Wild Swans : Three Daughters of China - book cover picture

I started reading this book not knowing what to expect. Most of the books about China that I had read were historical and erudite, but they somehow left me more mystified than enlightened about China. Though I am from India and my culture is so different from China's, this one brought the country and its incredible women alive for me like nothing else could have. Weaving the stories of three generations of women who saw the world around them change cataclysmically, the book tells their stories--from the bound feet of the grandmother to the author's own escape to Britain--with a lucid, un-putdownable simplicity and power. I read the book, then my mother did, then my sister. It was a lesson in how much we had in common with these women who led lives so different from ours

Message of the Sphinx, The : A Quest for the Hidden Legacy of Mankind - book cover picture

The research and the thought processes go beyond the norm, but this book is one of the finest I've read in a long time. From the star maps to the chambers inside the pyramids, this book makes me wonder why these monoliths were designed. I think the most exciting material concerning the pyramids is going to come into being in the next year or two. Definitely a book to be read for those who have any interest in Egypt or early civilizations

Pigs in the Mud in the Middle of the Rud - book cover picture

I LOVE reading this book to my kids, and they love it, too. It's not too long, great illustrations, and I swear I know that grandma. The family is off to town for the day but the farm animals are in the road. One by one, the whole family tries to get them out of the way. Finally granny says, "Shoowee, up to me!" and gets the job done by calling out "Time for sup!" She gets covered in mud by the stampeding animals, but she's off to town anyway. Must be read enthusiastically.

The Ladies Auxiliary: A Novel - book cover picture

After I got used to the use of third person plural (we), I was a gonner for this story of southern Jewish Orthodox life which can be insular yet friendly, by Barnard grad, Tova Mirvis, 27, who was raised in a frum household in East Memphis. The nuances of community, like the woman who keeps unkosher shrimp in her home, or the ladies who share incorrect recipes add to the story. Batsheva...you go girl!

The Lonely Londoners (Longman Caribbean Writers Series) - book cover picture

"The Lonely Londoners" is my favorite book of all time! With this purchase, I would have bought a total of five(5) copies. The other four however, have gone to the "loaned-a-friend-and-never-got-it-b ack" graveyard in the sky.Selvon's account of West Indian immigramt life in 50's/60's London is riveting, poignant and tearfully funny. With realism and timeliness, he captures the unique brotherhood of survival that was the lifeblood of the network that sprung up in Brixton.Wait until you meet "Tall Boy" as he greets his family at the boat train at Paddington. "All of we come...!"

Storming Heaven - book cover picture

I bought Mills' first book Rising Pheonix during a business trip to Washington, and after reading it I could not wait for a return trip to buy Storming Heaven, which I have now read and eagerly await the third installment of Mark Beamon. Storming Heaven is one of the best and well written thrillers I have read. I thought it was a courageous subject to tackle and handled brilliently. Mills is going from strength to strength and I await his next title with child-like impatience.

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth - book cover picture

I am contemplating parenthood right now and I am looking for a birth experience that is very different than what most of my friends and family have gone through. Although I knew that alternatives were out there, I was distrustful because of the dominant medical model that we are so accustomed to in this country. Because of this book, my fears of alternative birthing are significantly reduced and I will definately seek out a freestanding birth center when the time comes for my husband and I. Henci Goer has done an excellent job of compiling medical research and presenting it in a clear, straitforward, and convincing fashion. She has done a tremendous service to childbearing women.

PHANTOM - book cover picture

This is probably one of the best books I have read. I couldn't put it down and looked forward to the next time I would pick it up. You are captured from beginning to end. I always like "Phantom of the Opera", the book and broadway production but this book starts from the beginning, Erik, as a child. You don't see Erik as a monster but a tortured soul, needy of love. I love the book, you won't regret the money you spend on it. I have read it twice already.

The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, Part 2) - book cover picture

This book is a great fantasy adventure full of action and suspense. In fact, I hardly ever read but with this book I read straight through! It took me through the make believe world known as Middle Earth, going into vivid details and descriptions of each area that the characters must go. From the vast forest of Entwash to the chaotic and dark kingdom of Mordor. Also, the flow of the book was steady and enjoyable because there was constant action and the book added effect by having multiple main characters.I recommend this book for everyone who wants to know what a great fantasy is like.

Jigsaw Jones #03 : Case Of The Secret Valentine, The (Jigsaw Jones) - book cover picture

This was one of the first Jigsaw Jones books I read to my children. It hooked us and I've now read the eight in the series so far.The books are short enough to keep the kids interested.James Preller has the nack of putting the right ingredients in the books to make my children laugh, things that happen in every 4 to 8 year olds life. We've practiced the different secret codes that Jigsaw and his best friend Mila come up with. Also we learned abit about Abraham Lincoln even though we are Canadians living in England. The Jigsaw Jones books are well travelled and luckily I can get them through Amazon in the U.K., So I guess this is really a review of the series and not necessarily one book. They are nice reading before bed and my children are always ready to listen to the Jigsaw Jones books.
