Lost in a Good Book (Thursday Next Novels (Penguin Books)) - book cover picture

Fans of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett in particular will love Jasper Fforde (doesn't that name sound as though it came right our of Hitchhiker's Guide?) and his extremely original heroine, Thursday Next. This is science fiction for the non-scientific fan of classic literature. If you've ever wanted to vacation IN a good book instead of WITH one, you'll enjoy this series. BTW, for hard-core Thursday Next fans who can't wait till 2004 for The Well of Lost Plots, the next book in the series, it's available NOW through Amazon's UK website!

Follow the Stars Home - book cover picture

I have read stories of people turning a truly bad life situation into an inspiration for us all, but Luanne Rice has accomplished the ultimate with this book. This was a first Rice book for me, but I am here to purchase more. Her ability to weave the lives of her various characters and mingle their individual personalities, weaknesses, and most of all strengths is struly inspiring. Her love for her disabled child, and I question that word disabled when it comes to Julia, and her ability to include another "well in body, not spirit in child" into her life made me reevaluate what it means to be a mother. Dianne is the epitome of what I consider the word mother and also daughter to mean. Alan was what all fathers should be defined as. Rice is a genius with story and words.

The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing (Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing) - book cover picture

As a rule I don't get excited about stock books anymore, but this one broke the rule. Not since first reading Graham have I felt so taken by the hand and shown how the market really works. Kelly is a masterful writer, moving easily from funny examples to hard-edged streetsmarts. The Mister Magazine story made all the sense in the world without getting boring or patronizing like the dummies and idiots books. If you don't know what the Mister Magazine story is, don't worry, you will after reading the book.

Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference (2nd Edition) - book cover picture

Even though this book is a bit out of date, the information presented is still of great value to any web developer who knows how HTML, CSS, and JavaScript work. The book's first few chapters describe how to use DHTML, adding style sheets, scripting events, and also discusses different browser compatibility issues. However, the book's real value is in the Reference section, which takes up most of the book. Extensive reference chapters on HTML, DOM, Style Sheet Atributes, JavaScript information are where this book's real value lies. While definitely not a book for beginners, it is most likely the best DHTML reference book available.

Tevis presents an interesting view of the world

The Man Who Fell to Earth (Del Rey Impact) - book cover picture

If it's science fiction you want then this definitely isn't for you. It's more of a spiritual journey where anyone who has ever been a stranger in a new land can relate to the trials of an individual who struggles to fit in. It shows how cruel we can be when we don't understand (or don't want to understand) how insignificant we really are. Although T.C. Newton succumbs to the pressures from both within and without, the accomplishment is in the journey itself. Very moving and extremely well written. For lack of a better word, and at risk of being cliche, a very "dark" and haunting display of imagery.

Balanced Scorecard Step-by-Step: Maximizing Performance and Maintaining Results - book cover picture

If you are interested in the experience of companies that implemented the BSC, read the Kaplan and Norton books. Now if you want to learn HOW TO actually DO IT then this book is for you. Instead of selling the reader on the BSC concept Paul Niven teaches the BSC step by step - just like the book title says. I particularly liked Chapter 5 - commonly used measures from each of the BSC perspectives. This is a good book to have if you are implementing or planning to implement the BSC.

A chilling autobiography

Book title: When Broken Glass Floats: Growing Up Under the Khmer Rouge

When Broken Glass Floats: Growing Up Under the Khmer Rouge - book cover picture

I read this book immediately after I finished "First They Killed My Father." Both are autobiographies by young women who were children at the time of the Khmer Rouge's rule of Cambodia. Rather than being redundant, I found that this book complemented the other. Both girls were daughters of relatively privileged families who were part of the forced evacuation of Phnom Phen. The author of this one, Ms. Him, was a few years older, and this slight age difference provides some different perspective. In addition, Ms. Him's family evacuated in a different geographical direction, which also affected her family's displacement over those years. The author shows how, as a child, she demonstrated incredible determination and courage in the face of the most horrendous conditions imaginable -- she even escapes one work camp as she was near death from dysentary. This book provides another necessary and compelling autobiography of a horrible time in history.

Freakonomics : A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything - book cover picture

I can provide no higher praise. It's fabulous, and a great read for economists and non-economists.

(N.B. to non-economists. The title might be good for selling books, but don't let it imply to you that the field of economics generally is *not* about the sorts of issues that the book covers. This is far from being true, as suggested by the authors' copious references to others' work. If you like this book, chances are you like economics more generally but have not realized it yet...)
