Orwell is a great author who gets his points across very clearly. He talks about the working class, miners especially, of Northern England, and how Socialism will help them. I can't imagine that many people think of the working class, and their hardships; and if they do, they don't _really_ pay attention to the details of their lives. Orwell does, and he talks about it in a way that you almost convert to Socialism--until he starts criticizing Socialism and Socialists. It makes you wonder why he was a Socialist at all.

The Beautiful Game captures the essence of youth soccer

The Beautiful Game: : Sixteen Girls And The Soccer Season That Changed Everything - book cover picture

Jonathan Littman's The Beautiful Game is a wonderful book about a season inside a high-level girls' soccer team. His time spent with the team allows him to give the reader a very well-rounded view of the players, what motivates them (or doesn't) and how they react to and deal with the pressure involved in dedicating themselves to their team and, ultimately, each other. This book is a must-read for not just fans of youth sports and soccer, but anyone who's ever had any interest in getting some insight into today's youth. I couldn't reccomend it any more strongly!

Enthralling. One of the best books I've read.

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1) - book cover picture

I was very impressed by A Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire, Vol 1). I originally read it because I was given a mini book - an excerpt from this book - with the purchase of another title at my local bookstore. For all true lovers of Fantasy Fiction, this is a feast. The intricacies of the interwoven plot lines astounds me. Each of the characters exhibits the nuance and attention to detail that really brings out their humanity to me. I empathise with every one of them. It's a truly original masterpiece. I've been in suspense since I finished it, about 12 months ago, and I can't wait to read the next one!Do yourself a favour and read it - NOW!

Home Design from the Inside Out: Feng Shui, Color Therapy, and Self-Awareness - book cover picture

I bought this book at a time I was interest in Feng Shui and found out that it really isn't about that afterall - and only one chapter is devoted to that falsehood (as she interprets it - I do believe in the true Chineese Feng Shui - not new age). The rest of the book is very informative for we decorators who believe that you should decorate your home for yourself and its occupants - not for the neighbor. One must be true to oneself and that is what Lennon hopes you aspire too. Peace!

Heroism is the alternative to ego-drama

Book title: Lord Jim

Lord Jim - book cover picture

Conrad is like a Zen Master, and while this book is not the shortest introduction to his beliefs, it is one of the most comprehensive. He shows the world as it must be to an idealist, as a sea of competing thoughts, with the highest being the heroic and self-negating that is also world-embracing. He shows how human beings suffer for not having this, and how they rise in their own estimation and thus are capable of great deeds when they have it. A good read for an airplane or other long ordeal, this book seems like rambling Victorian trash until you notice its multilayered symbolism.

So Entertaining

Seabiscuit: An American Legend - book cover picture

This book is wonderful. Although the movie is great, it still does no justice for this book. There are so many other stories and characters that the movie just does not cover. This is the kind of book that because it is so unbelievable and true at the same time, it is nearly impossible to put down. I would've been happy with about 200 more pages. Fantastic read. If you read the book first, it will ruin the movie for you but the book is so much better anyway, you don't need to see the movie.

A Unique Perspective on World War II

Book title: The Polish Officer
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Polish Officer - book cover picture

"The Polish Officer" offers American readers a new slant on World War II: the perspective of life inside occupied Europe, with no American characters coming to the rescue. Instead, "The Polish Officer" is peopled by displaced persons, former military officers, and bandits, all drawn into a seemingly hopeless resistance to the occupying Nazi and Soviet forces in Poland, Russia, and France. That Furst is able to create a story from this world that is appealing to American readers speaks to his prowess as a writer. This is a beautifully-written book, although a bit weak on plot. However, since the book ends early in the war, it left me wondering how the central character made out.

Absolutely Inspirational

A Legacy of Arctic Art - book cover picture

I came across this book by accident, and what a happy accident! I read it like a novel that I couldn't put down. If you are interested in the subject of native art, Alaska, or are just fascinated with cultural histories in general, you will enjoy this book. It is informative, educational, and feeds the passion for the simple beauty that exists in certain parts of the world like the Alaskan territories. In addition it has inspired and informed me to better plan my future trips to the area. Ray is real, and the book is beautiful with many pictures and descriptions of interesting facts and places. If you are planning a trip to Alaska, this is a book to have. Also described in her book is how to tell the difference between real and fraudulent art. If you plan to collect any pieces, this knowledge would be invaluable. This is one to keep.

History--By One Who Lived It and Payed Attention

Book title: Wolf Willow
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Wolf Willow - book cover picture

Wallace Stegner spent a large part of his childhood on nearly the last terrestrial frontier in Continental North America, a harsh corner of southwestern Sasakatchewan. Wolf Willow tells the story of that experience, other great stories about the history and culture of the region, and Stegner's views on going back to the town he grew up in. In reading Wolf Willow, you begin to realize the depth of the loss we've suffered as Western humanity has moved almost exclusively into homogenized, plasticized communities without an iota of the challenge or color Stegner experienced in his youth. Will there ever be another writer like Stegner? Probably not, unless we somehow recapture the crucible of existence chronicled so magnificently in Wolf Willow.
