County collections.

Bloom County Babylon : Five Years of Basic Naughtiness (Bloom County) - book cover picture

This book is an overview of the first five years of the strip, ranging from the early strips in which the focus is mostly on Milo, through the introductions of Binkley, Bobbi, Cutter John, Opus, Oliver Wendell Jones, Steve Dallas, and finally, Bill The Cat. Personally, I've always had a preference for the early, pre-Bill The Cat strips; I could deal with the silliness inherent in Opus and Oliver's anthropomorphic computer, but Bill just seemed one step over the line. But I know that he's very popular, and he's here, too. There are a few strips here that were reprinted from the previous three collections, but most of this material is NOT reprints. Of course, much of the humor will be completely incomprehensible to anyone who wasn't politically aware during the '80s, but I suspect that even for such a (hopefully) young person, there's plenty here to enjoy.

Case Closed : Lee Harvey Oswald and the Assassination of JFK - book cover picture

A tremendous piece of writing about the most stunning event in our nation's recent history, this book puts to rest the paranoia-driven theories that continue to exist. Posner won't convince everyone out there--see the few eccentrics who give this book a low rating and their comments to see why--but it is nice to see some common sense and integrity brought to the investigation of JFK's shooting. This is a must read!!!

Uncommon Grounds : The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World - book cover picture

This informative book is truly a joy to read, and any coffee drinker (serious coffee drinker, anyways) would benefit from this work. It offers an enlightening insight into the incredible coffee economy and outlines the disproportionate balance of profit that is a result from this inconspicuous plant. Not focused simply on the drink itself, Pendergrast writes of those this commodity impacts. Look for more than amusing tales of the coffee world and trite chapters on how to best brew the beans; this book is for those who are seriously interested in their favorite drink or who are curious about the history of a world commodity that has shaped both our economic and natural environment.

A Word Child - book cover picture

I recently re-read "A Word Child" and was completely charmed by it. I hardly know where to begin listing its merits. Firstly it is good and true and seeks to make us better people in a very practical way. Too earnest for the 2000s? We shall see. Secondly it is beautiful and mystical and full of the poetry of human action. Thirdly it is humble and funny and messy and REAL. Reading Iris Murdoch is like reading no other modern author: how clear and generous her prose style is, how non-"tricksy". She was a great writer about London too: why do we forget this? I think her reputation is entirely secure as the greatest English novelist of her age and she will be read and loved by readers when many other flashier talents are long forgotton.

Jews and Blacks need to Work Together

Losing the Race: Self-Sabotage in Black America - book cover picture

Losing the Race has really done its homework. Outside the politically correct filters that cloud discussions of ethnicity, McWhorter has taken an objective view of his own people and wants things to improve. Losing The Race is the perfect companion book to the recent release of The Jewish Phenomenon- the 7 Keys to the Enduring Wealth of a People. It is the flipside of the African-American story where centuries of discrimination and seclusion has yielded quite a different result, ranging far beyond success measured in dollars but also in contributions made in many fields and community development. With the selection of Senator Lieberman, Jews are pointing the way for African-Americans, if they choose to follow the 7 principles as outlined by the Jewish Phenomenon. Losing the Race tells it like it is and should not be dismissed, it should be studied. There is no genetic divide between the races, it is a matter of positive nurturing and development.

The Complete Nonsense - book cover picture

Edward Lear's limmericks, humorous poems and other nonsensical endeavours all collected into one volume. This book never fails to bring a smile on my face, even though I've quite outgrown its designated age group. I think Lear's work can appeal to anyone with a wry view of the world and an affinity for the mildly grotesque (whatever that means). Need I also mention the endearing sketches which decorate the book and Holbrook's most helpful introduction? In short, this is the ideal present for yourself or your loved ones.

The Endless Steppe : Growing Up in Siberia - book cover picture

I first read this book during the sixth grade. It was key to my understanding of history and sparked the beginnings of my love to learn about other cultures. I re-read again-at 23-after a month long trip to Siberia's Lake Baikal. It was still fascinating. This book is perfect for young readers-illustrating the differences in culture, examining part of history, and showing us that there are "real" young females to look up to. I am very grateful to my sixth grade teacher, Nathan Cattell, for opening my mind to this piece of literature.
