Holes (Readers Circle) - book cover picture

Imagine the torture of digging just plain old five foot deep and wide holes every single day in the middle of a dried out lake. Stanley Yelnats chose this punishment over jail, but while he's doing this he's thinking jail might have have been the better option. After the Camp Warden gets excited over a small lipstick cap he finds, he realizes that the counceler's of Camp Green Lake are after something specific, the holes are not just to build their character. They are trying to find something important. And he is determined to find it before they do. He and his quiet friend Zero go off on an intruiging adventure, which teaches you the true meaning of friendship and determination. The story is as fascinating and detailed as the plot itself. With realistic characters and a strange and thick backround this book will keep you reading page after page.

The War of the Worlds (Bantam Classics) - book cover picture

H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds is a great book for people who like science fiction. The book begins with puny-looking and repulsive Martian invaders, but quickly turns into a hopeless battle for the humans. With a few twists and turns, for better or for worse, the Martians invasion is cut short, but not by the humans. If you like books about alien invasions, I strongly recommend you read The War of the Worlds.

North of Nowhere : An Alex McKnight Novel (Alex McKnight Mysteries (Hardcover)) - book cover picture

but apparently not wiser. You'd think Alex McKnight learned his lesson about not sticking his nose where it does not fully belong... but no, he likes to revisit the lessons the hard way.A fourth installment in Alex McKnight series and they keep on getting better. Steve Hamilton provides you with just the right amount of background information to gently lead you into the story - and I will not go into the story details, for obvious reasons.Funny, fast paced, with some good twists and turns, North of Nowhere is another page turner. Don't skip it.

I loved it.

Wind, Sand and Stars - book cover picture

It was sometimes slow, sometimes pretentious and not a very long book at all. I don't really know what I liked about it...
It's just one of those warm fuzzy feeling books i guess.
A view of the world from an author who loved life and felt pity for those who couldn't. He was a good story teller. He had a childish romantic view of the world which is part of the charm.
I think if you can't identify with him, then you won't like the story.

Hannibal - book cover picture

I was both repulsed and horrified by this book. Harris manages to completely destroy the only sympathetic character, which of course was Starling, and by the finale all we are left with is monsters. I have read it once, I am not glad to have read it, and I never intend to read it again. But despite- no, because of all that, the author did what he had intended, to examine the minds of killers and set the moralities we cherish on their ears. Hannibal is not a comfortable read, and I would not reccomend it to anyone with a weak stomach, but in its own way, it is a work of art.

DeMark On Day Trading Options - book cover picture

I am amazed that some people possess insights that the average person cannot approach to emulate. I guess the Almighty gives each of talents and it is our repsonsibility to tap into the talents he bestows. Nothing demonstrates this more than this book and the author. I would bet from reading this book three times over that he is a one dimensional obsessive compulsive individual who is not content to learn from others but demands to solve his own puzzles. The demons within this person serve to benefit us who have other lives other than the markets. I am not complaining since someone must do the work and for me to reap the rewards of this work is a true benefit of this person's labors.

Queen of the Darkness: The Black Jewels Trilogy 3 (Archive) - book cover picture

I waited many months for this book to come out and when it finaly did I was not disapointed. Anne Bishop has written another great book that kept me up all night reading. It was a great ending for the trilogy and I thought this book was just as good as the first two. The characters are easy to love and some were easy to hate and the plot keeps the reader wanting more. Now that I am finished with this trilogy I will not hesitate to reread it whenever I miss the characters.

Really makes you think

Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics - book cover picture

This book explains the theoretical concepts of electricity and electronics very well. The quizzes really make you think, but they're open-book. The tests and the final exam are, as the author promises, easier, but they're closed-book. I've never seen a book that has so many well-written practice questions. I would like to see more material on advanced systems concepts and aerospace applications, but maybe that is asking too much for an introductory text (and it reflects my own bias!). I have recommended this book to several of my colleagues.

Very Good Account

In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex - book cover picture

Very good and apparently well researched account of the tragedy of the Whaleship Essex which was stove in and sunk by a whale, a rare event. Begins with a good background of the old whaling industry in New England, particularly Nantucket, and follows with the tragic voyage of the Essex. Detailed description of the ordeal and horrors endured by the 20 men who were in 3 small boats on the open ocean for over 90 days. Good descriptions of the Captain, First Mate, and others, and well illustrated with drawings and photographs. Once started, I found the book hard to put down.

A good account

One L : The Turbulent True Story of a First Year at Harvard Law School - book cover picture

While I am not attending Harvard Law School, I looked to this book for a few reasons.
1) For an account of a first year in law school
2) For an account of the emotions and atmosphere
3) For any insight as to the workings of law schools

I found satisfaction in all that I was looking for in this book. It is always good to read historical accounts even if they don't totally apply to the modern law school. This is one of the few, if not only, book that I know of that is about the first year of law school much less from an active law student.
