Homeless Bird - book cover picture

Homeless Bird, by Gloria Whelan, is about a thirteen-year-old girl, Koly, growing up in India. In the custom of her culture, a marriage is arranged for her. Her husband ends up being a sickly young boy, no older than herself, whose parents married off their son so that the wedding dowry would pay for a trip to the holy Ganges River. This dowry did not save him, and the now-widowed Koly was forced to live with this strange family.Homeless Bird tells of how Koly took control of her life, even though she was very young. She had lost all that was familiar to her, yet she managed to pull through difficult times alone. Koly's independence and strength is an inspiration to anyone, and I reccomend it to anyone looking to see just how lucky we are.

Satisfying on several levels

A Monstrous Regiment of Women - book cover picture

I was impressed again with the talent of Laurie R. King. There are several levels of review in this book. First the coming of age of an intelligent and brave young women. Someone who is not afraid to be honest with herself. Second, a love story between equals . Two people that respect each other and themselves. Third, a mystery surrounding a women that could be incredibly evil or a saint. Fourth, the relationship between God and women and the relationship between God, man and woman. Fifth, what is the truth about the Bible's interpretation. All these work together to enliven the mind and romance the heart.

A Worthy Read

Book title: Grant Speaks
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Grant Speaks - book cover picture

This is a great book about the individuals that most have known only through their actions in the Civil War. If you want a history of the Civil War or Ulysses S. Grant, this is not the book to read. While it follows the line of Grant's life it is NOT history and it would be hard to confuse it as such. But If you have ever wondered, like I have, what General Grant or General Lee or President Lincoln might have been like, then "Grant Speaks" is for you. I must say that I disagree with those who say that this book defames the memory of Grant, it never claims to be anything but historical fiction. Ehrlich is a talented writer who obviously puts much effort into his work, and people are smart enough not to fall into a trap of believing the fanciful plot twists of this book, but they will take away the important idea that Grant was a real human being.

Terrific Treatise on Boston's Best

Book title: The Red Sox Reader
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Red Sox Reader - book cover picture

Red Sox Reader is a wonderful collaboration of the best articles written on the Sox. It includes stories from the most significant events in Sox history, ranging the Babe's move to the Yanks to the 1986 Series. It also includes an interview with Bill Lee, a couple of articles by the editor (who was an English teacher in my hometown for years), and perhaps the greatest article on a Boston event - "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu" by John Updike. I would recommend this book to any Boston fan who appreciates good writing.

My son (9 years old) could not put this book down!

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2) - book cover picture

My son read the first two books in this series in less than a month and is ANXIOUSLY awaiting the 3rd in the series. I am THRILLED that he is reading for pleasure instead of because he "has" to. The only other book he has ever felt this way about was James and the Giant Peach. I can only pray that Harry Potter will live on and on and on -- until my son is 18 or so anyway!!! Thank you Ms. Rowling!

The Chrysalids - book cover picture

I had to read this book for grade 10 english because my teacher deemed A Clockwork Orange as "a useless book". However, when i picked up The Chrysalids, i realized that it was really good. It has all the elements of a great story: characters you can relate to, an intriguing plot line and decent prose. I also like the fact that it takes place in a post apocalyptic society (not as good as A Canticle for Leibowitz, but still good). If your looking for good sci-fi, pick up this book.

A Great American Novel

Once an Eagle - book cover picture

I picked this book up at the airport to kill some hours in the air. The story wonderfully woven and vibrantly told. For once an author has accurately captured why so many soldiers hate war while they dedicate their lives to fighting one. It is an excellent read and just as relevent to today's readers as it was when it was originally released in 1968. Fortunately today's readers lose out on some of the irony in the story now that we are not in the Viet Nam war.

Best whaling documentary since Moby Dick!

In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex - book cover picture

I always thought Moby Dick was it...a profound historical account of the whaling industry before the 1900's. Kids struggled thrugh it as Melville recounted the tale, yet the wade was painful to a point. The Essex adventure, though, while providing a fairly perfect account of the industry, doesn't have to be digested, analyzed, or dissected much to get inside the characters or get a solid, historical feel for the whaling industry and the Nantucket lifestyle. Thoroughly enjoyable and painlessly educational.

Christine rules!

Book title: Christine
Rating: 5/5

Christine - book cover picture

This is one of my favorite King books. The characters are well developed and memorable, the high school setting is cool, and the plot is imaginative and moves with good pace. I especially dig the high school setting, since it makes for such a great place for different personalities to collide in a way with which every former high school student can relate. Arnie, the main character, is the classic loser-nerd-loner guy who falls in love with one bad car, Christine, that figures to change his life with a vengeance. His buddy, his girlfriend, the high school dirtbag enemies, and the old guy who owns the garage are all cool cats that King does a great job of bringing to life. And only the wild genius of King can inject human qualities, like jealousy and anger, into Christine in such a cool way. This is King at his best. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

An excellent introduction to Strategic Management

Exploring Corporate Strategy : Text Only (5th Edition) - book cover picture

This is one of my favourite strategy texts. At first, I found this book fairly heavy reading. However, once I got deeper into the subject, I found it very useful (especially when I was studying for an MBA). I believe that the text provides the reader with a good grounding on strategic principles on which to build more specialist knowledge of the subject. The text covers all the key steps of strategy development including analysis, selection and implementation. For each step, Johnson and Scholes also provides a number of techniques (including, PEST analysis, Porter's Diamond, Porter's Five Forces, Value Chain analysis, SWOT, Cultural Web, etc).
